Remarks

1. There were no changes in rank among the Top 10 posters.
   
2. Member @C DM at rank 3 had a large increase in post rate (Delta Rate) last time, and a large decrease this time.
   
3. Member @Apple_Robert continues his prolific posting, advancing 15 positions, and also increasing his average daily post rate. He remains the only poster with an average rate faster than 1 post per hour.
   
4. The second largest increase in rank was @cmaier, who moved up 6.
   
5. @kdarling returns to the Top 50, after departing last time. Welcome back, kdarling.

Remarks

1. Apple_Robert is again the most prolific poster, this time with more than twice the number of posts as the 2nd place Apple fanboy.
   
2. @ericwn is the most prolific poster outside the Top 50. @AutomaticApple nearly matches him. This is the debut for both of them in the Tables.
   
3. Long-time prolific poster @Scepticalscribe fell to 15th place in prolificness. Nevertheless, she made over 1000 posts, which is over 6 posts per day.

The next user projected to surpass mad jew, moving into the Top 10, is @Apple_Robert. He'll edge out @Weaselboy, who was projected to be next in the January 2021 projection. If Apple_Robert is first to move into the Top 10, then Weaselboy will have to pass mad jew and another user (probably GoCubsGo) to enter the Top 10.

In short, January 2022 is likely to see several changes in the Top 10. This would also be the first time since July 2005 that mad jew won't be in the Top 10.

The actual ranks of the first 11 mostly match their January projections, with two exceptions. @Apple fanboy didn't make it past GGJstudios. If we look at his Delta Rate value, we can see it dropped significantly. He was probably distracted by something productive, like work or gardening.

Another member who fell below their projection was @Relentless Power, and one who exceeded theirs was @Apple_Robert.

Members @The Game 161 and @I7guy continue jockeying for position, and the "horse race" in positions 21 thru 26 also continues. The "horse race" makes for an interesting graph (posted later in this thread).

I mainly collect data on members with 5000 or more posts. Some members with fewer than 5000 posts appear in the table, because they were there historically, or because I added them due to some interesting posts.

Info About All Graphs

The horizontal X axes represent dates, and are labeled as YYYY-MM-DD.

The vertical Y axes are automatically determined, and are specific to a graph. The upper and lower limits of each graph are based on the range of values in the graphed data. This means that the steepness of line slopes can't be compared between different graphs.

Colors are also automatically assigned, from a rotating pool of 12 colors. This can make color-to-name conversion ambiguous when more than 12 members are graphed. Use each graph's legend or key on the right to resolve any duplicate colors. The legend is arranged in the same order as the right-most points of each graph.

A dashed line is automatically assigned to inactive users (no posts in the latest measurement period), and a solid line to active users (at least 1 post in latest period). To reduce the clutter, the only inactive user typically shown is @mad jew.


Graphs of Top 50 Post-Counts Over Time

These two graphs show the progression of semi-annual post counts for the Top 50 posters, starting from 2016 July 3rd (2016-07-03). Users who made no posts in the last 6 months are omitted, except for the historical benchmark represented by @mad jew. Member @MacNut appears in both graphs, with different colors. This overlap is intentional.

Top 50 Posters: In Two Groups

A horizontal graph line (or nearly so) is a member with a low post rate.

A steeply rising slope indicates a high post rate. If the slopes of the segments steepens over time, that user is increasing their post rate. If the slopes flatten, the post rate is falling off.

In the upper graph we can see a big change in @Apple_Robert's post counts after 2020-07-03 vs. before. By contrast, @Apple fanboy has a fairly consistent slope, at least at this multi-year scale.

@GGJstudios made a single post in the last 6 months, which counts as active, but is otherwise flat. @C DM's prior posting rate contrasts sharply with his rate in this period.

In the lower graph, @Fishrrman has a pretty consistent slope (post rate), and is projected in Table 4 to move into the Top 25 by the next Statistics Day. @Blue Velvet is the minimally posting member in this graph. She also manages to get the most suitable line-color in the graphs. Sadly, "velvet" isn't an available line style.


Cluttered Graphs

The first graph below shows all the members from the two graphs above in a single graph. It's cluttered and difficult to read. We can still see a marked change in line slope for Apple_Robert.

The second graph, which adds the remaining inactive members in the Top 50, is even more cluttered.

The main reason for showing these is to compare slopes (post-count growth rates). This gives an idea of how much the most prolific posters actually post.

Graphs of Weekly Post-Count Growth

The following graphs show weekly post-count growth for the most prolific 36 users, divided into 3 groups of 12 each. There is no overlap between groups.

Each line represents one user's weekly post-count growth, relative to their post count at the start of the measurement period 6 months ago. In effect, each member gets their own "starting count", and the graph shows how their individual post count grows from week to week.

If a member makes a lot of posts for a week, then their line will slope up more steeply. If they make no posts for a week, then their line will be flat. In rare cases, a line may drop a little, which means that some posts were deleted, or a thread was moved to an uncounted forum.

Since the members of each group have different ranges, you can't compare slopes between graphs. A steep line in one graph might not represent the same post rate in another graph. To get a sense of overall weekly growth, we need a single graph with all the Prolific Posters, which is shown after the groups of 12.

The gap between 2021-05-09 and 2021-05-23 is 2021-05-16. I missed that date due to a scripting error. I didn't notice the error until the 21st, and by then there was little point in trying to get a sample in, since the next scheduled sample was only 2 days away.


Weekly Post Growth

Notice the Y axis numbers in Group 1 vs. Group 2. Due to the prodigious post rate of the top poster, Group 1's top Y is about 6 times higher than that of Group 2.

In Groups 2 & 3 we see some posters with wavering lines, which means several weeks with fewer posts (flat), and several weeks with many more (steep) . In some cases, you can see when they increased posting around events like product announcements.

In the above graph we can compare slopes, which gives a better sense of how prolific the top posters are, compared to almost everyone else.

This graph is similar to the one directly above, but it omits the most prolific poster. Because the vertical max depends on the range of values graphed, it shows more detail in the lower range. Compare the upper graph's Y-max to the lower graph's.

Fun With Graphs

Welcome to the July 2021 version of "Fun With Graphs". We'll see some graphs of things other than the usual semi-annual and weekly posts.


Top 50 Changes: Details

Race Into the Top 10

This graph shows @Weaselboy approaching @mad jew (dotted line), who occupies position 10 in the Top 10. It also shows two other prolific posters, @Apple_Robert and @I7guy, rapidly approaching the Top 10.

If the projection in Table 5 above is correct (Date to Surpass mad jew's Post Count), then Apple_Robert will beat Weaselboy into the Top 10, and mad jew will drop to position 11. That means Weaselboy will need to surpass mad jew and one other member to move into the Top 10.


If Apple_Robert's posting rate continues, he'll be hard to keep up with. He'll still have a long way to go to reach the top spots, as shown in this graph. It covers about a year, sampled every 2 weeks:

Just eyeballing the post count growth, it looks like it will be about 2 years or so to pass @Scepticalscribe, and another year to pass @maflynn. That's assuming his rate holds up, and neither of the other two members has any posts.


Mid-Range Horse Race

This "horse race" has been going on for a few statistics cycles. Last time, in January, Apple_Robert was near the back of the field. Since that time, he's passed everyone and leads the field.

Meanwhile, cmaier passed Fishrrman and Rogifan, and is heading for @eyoungren.


Likes

When post-count data is collected for MacRumors users, their Likes counts have also been collected, when possible. The graph below shows the growth in weekly Likes counts for the top-Liked users I collect data for.

You'll see some members with high Likes who don't appear in other post-count graphs. There can be different reasons for this, such as posting in an uncounted forum (where Likes nonetheless count), or by making posts that often get multiple Likes.

This shows the growth of Likes for the Top 10 Likes-recipients over the last 6 months.

Apple_Robert is prolific here as elsewhere, but @Clix Pix is notable for her Likes/Post ratio:

The Prolific Ones

Member @Apple_Robert was the most prolific poster, with more than twice as many posts as @Apple fanboy, in second position. We can look at these and some other prolific posters with a longer view and at a different scale.

This graph goes back about a year and a half, to Feb 2020, and shows post growth at 3-week intervals.

We can see when each member changed their post rate (line slope), and whether they posted steadily (e.g. Apple fanboy) or more irregularly (cmaier).

I approve of the dotted line for mad jew's post count. It's a historical bar that is now a point of interest as users pass into once-seemingly-unreachable territory.

Actually, agree with @Doctor Q; while the stats are terrific - and always well worth reading closely - the thoughtful analysis that accompanies each set of stats makes for a fascinating read.

Wow! I tend to be on here every day and post at least once, but usually more than that....but even so I wasn't expecting to see that I've steadily and consistently moved up the ranks to be #75 now in the overall ranking and #42 in the currently active top 50 posters and #7 in the to 50 Prolific Posters! Mostly it's my daily participation in the Digital Photography subforum that accounts for a lot of this....

Thanks for these fascinating statistics and rankings and I agree that the analysis and explanation really clarifies things for us, especially those like me who are not usually into numbers. Actually makes it kind of fun!

I indeed have been very busy with work, gardening and exercising so was expecting to be posting less than usual. Mrs AFB keeps me very busy. As does the Boss and the AW!
Anyway I shall continue to be present and try to be more consistent in my posting!
Also because I post in a limited number of areas, I always find it fascinating how many of the top 50 (and not just those that don’t post anymore), I don’t recognise. But I suppose if they like me are posting in (different) specific forums, it’s not that surprising.

I think that the peaks and troughs of online (and indeed, MR) activity can sort of mirror circumstances domestically, personally or professionally in one's life.

In my case, my most active period on these fora coincided pretty closely with the decline of my mother's health, when I was at home, - I had to be around - and was responsible for her care, which meant plenty of time online, and I was grateful for the outlet that MR provided for me at that time.

However, even though I am also at home a lot of of the time during the pandemic, things have changed.

Would it be possible to compute the variance in the measurement of "posts per 6 months," across all measured periods since each member was tracked? Those with the lowest variance (or standard deviation) would be noted as having the most consistent post rates, whether they were high or low in the Top 50 rankings.

That’s an interesting point. Did posts overall go up or down during Covid lockdown? That would make for an interesting graph @chown33
