Still loving my iPhone SE 2020 but welcome the spec bump. As others have noted, this phone needs a bigger battery though.

1,821 mAh is simply not big enough. That's the same as the iPhone 8.

iPhone 7 actually had 1,960 mAh. If they could simply throw the same battery from the iPhone 7 in there, with the A15 Chip, that might help immensely.

I simply am still too in love with Touch ID to let go. My 2021 iMac has reenforced this for me. Touch ID rules.
Not possible unless they remove wireless charging

SE Plus would be great, but likely will never happen. The one proposed for 2024 sounds solid, but I will probably upgrade my XR before then. This 2022 version sounds pretty underwhelming. Definitely a budget phone with a few nice bells and whistles, but nothing exciting. Unless Apple proves the rumors wrong. I love it when that happens for the better.

Ah boo.
What’s wrong in using the current iPhone 8 design is the battery. The iPhone SE has less than 2000mAh battery. That’s just not going to work for modern smartphone use, let alone 5G. No other phones in the world that still have that tiny battery. This is embarrassing. If this were true, then the component shortages must be really bad.

well they managed to squeeze in larger batteries in the same design phones in the last couple years. So maybe they’ll squeeze in a slightly bigger one into the SE

The SE is about cost and using existing supply chains. Apple could have put in a thicker battery in SE 2020 since it doesn't have the iPhone 8's 3D Touch display layer. But they chose to retain the same battery instead.

Yep. I'm still using an iPhone 7 and I love it. I tried a 13 mini, but I just didn't like it as much as my 7. I know that sounds crazy. I tried a 13 and it felt like a giant blocky brick. I just prefer having the home button, touch id, the screen aspect ratio, the size, the rounded edges, the lcd instead of oled. I am really hoping they just improve the battery life on the SE3, because then it will be perfect.

This is not about money. I could buy a 13 Pro Max if I wanted to, but I prefer my 7. IMO, every other phone in Apple's line up feels worse to me than the 6/7/8/SE2020 form factor.
Same here, recently switched from my Iphone X to the SE 2020 and couldn’t be happier. Price was not the reason but all the things you mentioned.

Yup, but they still add a little more features each year. So I wouldn’t rule it out, especially if they are adding 5g, which consumes more battery. I would surprised if they didn’t try to bump it up a bit.

It is not about the form factor, but about battery life. Bigger phones are big because they have bigger batteries and provide much better battery life. Now, one can make the argument that they don't need as much battery life, but let me ask you this. Do you want to fill up your car everyday, or have 3/4th gas left over?

I frankly don't think the SE line will remain successful. I think people might switch to Samsung for lower priced smart phones with better battery life.

I don’t believe this rumor. It would fit the pattern more if the 3rd SE uses XR design. I guess we’ll see.

I wonder who would buy a device with bezels in 2022 when there are plenty of all display android options out there. Not all people care about 5G or having the latest chip, but they do care about displays.
Plenty of us. Bezels aren't a big deal as long as the phone is holdable in one hand and the screen is reachable in one hand. The iphone 6/7/8 size works just fine for that. For those of us who like smaller phones edge to edge screens don't help if they make the phone's form factor too big to be usable by one hand.

sounds like a pointless upgrade for those of us who have the latest SE. ...unless the camera or battery life are much better

I have always rejected the idea of an XR/11 sized iPhone, because it is not confortable for one handed usage (and on the store, every time I've tried an XR/11, I've dropped onto the table). HOWEVER, if they manage to make the XR/11 design smaller, even a bit, I might be interested. A 5.8" design like the iPhone X could be a good choice.

The ideal form factor for me is the iPhone 13 mini, and I've been able to test one this holidays, a truly amazing device, but sadly enough, I will return it because using it outside my home is very uncomfortable, having to type the passcode again and again due to Face ID not working with face masks. It is a pity that the only solution Apple offers to you is to pair it with an Apple Watch, a device I am not interested into, to be able to use the device properly on a pandemic situation. Face ID is not recognising me with a mask, and that's a major flaw that I cannot afford on a device that would be intended to last many years (and yes, masks are here to stay, the waves of SARS-CoV-2 haven't stopped yet and there's no point in the current horizon to when this will end). So I am staying with Touch ID.

Apple hasn't released the iPhone 13 mini with Touch ID, and next year's iPhone 14 will be big phones, regardless of them having under display Touch ID or not, I'm not gonna buy a smartphone I cannot handle with one hand (this is, bigger than 5.8"). Maybe the 2024 iPhone SE will feature the iPhone X/XS/11Pro body, but until then, this year I'm gonna return the 13 mini and get an 2022 iPhone SE, with an outdated design but hopefully a bigger battery and slightly better cameras.
I agree with you that the iPhone 13 Mini is a great form factor. The secret to opening it with a face mask on is to also have an Apple Watch.

Don’t know if the rumors of the new SE being like the Xr or 11 are true, but I hope they’re not. Those are chunky, bulky phones which for me go against one of the best parts of the SE line this far.

I like the small phones and hope they stay. My 13 Mini doesn’t even feel small to me, it feels right-sized.

Absolutely, is the iPhone 6 design after all (2014) which was starting to look dated then in 2014, and now by this article Apple expects to be selling this phone well into 2024 for $400 plus tax, which is insane. Besides this phone people will be looking at Xiaomi et al Android's with all-screen designs that look 2022, not 2014.

I get the point here is to have an entry point but current iPhone and that it wasn't gonna sport the 12 mini design, but, despite the up-to-date internals, home button, whatever, the design will be a turn-off for sure and I'd expect Apple to sell less and less of it.
Why can’t I have what I want, not what you want and likely wouldn’t be buying?

I agree about battery life. But I don't think Apple cares too much if the SE is successful or not. It's just a way to have a $400 iPhone in their lineup. In the end, Apple is about upselling, and they want people to spend $1000, not $400.

In some countries like mine, the SE is like $500. Definitely not competitive at all when at a similar price, you can get the Galaxy S20 FE. But Apple doesn't care.

Some people on here worry about the design of their iPhone far more then I do. If the SE has the specs I want and the price point I will pay, I couldn't care less if its design language is a few years old. Just the same as I couldn't care less if you whip out the latest iPhone in the cafe at the table next to me. I won't even look at it.

I used to own the second generation iPhone SE and the battery rarely lasted for more than 7 hours. I tried tweaking stuff, but it really didn't make much difference.
Mine lasts all day. Not sure what you were doing with yours.

I'm happy with the SE. If they stick to the same design, I'll still buy it.

Exactly, it feels so right in hand… I still don’t understand why Apple is finishing this form factor. Well, actually I do know, it’s because poor sales… I still don’t understand, to this day, why people don’t buy this phone and they massively chose 6.1 and, specially, phones with almost 7 inches. It is insane but hey, people is free to chose.

Bigger phones have batteries with more capacity.

It depends on your smartphone usage. But let's be real, the SE only has 1800mAh. That's smaller than even the iPhone 12 mini, and people complained about the battery life of the mini.

The SE would be fine for those who are not using the phone constantly, is only using the phone for calls, and the phone is idle most of the time. But for actual regular smartphone usage, it will be insufficient. Simple constant chatting will drain the phone quickly. Putting a faster SoC and 5G won't help that.
