As much as I’ve grown accustom to Face ID there really are times when I long for the return of Touch ID. Looks like this tech is only possible by removing 3D Touch which is a shame
/DiscussionIt's not a tech issue. Apple will not bring back TouchID because it is less secure.
Never mind the fact that once you use Face ID you realize how much superior it is to Touch ID.
These rumors have mixed up so much. Apple doesn't return to Touch ID after saying Face ID is thousands times more secure.
Let me elaborate... Apple is seemingly doing away with 3D Touch layer from the screen this year, paving the way for screen tech to be added in its place for the mentioned all screen acoustic tech in 2020. It might not be called TouchID but I see it is a compliment to FaceID rather than a full replacementIt's not a tech issue. Apple will not bring back TouchID because it is less secure.
But Touch ID works great for slightly quicker Apple Pay, and works in any direction. Currently only iPad Pro Face ID works in all directions. These rumors have mixed up so much. Apple doesn't return to Touch ID after saying Face ID is thousands times more secure.
No, it shouldn't, because that isn't why the product ever existed. No one cares what you would buy immediately.
Do these people really believe that Apple will walk back on Face ID? After going with it on the iPads, the company has given more than enough evidence that it is fully invested in it. Never mind the fact that once you use Face ID you realize how much superior it is to Touch ID.
Oh, nice dismissive insult. Shows a lot of character or do you have none? There is a market opportunity not being served with the current options and Apple should be open to it.No, it shouldn't, because that isn't why the product ever existed. No one cares what you would buy immediately.
Last year they said 3D Touch was going away. Why would I believe them this year?
I don’t care if it would be cheap or not. I want the smaller form factor. I am not looking for the cheapest device.Smaller does not mean it is cheaper to produce. The economics of manufacturing displays and sensors like used in FaceID mean it would cost the same or more than an iPhone X.
It's only superior in terms of security. It is far less reliable, sometimes slower, and doesn't work at all in some situations. Not a day goes by where I can't open multiple apps or autofill passwords. That sort of thing rarely, if ever, occurs with TouchID.
That's interesting, I had the exact opposite experience with Touch ID and Face ID. With Touch ID, if you're holding a glass of water, a can of Coca-Cola, or if you just washed your hands, there you go, bam, it doesn't work. I have to wipe my fingers before I try it again. Only for it not to work again, as now the whole touch sensor is covered in moisture and very small droplets of water. So I need to take my iPad or iPhone and wipe it on my shirt or sleeve before it's functional again. That tires me out more often than the times Face ID didn't recognize me. Having said that, have you tried turning of Attention Sensor (not sure what is the real name) on the Face ID settings? This is the thing that requires that not only your face is detected, but your eyes must be opened before Face ID unlocks your device. I realise that turning this off might create a possibility that someone opens your phone while you're sleeping. However, if you're not as conscious about your device's privacy to think someone might do that, turning it off made Face ID work EXTREMELY reliably for me. Give it a try, it's worth it.Funny, I went back to Touch ID on my iPad and wow it is BETTER than face ID. Face ID constantly fails for me (and yes I have setup two profiles). If I am in the sun and my face is squinting it fails, it fails at times with my sunglasses, it fails all the time while laying down, it fails if I dont hold the iphone at about the same distance from my face. It fails so much that I keep my passcode as 4 digits because I am constantly entering it.
Whereas, when I went back to Touch ID, I was surprised how Touch ID in the iPad works all the time and is far more reliable in terms of working. It never fails whether I am in the sun, looking down, laying down, hair over my eyes, etc.
The big difference is to get Face ID to work I have to think about how I am holding the iPhone and my facial expression. Touch ID I don't think about being in the "sweet spot" for it to work.
Face ID is a great idea, but it is not as consistent in authenticating as Touch ID is for me...
