Enjoyed the race. Especially the start. Really interesting game of car and mouse between George and both Ferrari’s at times before the VSC.

If Ferrari had split the strategy maybe Mercedes don’t get the 1-2. But hard to say.
Max started at the back and made his way all the way up to 6th. Very interesting to see where he’d have been with a 2nd or 3rd row start.

Good showing from this season’s only rookie. He drove a very mature race and went wheel to wheel with those around him.

Reliability was better than expected I think.

The field will close up of course, but Mercedes have won the off season. Now it’s a development race.
Anyone else surprised that the AMs actually raced...?

Alonso was even in the points for a wee bit. Or did I imagine that?

Just finished watching. Prior to ATV, I only had the Sky crew from when ESPN took over a number of years ago, so I watched the F1TV crew for the race to see what they’re like. Alex Jacques and DC did a good job, though they tended to ignore the FIA Stewards’ notices that appeared on screen. Colapinto got a stop and go early on and they didn’t mention it until about 10 laps were left in the race. Jacques is definitely much calmer calling the first lap than Crofty on Sky. I watched the pre-race coverage from both Sky and F1TV and thought Sky’s was better. Anthony Davidson’s analysis of Oscar’s incident was much more informative than Alex Brundle’s. One thing I don’t like about Sky’s coverage is they do seem to be unabashedly part of the Lewis Hamilton fan club. That gets annoying.

Once again, Ferrari’s strategy was questionable, though, as LeClerc said, it might not have made a difference in the final results. The first number of laps were very interesting with multiple passes for the lead on track, maybe more than in all of last year. Hope that continues going forward!

I’m watching the F1TV post race coverage now to see how I like it. First comment, which others have mentioned, is c’mon JPM, show some respect and don’t look like you got dressed from a Goodwill drop off box. At least find clothes that fit! (here’s where a lot of you are thinking “ok Boomer!”).

I am not fully versed on Formula 1, with all the rules, and even more so the new "battery" usage. But, I was happy to see a lot of overtaking and re-overtaking happening in the first race of the season.

PS: I was surprised that Ferrari did not call one of the drivers in, for a tire change during the early safety car...

Commentary on Apple TV: I seriously hope it improves over the coming races. It wasn't awful, but, wasn't brilliant either. I also felt the start could have been more hyped, I felt they presented the commentary for it a little flat.

Then again, maybe I am simply used to Sky Sports and ESPN commentary.

PS: Brundle's son sounds just like him!

Congratulations to George on the win. The Mercedes is formidable. Ferrari still doing Ferrari strategy. Impressive starts though. Will they be able to keep that advantage during races? Should have come in on the first VSC. Impressive recovery drive from Max. DOD. Hadjar looks like a hydraulic failure. Nice drive from Lando holding off Max. Will be interesting to watch Max in a race starting up front.

I’m not sure yet if the racing is that good. Sort of reminds me of peloton racing. Listening to the speed die on the straight is still like a root canal.

On to China. Loving my F1TV feed on ATV. May I never be abused by Sky again.

What did you think of the Apple F1 commentary, versus Sky Sport commentary and grid walk?

The only thing I couldn’t fine was Ted Kravitz’ post-race Notebook show. After watching both post-race shows, I think I like Sky’s better.
I watched the race again, this time with the Sky Sports commentary. The race was certainly more intense, than with the ATV commentary...

Martin is a much better dresser.

I was surprised they not only took the lights, but then put in over a dozen laps and even came back out of the garage to run additional laps.

As @Glideslope noted, Apple is not providing their own commentary team. They are carrying the global F1TV feed and those are the F1TV commentary team that has been in place for years (with the exceptions of Presenter Betty Glover and Expert Pundit Juan Pablo Montoya, whom are new for this year).

Peter Windsor did not hold back in his Australia Race Review, spending the first half of his video absolutely savaging the new regulations.

One thing he did note that I found fascinating - and, admittedly, somewhat concerning - is just how quickly the cars accelerate off the line if you hook them up correctly and how poorly they do if you do not.

At the same point on the track (my guess is ~200m past the Start/Finish line) Lewis was doing 162km/h whereas just ahead of him, Leclerc had been doing 108. And while his race was a disaster, Sainz's start was blistering at 158km/h (second-fastest after Lewis). Meanwhile, Liam Lawson was doing only 43 due to almost stalling and Colapinto was doing three times that when he reached the same point, truly showing how good his reflexes were at avoiding plowing into Liam. Most of the fastest cars were in 3rd, while the slowest were still in 1st.

Peter was spot on as usual as far as I’m concerned. Chaos.

Not any different than stuff the old crew said.

The big difference was that this new crew TOTALLY MISSED MARIO ANDRETTI AND EDDIE IRVINE as they did their grid walk. Say what we will about Bartin Mrundle but he wouldn't have done that.

I've seen a few videos of him driving various race cars, he does sound so much like his dad.

He seems to really love driving the classic race cars (Lister Storm, etc). Seems to be down to earth.

I don't know how any commentators worth their contract could miss Mario Andretti, he is an absolute legend of motor racing.

This could end up in some crashes I suspect. Maybe that's what fans want though. I've read that in lots of F1 forum discussions over the years with fans moaning that F1 is too boring, too safe, not enough crashes, etc.

But I suspect if you gave them skinny-tyres cigar on four wheels like the old days with a 3.0L 450hp NA 8 cylinder they'd still complain.

Exactly, they missed Eddie Irvine as well.

Alonso seemed to come in around 25 laps, then as you noted, went out again a little while later.
I guess they were tweaking things, to see if they could improve the vibrations, but as he pulled out again, I guess not. Track time is also important, so that data accumulated must help.
I also think they were hoping to be on track when the chequered flag came, to have 2 cars ‘finish’.
With Stroll finishing, -15 laps, and his previous statement that he could only do 15 laps, then they have managed to find some solutions.

Sidenote: Sad that it’s Honda as their engine supplier, and not an OEM Aston Martin engine.

Just watched the race. This gen is going to be utterly awful!! The entire field was spread out by tens of seconds! The bottom of the field over a minute behind?

Closer racing? For who? Someone wearing binoculars whilst driving?

A series won by the those on the front row.

How the hell did you get the F1 on Apple TV?

I quite enjoyed the season opener and more than I thought I would. Russell is feisty and showing the commitment I hoped he would. Those Ferrari's are quick off the mark too! Charles gave a good battle and isn't it great to see Lewis Hamilton back?!! We are definitely going to see Ferrari wins this year for sure, but Mercedes have done the best job it seems. Ferrari just need to let their drivers decide when to pit as the strategy department cost them dearly yesterday. Antonelli had a decent race and I have no doubt he'll get his first win this season.

Aston Martin looked fast briefly.
