Remarks

1. @maflynn is closing in on 69,000 posts. He was at 68,144 in July, and is at 68,750 now, so should break 69 kiloposts before the next Statistics Day in July 2022.
   
2. @Weaselboy moved into the Top 10, pushing @mad jew into position 11. This is the first time since July 2006 that mad jew hasn't been in the Top 10.
   
3. @Apple_Robert had a markedly lower post rate compared to July, falling to about 1/3 of his prior rate. This decreased rate meant he didn't beat Weaselboy into the Top 10, and only advanced 2 ranks.
   
4. @Fishrrman continues his steady advance, moving up 6 positions.
   
5. Debuting in the Top 50, @TheYayAreaLiving rockets in at rank 50, with an average post rate of nearly 3 posts per hour. She first appeared in the statistics in the July 2021 sample, only 6 months ago, so this is the fastest move ever into the Top 50.
   
6. @kdarling was edged out of the Top 50 by a single post from TheYayAreaLiving.

Remarks

1. TheYayAreaLiving is by far the most prolific poster, with nearly 5 times as many posts as the 2nd place @Apple fanboy. She had a total of 5565 posts in the July 2021 statistics, which was the first time I started measuring her post counts.
   
2. Prior Prolific Poster Plummets Perilously, Perhaps Permanently!! @Apple_Robert was the most prolific poster in July 2021, with 7475 posts in the prior 6 months. This time he's at about 1/3 of that in his 6-mo post count, and still manages to come in at 3rd place.
   
3. @turbineseaplane and @Shirasaki are the two most prolific posters outside the Top 50.

In July 2021, Apple_Robert was projected to be the next one to surpass mad jew. That didn't happen, because his post rate declined over the subsequent 6 months, and Weaselboy made it past mad jew and into the Top 10.

Apple_Robert's new projection is for late July 2022, within a few days of the projection for TheYayAreaLiving. Both dates are close enough to the next Statistics Day (3 July) that one of them might surpass mad jew before then.

The actual ranks of the first 11 mostly match their January projections, with one exception.
@Apple_Robert had a large decrease in post rate (Delta Rate), so @Weaselboy moved past mad jew and into the Top 10, despite also having a decreased post rate.

Comparing the actual vs. projected post counts, @Fishrrman and @Relentless Power came closest to matching their projections. Fishrrman's actual post count was 23236, with a projection of 23326, which are anagrammatic numbers (same digits, different order).

Info About All Graphs

The horizontal X axes represent dates, and are labeled as YYYY-MM-DD.

The vertical Y axes are automatically determined, and are specific to a graph. The upper and lower limits of each graph are based on the range of values in the graphed data. This means that the steepness of line slopes can't be compared between different graphs.

Colors are also automatically assigned, from a rotating pool of 12 colors. This can make color-to-name conversion ambiguous when more than 12 members are graphed. Use each graph's legend or key on the right to resolve any duplicate colors. The legend is arranged in the same order as the right-most points of each graph.

A dashed line is automatically assigned to inactive users (no posts in the latest measurement period), and a solid line to active users (at least 1 post in latest period). To reduce the clutter, the only inactive user typically shown is @mad jew.


Graphs of Top 50 Post-Counts Over Time

These two graphs show the progression of semi-annual post counts for the Top 50 posters, starting from 2016 July 3rd (2016-07-03). Users who made no posts in the last 6 months are omitted, except for the historical benchmark represented by @mad jew. Member @MacNut appears in both graphs, with different colors. This overlap is intentional.

Top 50 Posters: In Two Groups

A horizontal graph line (or nearly so) is a member with a low post rate.

A steeply rising slope indicates a high post rate. If the slopes of the segments steepens over time, that user is increasing their post rate. If the slopes flatten, the post rate is falling off.

In the upper graph we can see the flattening in @Apple_Robert's post rate in the most recent period, compared to the two prior periods. In contrast, @Apple fanboy has a fairly consistent slope, at least at this multi-year scale.

In the lower graph, @Huntn has a pretty consistent slope (post rate) over multiple years. We also see the meteoric rise of @TheYayAreaLiving, who first exceeded 5000 posts only 6 months ago, so only began having their post counts sampled.


Cluttered Graphs

The first graph below shows all the members from the two graphs above in a single graph. It's more cluttered and difficult to read. We can still see a marked change in line slope for Apple_Robert, and the brief but extreme upward slope for TheYayAreaLiving

The second graph, which adds the remaining inactive members in the Top 50, is even more cluttered.

The main reason for showing these is to compare all the slopes together (post-count growth rates). This gives an idea of how much the most prolific posters actually post.

Graphs of Weekly Post-Count Growth

The following graphs show weekly post-count growth for the most prolific 36 users, divided into 3 groups of 12 each. There is no overlap between groups.

Each line represents one user's weekly post-count growth, relative to their post count at the start of the measurement period 6 months ago. In effect, each member gets their own "starting count", and the graph shows how their individual post count grows from week to week.

If a member makes a lot of posts for a week, then their line will slope up more steeply. If they make no posts for a week, then their line will be flat. In rare cases, a line may drop a little, which means that some posts were deleted, or a thread was moved to an uncounted forum.

Since the members of each group have different ranges, you can't compare slopes between graphs. A steep line in one graph might not represent the same post rate in another graph. To get a sense of overall weekly growth, we need a single graph with all the Prolific Posters, which is shown after the groups of 12.

The gap between 2021-11-14 and 2021-11-28 is 2021-11-21. I completely missed that date, and didn't realize it until the following week.


Weekly Post Growth

Notice the Y axis numbers in Group 1 vs. Group 2. Due to the prodigious post rate of the top poster, Group 1's top Y is over 8 times higher than that of Group 2.

We can also clearly see the point in time when TheYayAreaLiving's post rate drastically increased. Before then, she was at about the same rate as other posters. After, there were a couple weeks at a much higher rate, then a slower week similar to before the takeoff, then an acceleration to a fairly consistent high rate.

In Groups 2 & 3 we see some posters with wavering lines, which means several weeks with fewer posts (flatter), and several weeks with many more (steeper) . In some cases, you can see when they increased posting around events like product announcements.

In the above graph we can compare slopes, which gives a better sense of how prolific the top poster is, compared to everyone else.

This graph shows only the most prolific 2 posters. This shows how much the top poster's rate exceeded 2nd place.

This graph omits the most prolific 2 posters. Because the vertical max depends on the range of values graphed, it shows more detail in the lower range. Compare this graph's Y-max to the ones preceding it.

Welcome to the January version of "Fun With Graphs". We'll see some graphs of things other than the usual semi-annual and weekly posts.


Top 50 Changes: Details

Race Into the Top 10

This graph shows @Weaselboy surpassing @mad jew (dotted line), who occupies position 10 in the Top 10. It also shows two other prolific posters, @Apple_Robert and @I7guy, rapidly approaching the Top 10.

Because Apple_Robert's post rate decreased in early July, around the date of the July statistics, I've extended the dates on the X-axis back a few weeks, so you can see the slope change more clearly. Again, the gap at 2021-11-21 is a missed sample date.

The dotted line is mad jew, sitting at rank 11, and basically acting as a boundary mark for the Top 10.

I've also extended the time period to nearly all of 2021, instead of just 6 months. To make the dates readable along the X-axis, the interval between dates is two weeks instead of one. The gap is again Nov 21.

Since I only started sampling TheYayAreaLiving's post counts right before the July statistics, her line only starts in late June.

Notice that you can still see Apple_Robert's reduction in rate around June-July, and TheYayAreaLiving's marked rate increase in September.

What used to be a "horse race" is now definitely spreading out. There's a burst by @cmaier in September, also passing @eyoungren, but most others have a fairly consistent rate.

This graph shows the 10 most prolific posters of the past 6 months, and covers about a year at 2-week intervals. I chose a year because it highlights both post-rate changes and new entrants in post-count sampling.

We can see when each member changed their post rate (line slope), and whether they posted more steadily (e.g. Apple fanboy) or more irregularly.

This graph shows @Weaselboy surpassing @mad jew (dotted line), who occupies position 10 in the Top 10. It also shows two other prolific posters, @Apple_Robert and @I7guy, rapidly approaching the Top 10.

Because Apple_Robert's post rate decreased in early July, around the date of the July statistics, I've extended the dates on the X-axis back a few weeks, so you can see the slope change more clearly. Again, the gap at 2021-11-21 is a missed sample date.

One of the things I find interesting is the people who post regularly, yet you never come across. Must be because of the diversity of sun forums and the like.

I used to do stocktake for all forum members. Now chown33 is in charge of it.

Technically, only members with post counts over 5000, with a few below that count for historical reasons.

Besides, all the actual data collection is entirely scripted these days. I periodically check a few counts manually, to make sure the scripts still work properly, but it's been over a year since I had to fix anything.
