Anyone has more pics of these cool setups? Im thinking of buying the 24 led cinema display.

Cinema Display and MacBook Pro 15 i7 CPU heat

Hi all,

I just bought a 15" MBP with i7 dual core processor and an accompanying Cinema Display and was planning on using this combo to as my desktop setup. I also have iStatMenus to monitor CPU heat, fan RPMs, etc. When I use my MBP without the Cinema Display iStatMenus shows an average CPU temp. of about 48 deg. Celsius and fan RPMs of just under 2,000 for the two fans. However, when I close the MBP (clamshell mode) and hook it up to the Cinema Display, the heat goes up to around 65 deg. Celsius and fans run around 4,800 RPMs on average. Needless to say, the fans are very noticeable at that speed and it's pretty distracting.

Does anyone else have this heat/fan issue when using the MBP in clamshell mode with the Cinema Display? I guess this could be attributed to having the laptop closed as the heat vent in the back seems to be somewhat blocked when the lid is down (strange design on the part of Apple, I must say) or is it based on the addl. graphics processing needed to run the ACD?

Yes, I could run the MBP with the lid open, but it's so much tidier to have the laptop closed and just view the ACD...

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Ian

I use my MBP 13", lid closed, with my ACD everyday and my temps are barely higher than when using the 13" display and my fans stay under 2000 RPM.

The ACD doesn't seem to require much more graphics horsepower. It would seem that you have a problem.

Do you notice whether or not the integrated or discrete GPU is running when your temps spike?

Hi Macboy4,

Thanks for the reply. I see 4 panes in the Activity Monitor for "CPU" (for 2 physical cores and 2 virtual cores due to hyperthreading, I'm assuming). Where would I be able to view the GPU usage you mentioned? Sorry, but I just made the move from PCs to Macs so I'm learning as I go...

For what it's worth, below is my hardware setup from the System Profiler:

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro6,2
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Processor Interconnect Speed: 4.8 GT/s
Boot ROM Version: MBP61.0057.B09
SMC Version (system): 1.58f16

Once you let me know where to view the GPU usage, I'll test it out with the ACD and let you know what I see.

Thanks again,

Ian

Refurb ACD came in today! It's perfect. This is a poor iPhone photo, but I'll post better pics later.

And just for grins, there's a pic of my setup at work... even though it's not an ACD.:)

What would be more win is if the ACD displayed a live video stream of you taking the picture, instead of just a mere reflection.

I really want to buy one of these monitors, but I have one concern.

I have a set of Bose Companion 3 SII speakers and the connect via 3.5mmAudio Jack. Now my question is, would I have to connect the jack directly to my MBP, or is there some way I can connect it to the monitor.

I thought Bose Companion 3 connect through USB. For that you could use one of the USB ports on the back of ACD.

You will have to plug directly to your MBP.

You are probably aware of that fact that if you run on an external monitor, you will use the nVidia chip. The nvidia chip in turn helps to heat up the other chips (they're on the same heat pipe). I have the same problem, although, my temps are a bit lower (and it's always super hot in my room 26-30)

But i think it can be normal if you run a few apps in the background. Mine regularly goes up to 65 deg and fans kick in with very little stress (for instance a time machine backup, thunderbird downloading emails, etc)

Hope this helps,

Tom

Hate to sound like a massive geek, but in order to avoid plugging in the 3.5mm, I've bought the airport express and now stream to my speakers wirelessly ;)

What mouse mat is that?

IceMat v2

IceMat went under sometime last year (2007) after they were bought out by SteelSeries. Before they were bought out, IceMat had released The IceMat v1, IceMat v2, and IceMat Syberia headphones. Now, the V1 was the first glass mousepad to be released, and at the time the company went under, they could be had for around $60, the V2 has been $75 everywhere you look, and the SteelSeries I2 (which is the V2 with the SteelSeries logo on it) was the same (look here http://www.steelseries.com/int/products/surfaces/i-2).

would it work for anything that gives sound?

Like YouTube, Games, Movies

I heard that it only works with iTunes, something called AirTunes I think...

Hi Tom,

Good to hear that I'm not the only one experiencing higher temps with the ACD and the macbook in clamshell mode.

I just ran a quick experiment where I played a 2 minute movie project in iMovie with various other apps running in the background (4 Safari windows, MS Word, Activity Monitor, System Profiler, iStatMenus, etc.) and the GPU stayed relatively cool while the CPU heated up quickly. At the beginning of the run, the CPU was at around 57 deg., the GPU at 53 and the GPU diode at 58. 1 minute into the movie, the CPU was at 70, the GPU at 58 and the GPU diode at 69. Thus, it looks like, at least in this case, the CPU seems to be the culprit for the heat. The GPU itself stayed below 60 deg. the entire time, though the GPU diode stayed right around the same temp. as the CPU.

On the positive side - today, with the lid closed on the MBP and the ACD hooked up, the "resting" temp. of the CPU is only 59 deg. and the fans are back down to 1900 RPMs each, which seems more reasonable that yesterday's resting temp. of 65 deg with the fans at 5000 RPMs nearly all the time. Strange...

Can I ask what your "resting" CPU and GPU temps are? Mine seem to be around 57 for the CPU and 58 for the GPU when I have the apps above open but am not running an iMovie project (but just have iMovie app open). Do you ever see heat above 70 degrees when running any apps?

Thanks,

Ian

I scored a refurb 24" from the apple store and have had it for about a week now and I love it... my Eames molded plastic chair arrived today (hard to tell from this photo) so I figured it was a good time to get a good shot of the updated setup.

This looks great.
How do you like the keyboard tray?

What kind of desk do you have there? I really like it and am looking for something similar.
