I thinI the blooming problem is overblown. No pun intended. I’ve only noticed it at max brightness with a black screen and trying to look for it. At 80-85% brightness I don’t see it. people love nitpicking things. I had a surface pro 4 and 6 and they were 5 times worse.

Short answer: If you have an 11 inch 2020 iPad Pro, absolutely not. If you have a 12.9 inch 2020 iPad Pro, maybe. If you have a 12.9 inch 2018 iPad Pro, definitely.
What is the difference between the 2020 and 2018 models that warrants the 2018 to update?

If you’re at entry level, 2020 has 6GB RAM and 128GB storage while 2018 only has 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. Double the storage (+64GB) and double the RAM (+4GB) in addition to other improvements could be a decent incentive for some.

If my iPad was getting enough use that I could notice lag, and issue with multitasking... maybe time for an upgrade if I use the device that much? But really, I get this underlying feeling that iPadOS holds iPads back if processing power is no longer a limitation. Let's see what is brought to the table with the M1 in a week and a half, with iPadOS 15 revealed.
Completely agree. iPad hardware isn’t the problem. iPadOS is the weak link. It’s still just an overblown phone operating system with half baked multitasking and file management. It will be interesting to see what’s announced at WWDC!

basically the screen for hdr content. If you don’t watch movies or view hdr pics then its not much of an upgrade.

You're getting confused with the 2021 model.

The 2020 model just had camera and ram improvements.

I've had the M1 12.9 for nearly a week now and other than the noticeable difference in the screen, I'm not really experiencing any huge improvements compared to my 2020 12.9. This is of course based on my work flow and how i use it. The iPad 12.9 has been my only device that does everything I need and therefore, a good enough reason to upgrade. Otherwise, one might be wise to wait until WWDC to see what iPadOS 15 gets.

While the 2020 12.9 has been my only work horse in past year, I did also get the M1 MBA and M1 iPad Pro 11 at the same time I got the M1 12.9. TBH, I'm quite liking the combo and it's been nearly 2 years since I've touched MacOS. I'm really tempted to return the M1 12.9 and sell my 2020 12.9.

… you’re aware iPadOS can only access 5GB of that 8GB of memory, so it’s not that “huge” of an upgrade, yeah?
5GB is already a 25% increase. (Wouldn't you be at least a little pleased if your car got 25% increase in range, 25% reduction in fuel usage, 25% more passengers, or whatever metric you care to apply.)

And, as I read it, that is for a single app. Whereas on a 4GB machine, you have first to subtract the overhead of IPadOS. 1GB might not be enough allowance for that, but assuming it were, it would leave an absolute maximum for a single app of 3GB. On that basis, 5GB represents at least a 66% increase in the potential for single app usage.

That's before IPadOS 15. That's before considering the memory needs of, perhaps, two foreground apps working simultaneously.

both of them are power machines. very good explaining at the video. but peoples will upgrade with coming apps that support that power. that's why ipp will see a boost in the next generation. I personally have no need for that size - and for a toy that's outdates in 5 years it is to expensive ;-)

iPad mini pro plus finally usability for phone calls - them I am in.

RAM, the lidar thing and iirc, one more GPU core. I guess the experience is virtually the same.

If I had a 2018 iPP I’ll wait until WWDC before upgrading. I own a 2020 11” iPP and I won’t even think about upgrading as of today.

I upgraded my 2017 iPP 10.5 to a 2021 iPP 11. Has it changed my electronic life? Not much. But it is faster, and the Logitech Combo Touch keyboard is pretty fly. (It would be great if Logitech would sell a non-keyboard cover that could be substituted for the heavier keyboard when on the go.)
That’s handy to know as I‘d be upgrading from where you were ipad wise if I had the inclination to do so .

I upgraded from a 2018 iPad Pro 11" to the new 2021 M1 iPad Pro 11". I couldn't be happier!

Those were my main reasons:
  • Battery life: I have been using my 2018 iPad daily for almost 3 years and you could feel the battery was worn out. I needed a new battery and wow, can I feel the difference on the new one! It holds forever!
  • Center stage: one of my main uses of my iPad are FaceTime calls. And this really increases usability by a lot!
  • Screen: it's supposed to be the same screen (and it probably is), but it's still way better. I think using it daily for so many hours over the years somehow did wear it out
  • 5G: yes, I'm lucky enough to live in a country with really good 5G coverage and I'm on the road all the time. Everything feels much snappier and reliable (even when there's only 4G coverage), probably the new modem chip makes a big difference
So, taken individually, all minor reasons, but I'm extremely happy about this upgrade. It was worth every cent.

As was stated in the video, a lot hinges on what is announced in the WWDC 2021. I see very little Pro in the Pro models, other than better hardware. The M1 iPad Pro seems better equipped for Pro work, but the lackluster iPadOS still is not capable of delivering a Pro experience except for entertainment purposes. Personally I wouldn't pay twice as much for a tricked out iPad Pro 12.9" as for a very nice 4K HDR TV if mostly all that I would do is watch videos and play games on it. The 4K HDR TV will likely still be going strong in 10 years, the iPad Pro 12.9" will be long dead by that time. If you want to watch top of the line video, buy the TV. If you want a professional iPad to create professional level video, do professional kinds of work on, and basically replace your MacBook Pro, then you might want to wait a while because no matter how good the M1 iPad Pro is in the hardware category, it still runs a lackluster and glitchy OS that is simply not up to the task of sustained professional level work.

I actually love the Center Stage feature. I also love how quick Zoom was able to implement the feature (thank you Apple for making the API available).

Keeping my 2018 Pro 11", it's one of the most futureproof products Apple have ever made. Maybe iPadOS 15 will put it through its paces
Same. They missed me this year by not including the better screen tech in the 11”, but maybe we’ll get full on OLEDs next year.

If you buy an iPad Pro, got to buy the pencil to even if you just consume content; just make the iPad more enjoyable!

Even seeing the iPad Pro is person at the Apple Store may not be as accurate as test as purchasing and making use of the 14 day return window.
I returned 3 different Apple device within a month the back in 2015 and was banned from the 14 day return policy for a year! LOL!
