I know the real reason it is on the calendar is that it has traditionally been where all the teams entertain their major corporate sponsors and renew existing deals as well as sign new ones, but now that we have tracks like Jeddah, Abu Dahbi, Miami and Las Vegas on the calendar, I wonder if a fair bit of that "action" now takes place at those events, reducing the importance of Monaco? Perhaps that is why F1 was willing to move it to the new date to better accommodate Montreal?
Jeddah. AD, SA, but they are now bankrupt, spent all their Dirhams on floggers, a couple of floggers on a fake tour.. Paid them billions and now the bank account is in overdraft.. nothing left to sell but the yacht and time on the F1 calendar..
Which is why I think Monaco might never not be on the calendar, big sports ie tennis, F1, soccer etc, they operate the year like timeshare, you as an owner of an event, say French Open, you have 15 days end of May, into June, that you own, if someone wants to run a tournament, it has to buy that time from the French Open...
A couple decades ago, we had the South African Open, and the federation ran into financial issues, and as a result had to sell their date in the WTA/ATP schedule...F1 is the same..
Lewis and co, want an South African GP, but where on the schedule, who is selling their slot? When does it make sense to host, with regards freight, weather, other events..
Which makes me wonder, why was Monaco moved? At first I was pissed off that Monaco was moved, and Montreal GP in it's place, but I thought about this for a while, and I think it was so that both Indy and F1 benefit, you as a massive sponsor, have to choose between Indy500 and Monaco, arguably the crown jewels of each season.. You have to choose where to send your clients, Indy or Monaco...
But move the F1 2 weeks later, drop in a run down semi pro track as a compromise, now the big spenders, have a weekend in Indy, then a weekend in Monaco.. And it is after pay day!!!!
I am sure that Monaco got a bit of a bonus for the move.. No free lunch..
The point is, I doubt the oil-barons really care, they are on a hiding to nothing, looking at the cupboard and wondering if the tinned beans are still safe...
Liv took them for a massive ride.. But I am sure they are going to be ok..
