2020 iPhones May Have Full-Screen Touch ID, New iPhone SE Based on iPhone 8 Also Possible Next Year

As much as I’ve grown accustom to Face ID there really are times when I long for the return of Touch ID. Looks like this tech is only possible by removing 3D Touch which is a shame

I returned the XR and got the iPhone 8. Face ID is superior from a technical standpoint, but I had more reliability with Touch ID working the first time (on both an X and XR). I know that's not the experience with everyone. Also, I can't stand watching videos on the X-style phones...it just looks so weird.

Aside from the camera, it sounds like the 2019 iPhone will actually be a downgrade from my iPhone X. No 3D touch and no Qualcomm modem this year. Not to mention that 5G won't be included either.

It'll be one or the other but not both. FaceID or full screen fingerprint. But the whole point of in-screen fingerprint scanning is to get rid of the notch, but there's still too many front facing sensors to get rid of the notch even if the Dot projector gets tossed. The only way to get rid of the notch is to create a forehead bezel again - and we know that'll never happen

It's not a tech issue. Apple will not bring back TouchID because it is less secure.
Let me elaborate... Apple is seemingly doing away with 3D Touch layer from the screen this year, paving the way for screen tech to be added in its place for the mentioned all screen acoustic tech in 2020. It might not be called TouchID but I see it is a compliment to FaceID rather than a full replacement

These rumors have mixed up so much. Apple doesn't return to Touch ID after saying Face ID is thousands times more secure.
But Touch ID works great for slightly quicker Apple Pay, and works in any direction. Currently only iPad Pro Face ID works in all directions.
Also, we can no longer predict current Apple based on history that accurately.

Do these people really believe that Apple will walk back on Face ID? After going with it on the iPads, the company has given more than enough evidence that it is fully invested in it. Never mind the fact that once you use Face ID you realize how much superior it is to Touch ID.

Funny, I went back to Touch ID on my new iPad 2018 (I use FaceID on my iPhone X, and my prior iPhone was TouchID) and wow it is BETTER than face ID. Face ID constantly fails for me (and yes I have setup two profiles). If I am in the sun and my face is squinting it fails, it fails at times with my sunglasses, it fails all the time while laying down, it fails if I dont hold the iphone at about the same distance from my face. It fails so much that I keep my passcode as 4 digits because I am constantly entering it.

Whereas, when I went back to Touch ID, I was surprised how Touch ID in the iPad works all the time and is far more reliable in terms of working. It never fails whether I am in the sun, looking down, laying down, hair over my eyes, etc.

The big difference is to get Face ID to work I have to think about how I am holding the iPhone and my facial expression. Touch ID I don't think about being in the "sweet spot" for it to work.

Face ID is a great idea, but it is not as consistent in authenticating as Touch ID is for me...

No, it shouldn't, because that isn't why the product ever existed. No one cares what you would buy immediately.
Oh, nice dismissive insult. Shows a lot of character or do you have none? There is a market opportunity not being served with the current options and Apple should be open to it.

It's only superior in terms of security. It is far less reliable, sometimes slower, and doesn't work at all in some situations. Not a day goes by where I can't open multiple apps or autofill passwords. That sort of thing rarely, if ever, occurs with TouchID.

You should get your phone checked. I don’t have the issues you’re talking about. I doubt my phone has a bug that makes it work better than it’s supposed to.

My guess is that Apple may--instead of full-screen Touch ID--go with much smaller Face ID components. The result: a far smaller "notch" than now. That smaller "notch" now makes it possible for Apple to offer the 2020 iPhone models in the following screen sizes: 4.7" (in a phone not much bigger than the iPhone SE), 5.8" and new larger screen size phone around 6.7" (in my opinion).

2020 iPhones seems like the one to wait for if you care about keeping your phone for a while. 5G and potentially some design tweaks look all but guaranteed.

The 2019 refresh looks very similar to the 2018 refresh, which was one of the most “S” years in recent memory. Two very “S” years in a row is really disappointing.

That render is gorgeous; camera bump and wall paper.

I really hope they keep 3D Touch; it is such a premium feature that I’ve gotten used to.

That's interesting, I had the exact opposite experience with Touch ID and Face ID. With Touch ID, if you're holding a glass of water, a can of Coca-Cola, or if you just washed your hands, there you go, bam, it doesn't work. I have to wipe my fingers before I try it again. Only for it not to work again, as now the whole touch sensor is covered in moisture and very small droplets of water. So I need to take my iPad or iPhone and wipe it on my shirt or sleeve before it's functional again. That tires me out more often than the times Face ID didn't recognize me. Having said that, have you tried turning of Attention Sensor (not sure what is the real name) on the Face ID settings? This is the thing that requires that not only your face is detected, but your eyes must be opened before Face ID unlocks your device. I realise that turning this off might create a possibility that someone opens your phone while you're sleeping. However, if you're not as conscious about your device's privacy to think someone might do that, turning it off made Face ID work EXTREMELY reliably for me. Give it a try, it's worth it.

I don't think the notch will ever go away until they can figure out where to put all those sensors without reintroducing a forehead. My thought is regardless of whether they stick with FaceID or go back to TouchID, they still won't give up on Animoji's.
