A 12-team playoff means an additional round of four more games to be played.

More games -- more money.

A lot of cooks involved in college football, and the easiest way to get them all on the same page and agree to something is to dangle that carrot.

The Rose Bowl had to be threatened with losing its place in the next contract before it agreed to drops its demands, and allow the expanded playoff to begin a couple years sooner than originally envisioned.

Go to 8 teams and the #9 and #10 teams will complain. Go to 12 teams and the #13 and #14 teams will complain. It'll never end. At least with a 4 team playoff, the top 4 usually are undefeated or have 1 loss. Go to 12, then you're looking at teams with 2 or even 3 losses - which puts things into more of a debate.

I'm happy to see more playoff teams (because it means more games), but I don't think it solves the problem.

What I WOULD LOVE to see is all teams scheduling similarly skilled/caliber schools and forget the conference. No more of Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, LSU, Clemson, etc., playing five "Jerkwater University" teams during the regular season.

…maybe something similar to the European soccer (football) system, which I really don't understand) but, teams would drop out of the top tier based on win-loss record. A top tier team would not be allowed to play a second tier team the following year, or else it would be an exhibition game that would not count on the top tier team's record, unless they lose. It would be complicated.

Relegation is an interesting idea, but it would upset the current model whereby cream puff opponents are scheduled so the big teams can pad their records, and the little teams can get a.payday that might make up the bulk of their athletic program's budget, in exchange for a public drubbing.

That said, what I would like to see is an effort to standardize the number of such games allowed (and no late season gimmes), or number of games in general, to be considered for the CFP, to at least promote some sort of a consistent basis that applies to everyone.

A tall ask, yes…

Yeah, so sad. I was thinking the outcome wasn't good when reports were saying he remained in critical condition.

I mean he was a walking stress ball so him having a heart condition was not unexpected. Still sad.
To be honest, when I heard he was admitted and the family asked for privacy, all I could think about it, is that it was a heart attack - because as you said, he was a walking stress ball

I stay College Football should go to Bowls/Division winners to tournament! It work in College Basketball, hock, basballl and other sports too! I know the last four teams go to College Division 1 hockey's Frozen Four at different cities all over that States according to natural places! They even have a outdoor games too through the years!

MSU is going to play in their bowl game because the players felt Leach would have wanted them to.

Good for them and good for the school letting them decide.

It hadn't occurred to me that MSU might drop out of the bowl. If this tragic loss had come closer to the game, then maybe it would be different. There's time to grieve and start putting their lives back together before they have to play, and being together as a team is where they'd want to be anyway. They have my condolences.

That said, I'll be rooting against them. They will be playing my Alma Mater! GO ILLINI

Speaking of Illinois, there have been rumblings for a few years now (as I learned recently) to adopt a new mascot to replace the long-retired Chief Illiniwek. (Of course, we considered him a symbol, not a mascot, but the team has had nothing like a mascot since about 2007 or so - I forget when that happened.) The candidate is the Belted Kingfisher, a bird that has some orange and lots of blue feathers. I say go all in. The bird is native to Illinois, and a wide swath of the Midwest and Plains. As a Cubs fan also, it's always bugged me that the Illinois State Bird is a cardinal. So, change that, and change the name of the teams at Illinois to the Kingfishers. I think someday all the Native American team names will be retired anyway. And several other states have the cardinal as the state bird, but I bet none have the Belted Kingfisher. [Yeah, lower case c on purpose…]

Yeah, I was wondering if they were going to play. I think overall, why tragic, its kind of a nice way to finish what he started. In many ways better then moping around feeling sad over the loss.

Bowl season is now upon us. I didn't get to see yesterday's bowl game, being that it was on in the day time, but I'm happy to have some college games back on. There's one or two today, and as we inch closer to new years the frequency will definitely increase.

I actually watched the Division II playoffs - the semifinals were on espn last night and it was a fun game to watch..
Incarnate Word vs. N Dakota St I don't know either school, but at one point N Dakota St was looking to blow out Incarnate Word, but IW came back and made a really good game of it.

That was actually the FCS. What used to be 1-AA.

And yes, it was an entertaining game. But he should have kicked the FG and hoped the D could hold.

That's to be expected, these pre-Christmas bowl games are all have a lower class of teams.

I didn't see it but the Mia (Ohio) and UAB game looked like it could have been a fun game but I did watch the SMU vs. BYU and that was a really good game. I'm surprised by total lack of offense for Cincinnati but then they really did seem to struggle during the season

Wow, that's cold - especially because you're in the south. Its a balmy 33 degrees here in Boston. I'm just heading out for a run and truth be told, not looking forward to it, LOL

Morning to you too, and hopefully you can enjoy the quiet sunday morning - given how cold it is

I wish they would go away...
They seem to be getting worse, back a few years ago, the pre-new years bowl games were the earliest bowl games now I was surprised to see games starting this past friday.

Looks like a change will be made in the bill and will allow Army's Andre Carter II to enter the draft.

If the government wants to prevent those attending service academies from playing pros sports, fine. But don't change the rules in the middle of the game.

My own view is that if you got game, and expect a chance to play pro sports, don't go to a service academy. That's for people who truly want to serve, not do it as a side gig. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

LOL, can you imagine if Tom Brady went to a service academy, with deferred service? And, 25 years later, he is a 45 year old ensign or Lt jg.

One bowl game tomorrow, and then it kicks into over drive with 4 Tuesday. I'll be having my laptop on my desk with the games going while I "work" during the day :)
