This idea of bringing no hopers from the US into Formula racing, a kid that has only ever done sunny day, left turn only events, bring the "best" of indycar into F2.. Not sure that is a great idea, there is a reason we have a super licence, and a pathway from the 1st time you start in karts at 5 yrs old.. It takes a decade to build up to being medically competent to compete, by medically competent, I mean muscles, stamina, let alone the mental aspects..

To bring Herta in now, he is way too old, not fit enough, not skilled enough, to handle wet weather or damp conditions, when any sort of wet sends Indycar into cancel mode.. How is he going to handle a standard static start? VSC? Blue flags.. Lapping the safety car?

The FIA is truly in crisis, and this farce is not making things any better.. If anything, Herta into F2 proves the future is bright for the amalgamation of F1 into Indycar.. This is just the start of a brand new era of a New IndyCar..

You were saying…something? Or nothing. As usual.

Lewis honours Niki Lauda in Monza. Great gesture by him 🥰

The question.. Should F1 be importing talent from the US? What does this mean for European based drivers? Is this the death of F2?

Alpha Tauri wanted Herta to drive for them in 2023, but he did not have the necessary points to secure a Super License and the FIA refused to waive the points requirement.

Hence why Herta is joining Cadillac as a reserve driver to get FP1 time (with 34 points at the start of 2026, he needs six stints to qualify for an SL) and why he is going into F2 to become more familiar with European tracks that he could race on if he is promoted to F1.

And there is no guarantee he will get promoted, since he is going to have to show he has the talent to compete over the next two years (as Bottas and Perez are on two year contracts).

After all there are almost zero F2 drivers in F1 in 2026? Yet the FIA is happy to use imports from the US?

What are you on about? Colapinto, Bearman, Antonelli, Hadjar and Bortoleto were all in F2 last year and all but Antonelli and Colapinto are confirmed for 2026. Antonelli getting a contract for 2026 is a given and if Colapinto is not in F1 next year, it is likely Aron or Lindblad will be and Lindblad is in F2 this year and Aron was last year.

Great video, interesting, a lot of issues with grip, but at least they do practice.. Not sure about actual racing as we do in F1..

IndyCar races in the rain on street circuits and road courses.

McLaren has identified a failed engine oil line as the cause of Norris' DNF at Zandvoort. This is a McLaren-supplied part. AMG Powertrains is examining the unit to see if it can be returned to Norris' pool for later this season.

wow they do seem to have a lot less grip in the wet than an F1 car...

IndyCar only has one "wet" spec tire, and it's more like an intermediate than full wet.

But in general, the cars have less downforce, and less grip. And while not as complicated, they need to be "driven," as opposed to "piloted."

It's better told by someone who has raced both, not just a keyboard.

We shall see how the Herta experiment works out, but give them both (including TWG) credit for making an attempt.

Herta is genuinely quick, and came up with Pato O'Ward as two young, promising talents. But neither are complete drivers. Herta has a record of unforced errors, compounded by team errors at other times, so his CV doesn't contain any marquee accomplishments. O'Ward is also quick, and has matured in attitude, settling into the team leader role at McLaren, but while the team has improved, it isn't quite there either. If Penske didn't have a turbulent, down season, McLaren probably would have finished behind them in third.

The degree of specialization, and practical circumstances today make it difficult for a driver to contest multiple series, and disciplines like in the past. Many aren't even willing to entertain the thought.

I admire most those who are ready, willing, and able to jump into any car, race it, and win. A true racer.

The closest to that today are sports car drivers, who can be found driving prototypes, GT cars, as well as FE. Wherever the factory sends them, or rides they can pick up, as part the career of being a working sports car driver.
