Exactly. I could understand if it had some things that patent was talking about. A WiFi Card, extra HD and no wires- less power. As it is, there is no benefit to getting that monitor; except for it's speakers, iSight ... does it even have anything else? The look?

One thing that isn't mentioned often is that it charges your MacBook/Air/Pro. That may not seem like a big deal, but it means I don't have to buy an extra adapter or carry mine to and from work every day (I commute by bike). That shaves off $60-$80 and/or some weight not carried. Since I also work at a university that effectively puts the display at about $720-$740 for me.

Do you have an extension or email address? I think that's the guy I need to talk to.

No, I'm afraid that I didn't get his extension...just called the 1-800 Apple store number and was connected to him. I would call back and try again-after all, the person I chatted with this am told me they weren't going on sale until later in the month.

I think I'll do just that, thanks.

Good luck!

I just tried again and the salesperson took my order no problem. Order status says Shipping: November. Now I just have to wait for the brown truck. I just wanted to make sure I got in on the first batch in case the production is slow.

Good to hear...guess we're both playing the waiting game now...however, it will probably be a white truck...Apple usually uses FedEx (thank goodness)!

Funny, we're in the same position. I work at a University also. It makes the price $804? Close to that.

I have a MacBook Pro and I never carry my adaptor when I'm at work. I usually have 5 hours to kill before I leave campus. It ends up making it 4 or 4:30 hours and then I just use my iPod Touch for a TV show or something.

I was really hoping for the dock to kill cables. I'm just not too big of a fan of them. I plan on getting a new MacBook Pro sometime next summer. Hopefully I'll see a Quad-Core by then. (I can hope, right?)

If that iMac Dock-ish thing is for a Tablet, it would make me think about that. If not, I will just sell my current MBP and get buy that monitor. I just don't think the price is worth it. But it is oh so cool and I have some time to save up extra cash.

But I mean come on. $800 for a monitor? Just seems like an awful lot.

$800 for a monitor? Just seems like an awful lot.

$800 for a high quality 24" H-IPS display is a steal. I just paid (gladly) around $1150 for the NEC 24" H-IPS monitor and it's a superb monitor. (I think Apple is using NEC's 24" H-IPS panel in their new 24" CD.)

If you're doing any image-editing work where accurate colors are important, especially from ANY angel other that straight on dead-nuts-perfect, then IPS is the only way to go! To someone who wants accurate image quality and a decent looking image from any angle other that dead nuts zero, $800 is a bargain for a 24" wide screen.

By the way, when you're sitting about 1-2 feet from the monitor, the sides of a 24" wide panel are at considerably different viewing angle than the center of the screen is.... and THAT's where an IPS panel beats ALL other technologies. Pay they $800 and be thrilled.

The NEC is a really nice monitor. :) I doubt the new 24" ACD LED unit is at that level though. When I checked the technical specifications, there was extremely basic information available. No data on LUT size (8 bit,...). Nothing.

Due to that, and the marketing, it seems the new 24" ACD is aimed at the non professional consumer. So $899 seems a little steep to me. Especially when for an additional $100 (slightly under), you can have the NEC 2490WUXi sitting in front of you. :p

nano... could be the NEC is indeed superior to the 24" ACD, but it's possible that the Apple may be a very, very close second.... we'll see.

It's quite possible. But without the detailed specs posted, it's too hard for me to make that assumption, particularly with some of the added features and marketing strategy behind it.

At this time, without more specs, I tend to compare it with the HP L2475W, which is a nice monitor in its own right. But it is a consumer model, based on a 24" H-IPS panel, and W-CCFL back lighting. It can be found for $592.99 w/ free shipping. For ~$300, I wouldn't bother with the LED back lighting on a consumer model, when the addition of another $100 can get you a real H-IPS based professional unit. ;)

I'm still working on figuring out what type of panel is in thing. For those that are interested, here is a pretty good discussion of it.

nano... the HUGE problem (for me) with the new HP 24" H-IPS is that it's a WIDE GAMUT monitor. This makes it a horrible choice for print professionals, though it may be great for web and game designers and web surfers. My hunch is that the new 24" ACD is a standard gamut display, otherwise, they're lost print professionals.

IIRC, it's an H-IPS panel made by LG.

I don't do anything like print work, but switching between sRGB and Adobe RGB (color triangle ) doesn't help?

I called in and ordered mine earlier today...for some reason, you could call in an order, but you just couldn't order it through the online process. I'm not sure why it's switched back from 7-10 days to just generic November again...perhaps they sold their quota for the time being? My "delivers by" dates are November 24-Dec 3rd just fyi.

UPDATE: I got a call from Apple last night and apparently there was an error and the LED display was not supposed to be listed as shipping and the CS reps weren't supposed to be taking orders yet. So, my order is null and void and I was offered a discount code for $45.00 off for a purchase of $300.00 or more for my inconvenience. I'm disappointed, but at least I'll get a little off when it does ship. The CS rep I spoke to did say that they still should be shipping around the same dates they quoted me....for what it's worth.

I haven't heard from them about my order.

You probably will today...might want to give them a call for good measure. One thing I noticed about my order that was strange, was that it continually said it was still "processing" and to "try again in 15 minutes" if you tried to change anything about it, such as payment method or shipping preference. It appeared to be stuck in limbo. I was going to call about it, but they beat me to it.

I checked and mine is stuck in processing too. It shows the shipping as "November". Waiting for my call. Kinda excited about the $45 thing if it comes through. Mine would have shipped from CA anyway and assuming they ship to the stores the same time and my order would have gone out it'd get it sooner that way. Also for some reason my Juniper card is taking forever to post my last payment so I used another credit card and wouldn't have gotten the 90-day no interest.

Sucks that it sounds like these aren't shipping as soon as was rumored (tomorrow).

Know what you mean...the $45.00 off has to be placed with a new order, from what I understand...it's a code that you put in when you place the order. I don't think the original order counts...in fact, I'm surprised that they haven't cancelled mine yet...it still shows delivers by November 24-Dec 3. I might give a call today just to be sure that I understand the situation again.

Update: I just got off the phone with Apple again, and for those who were able to put orders in, they won't go through...you will have to place another order when the display is officially released.

The UK on-line Apple Store is now saying "Ships: 7-10 business day" again, although you still can't order on-line.

I wonder if there has been some sort of production problem?

My order is supposedly null and void, yet it still is listed in my account and it still has the same ship dates and is still listed as "not yet shipped"...it hasn't been cancelled, but it still appears to be in limbo as you can't make any changes to it-if you try to, it still says "order processing, try again in 15 minutes". Not sure what's going on.

Mines still the same. Haven't received a call from Apple yet.

Canccom UK think they're going to have stock in "1 day" according to this.

I'll believe it when I see it. Still, I need to order through Apple anyway (~£250 saving on MBP and new ACD), so it doesn't matter who else has the thing in stock. A little frustrating.
