  • Current Top 50 = members with the 50 currently highest post counts.
  • Cur Posts = current count of posts by this member (see Note below).
  • 6-Mo Posts = count of posts made in this measurement period, or "---" if none.
  • Cur Rate = average # posts per day by this member over the measurement period.
  • Delta Rate = change in average daily post rate from the prior semi-annual period to the latest period.
  • Prev Rank = previous rank, as of 6 months ago; a number above 50 for those who are new to the Top 50.
  • Delta Rank = change in rank, i.e., # of slots +higher or -lower in rank since prior semi-annual stats.
  • 6-Mo Likes = count of likes received in this measurement period.
  • Likes/Post = ratio of Likes per Post in this measurement period, or "---" if data unavailable.
  • Avg of one post every = average time between member's posts, in days, hours, and minutes, based on a 24-hour day.
Note: Posts in any of the following forums are not counted in any post counts or post rates.

Remarks
  1. @Apple fanboy moved past @Doctor Q, an event predicted in July. He also moved past @Applejuiced, which was NOT predicted in July.
  2. Members @cmaier and @The Game 161 had the greatest increases in rank within the Top 50. @cmaier debuted in the Top 50 in July, and continues his rise.
  3. Member @Apple_Robert (formerly BasicGreatGuy) flew into the Top 50 from nowhere (well, 83rd), debuting at rank 30. @gnasher729 barely squeaked into the Top 50, just edging past @kdarling.
  4. In addition to debuting into the Top 50, Apple_Robert also achieved the highest post rate of any member, and is the only one posting at an average rate faster than once per hour.
  5. Member @C DM at rank 3 had a drastic increase in post rate (Delta Rate). Not quite as much as Apple_Robert, but still double-digits.
  6. @kdarling and @OllyW depart the Top 50. We bid them au revoir.

Remarks
  1. In July 2020, Table 3 showed only one member, @cmaier, with more posts in 6-mos than @Scepticalscribe. This time, there are three such posters, and @cmaier has fallen to 7th place in prolificacy. Sic transit gloria mundi.
  2. @The-Real-Deal82 is the most prolific poster outside the Top 50. He's ranked 121 in overall post count, so unless he makes a leap like Apple_Robert, it will may be a while before he breaks into the Top 50.

The next user projected to surpass mad jew is Weaselboy, and that isn't expected until fairly late in 2021. The Top 50 newcomer Apple_Robert is projected to be close behind, but that can only happen if he keeps up his astonishing post rate.

The actual ranks of the first 11 match their January projections, except the perennial overachiever @Apple fanboy overtook not only Doctor Q, but Applejuiced.

Some actual post counts are below the projections, as several users posted at a reduced rate. @C DM is a notable exception, with an increase in average post rate to almost 15 posts per day. His previous average was about 1.5 posts/day, so that's about 10 times more posts/day.

The actual ranks in the range 18-30 are close to their projections, except that @Rogifan advanced farther than predicted, and @Apple_Robert arrived from the hinterlands.

Outside the Top 50, several posters advanced more than predicted. In some cases, there was only a minor change to ther post rates. In others, the rate increased significantly.

  • Current Top NN = members with the NN currently highest post counts.

  • Cur Rate = average # posts per day by this member over the measurement period.
  • Delta Rate = change in average daily post rate from the prior semi-annual period to the latest period.

  • Delta Rank = change in rank, i.e., # of slots +higher or -lower in rank since prior semi-annual stats.

Info About All Graphs

The horizontal X axes represent dates, and are labeled as YYYY-MM-DD.

The vertical Y axes are automatically determined, and are specific to a graph. The upper and lower limits of each graph are based on the range of values in the graphed data. This means that the steepness of line slopes can't be compared between different graphs.

Colors are also automatically assigned, from a rotating pool of 12 colors. This can make color-to-name conversion ambiguous when more than 12 members are graphed. Use each graph's legend or key on the right to resolve any duplicate colors. The legend is arranged in the same order as the right-most points of each graph.

A dashed line is automatically assigned to inactive users (no posts in the latest measurement period), and a solid line to active users (at least 1 post in latest period). To reduce the clutter, the only inactive user typically shown is @mad jew.



Graphs of Top 50 Post-Counts Over Time

These two graphs show the progression of semi-annual post counts for the Top 50 posters, starting from 2016 July 3rd (2016-07-03). Users who made no posts in the last 6 months are omitted, except for the historical benchmark represented by @mad jew.

Member @Blue Velvet appears in both graphs, with different colors. This overlap is intentional.

Top 50 Posters: In Two Groups

A horizontal graph line (or nearly so) is a member with a low post rate.

A steeply rising slope indicates a high post rate. If the slopes of the segments steepens over time, that user is increasing their post rate. If the slopes flatten, the post rate is falling off.

In the upper graphs we can see a big change in @C DM's slope, which indicates a change in post rate. In the lower graphs, @Apple_Robert starts as the lowest graphed line, then jumps up to slightly above @bartelby.


Cluttered Graphs

The first graph below shows all the members from the two graphs above in a single graph. It's cluttered and difficult to read. We can still distinguish marked changes in line slope for C DM and Apple_Robert.

The second graph, which adds the remaining inactive members in the Top 50, is even more cluttered.

The main reason for showing these is to compare slopes (post-count growth rates). This gives an idea of how much the most prolific posters actually post.

Graphs of Weekly Post-Count Growth

The following graphs show weekly post-count growth for the most prolific 36 users, divided into 3 groups of 12 each. There is no overlap between groups.

Each line represents one user's weekly post-count growth, relative to their post count at the start of the measurement period 6 months ago. In effect, each member gets their own "starting count", and the graph shows how their individual post count grows from week to week.

If a member makes a lot of posts for a week, then their line will slope up more steeply. If they make no posts for a week, then their line will be flat. In rare cases, a line may drop a little, which means that some posts were deleted, or a thread was moved to an uncounted forum.

Since the members of each group have different ranges, you can't compare slopes between graphs. A steep line in one graph might not represent the same post rate in another graph. To get a sense of overall weekly growth, we need a single graph with all the Prolific Posters, which is shown after the groups of 12.

Notice the Y axis numbers in Group 1 vs. Group 2. Due to the prodigious post rates of the top few members, Group 1's top Y is several times higher than that of Group 2.

In Groups 2 & 3 we see some posters with wavering lines, which means several weeks with fewer posts(flat), and several weeks with many more (steep) . In some cases, you can see when they increased posting around events like product announcements.

In this graph we can compare slopes, which gives a better sense of how prolific the top posters are, compared to almost everyone else.

This graph is similar to the one directly above, but it omits the Top 5 most prolific posters. Because the vertical max depends on the range of values graphed, it shows more detail in the lower range. Compare the upper graph's Y-max to the lower graph's.

Welcome to the January 2021 version of "Fun With Graphs". We'll see some graphs of things other than the usual semi-annual and weekly posts.


Top 50 Changes: Details

Race Into the Top 10

This graph shows @Apple fanboy advancing past Doctor Q in August, then past Applejuiced in December. This was the only change in rank in the Top 10.

@Doctor Q shows an unexpected drop in post count around mid-December. I only noticed this when I made the graphs, so I haven't had time to look into a possible cause. His post counts for the two dates are:
2020-12-13 38330 posts​
2020-12-20 38269 posts​
That's a difference of 61 posts. They probably slipped behind the sofa cushions.

Member @mad jew is at rank 10, so @Weaselboy will need to pass him to get into the Top 10. Looking at the line slopes, it looks like @Relentless Power will pass @GoCubsGo first.

Likes

When post-count data is collected for MacRumors users, their Likes counts have also been collected, when possible. The graph below shows the growth in weekly Likes counts for the top-Liked users I collect data for.

You'll see some members with high Likes who don't appear in other post-count graphs. There can be different reasons for this, such as posting in an uncounted forum (where Likes nonetheless count), or by making posts that often get multiple Likes.

Posts per Week

The above graphs showing weekly post growth are cumulative. That is, each line represents the cumulative growth of a user's post count relative to their post count at the start of the overall interval.

In the following, we look at the number of posts per week. This will make changes from week to week more obvious. For example, if someone makes exactly 20 posts every week, then their line in this graph would be flat at a level of 20. In the cumulative post-growth graph, their line would rise at a constant upward slope of 20 units per week. If they then drop to 18 posts per week, their posts-per-week line would drop by 2 units, a step that would easily be visible here, while their growth line would show only a slight flattening.

The upper graph shows the Top 5 prolific posters, from Table 3, and the lower one the next 5 in the Prolific Top 10.


The Prolific Ones

Members @Apple_Robert and @C DM had large changes in their post rates. The break between before July 2020 and after is very clear in the slopes of their graphed lines. But we have a more detailed view of their post counts, in the samples taken every week.

In the first graph I made, I showed every week from Jan 2020 thru Dec 2020. This was very cluttered indeed, with all the X-axis dates overlapping. The next graph was bi-weekly (fortnightly), which produced a more legible result:

We can see when each one started their increased posting rate. We can also see how the traditional prolific posters fared over the same time period.

The actual ranks of the first 11 match their January projections, except the perennial overachiever @Apple fanboy overtook not only Doctor Q, but Applejuiced.

Some actual post counts are below the projections, as several users posted at a reduced rate. @C DM is a notable exception, with an increase in average post rate to almost 15 posts per day. His previous average was about 1.5 posts/day, so that's about 10 times more posts/day.

The actual ranks in the range 18-30 are close to their projections, except that @Rogifan advanced farther than predicted, and @Apple_Robert arrived from the hinterlands.

Outside the Top 50, several posters advanced more than predicted. In some cases, there was only a minor change to ther post rates. In others, the rate increased significantly.

Curious to know if there was a significant up turn in posts (generally) when the post merge was turned off globally?

This graph shows @Apple fanboy advancing past Doctor Q in August, then past Applejuiced in December. This was the only change in rank in the Top 10.

@Doctor Q shows an unexpected drop in post count around mid-December. I only noticed this when I made the graphs, so I haven't had time to look into a possible cause. His post counts for the two dates are:
2020-12-13 38330 posts​
2020-12-20 38269 posts​
That's a difference of 61 posts. They probably slipped behind the sofa cushions.

Member @mad jew is at rank 10, so @Weaselboy will need to pass him to get into the Top 10. Looking at the line slopes, it looks like @Relentless Power will pass @GoCubsGo first.

When I looked at the graph depicting the "likes" count, my first thought was "they like me, they really like me!" [apologies and thanks to Sally Field]

I noticed a consistency in my appearance on all the graphs, too, which makes sense since I do tend to post daily in at least a couple of subforums and threads (especially the Photo of the Day threads).

I don't recall seeing anything notable.

In general, I think it would have had relatively little effect, because most people don't post sequentially anyway. I see it occasionally in a few forums, and typically from a few posters. One thing that might mask its appearance in post counts is when the forum is uncounted (see 1st post above for list). Another is that I only track members with 5000+ posts (or 4000+ historically). A fair number of times, when I see sequential posts in places like News threads or iPhone forums, the members are well below the threshold where I'd be seeing them.

Fair enough. I’ve just noticed it myself more with my own posts. But I guess things like an iPhone launch have a bigger blip.

Also now I’ve moved into the top five is it you or @arn who send me my complimentary MacBook Pro? I promise to just use it for number crunching and not world domination or anything!

You have to order it yourself, using the MacRumors Vouchers we mail you.

Well, "mail" is a bit of a stretch. We use a pigeon courier service. It takes 'em a while to cross The Pond.

Thanks as always for the stats, chown33.

When certain forum members are found to have an accelerated post rate, or they come flying into the Top 50 with a high post rate, it's interesting to see how they fare in the next round of stats.

Last time that would apply to cmaier, who has slowed somewhat but it still moving up.

This time it applies to Apple_Robert and C DM. I'll be sure to check back in 6 months!
