Check out thinksecret.com. It looks like you won't even be able to sync songs you currently have. You can only put songs you buy from the provider at $2 a pop.

If this report is correct, I have no idea why Apple is even involved.

This one actually looks better than motorolas attempt oh and its brit too! Wohoo!

Barring something incredible this week... I think I will also be getting a SE W800, or maybe the K750i. I don't like the UI on Moto phones... and my SE T610 has been amazing - especially with sync / sms with my PB!
Glad to hear you like your phone mate - as I have been scouring around for reviews over the past few weeks. Will wait till after the big announcement though - just in case Steve does surprise us with something better or a different gadget for me to buy.

You won't be sorry! If you don't mind the orange, the w800i is an amazing phone. Flashing the k750i, another beauty, to w800i firmware is a great idea. I started with an SE t610 and that phone is great! If you like that, then I'm sure you'll really enjoy both of these phones. The autofocus on the w800i (I believe it's found on the k750i as well) is amazing. Like I said, I just wished the disc2phone software that comes with the phone was as seamless as iTunes. If anything, it's made me buy CDs now instead of simply buying them off iTunes.

Either way, you should wait until the 7th. I hope that 25 song cap or 512mb/1gb limits for this phone is false. Jobs can't be THAT foolish, can he?

25 songs is the limit because the model showed had 128 mb. Maybe you can't change the memory card. But they will never limit to 25 songs in a phone where you can change cards. Not in a world whre you can get a 1 or 2GB memory card in a Sony.

The SE W800 isn't even available here in Australia yet anyway!
Have heard rumours it will be here in a week or so though!

I'm soooo overdue for a new gadget!
Maybe if Apple announce something cool apart from the whole phone saga with Moto... maybe I can buy the W800 and a new Apple product as well!
Ah well I'm clearly dreaming - so I should go to bed.

The cap may be incase either the code and or a device is stolen. It also might help limit Apple's liability during the testing of the device. As rumored in the past, Apple has sent some disguised devices home with employees for final stage testing. It would make sense if certain features were limited if people were testing them outside of the Apple campus.

Virgin have it lined up as an upcoming phone. I am guessing it will also be on a $49 plan like the 750i...a bit steep for the average infrequent call user.

Yeah, I want a new gadget but my money is onthe BT Mighty Mouse at Paris Expo s the lock for the next Apple purchase...

I don't see why anyone would even bother with an iTunes/iPod phone.

You will get my Treo when you pry it from my cold dead hands.

Yeah, I must say I keep eyeing off the Treos as a better alternative. Just can't get one on a cheap enough plan at present.

Do they completely work well with Mac's? Email, data, programs, sync?

I eyed off a couple of the blackberry products for some time - but Telstra's double dipping expensive plans keep stopping me. I don't necessarily want a LARGE smartphone either. I'm keen for a smart small phone that handles calls, sync's address and iCal as a minimum, allows for eaasy transfer of data from PB to phone and back... and looks great.

I also noticed the Sony Ericsson Aust website - has removed the "Coming" and now from their prespective it is part of their current range. I must go for a look this week - and see if I can find it.

OK...most people are missing the point!!! the phone is NOT an iPod! It is a PHONE.....yes it is iTunes capatable, but it is also a phone. It has to have memory to store your phonebook, presets, pictures, phone info, etc. So I think 25 songs is not bad at all. If you want more then bring your iPod (which isn't much bigger in the first place) but hey, say your stuck in a line or something, you pull out your phone and BAM your set...Im stoked for it...
What a load of tosh. The 25 song limit is OBVIOUSLY just for the test software.

Apple would never put their name on such a poor device.

It WILL be 512MB + or my name's not...

oh damn, where's that piece of paper

A month or so ago I posted that I had played with this iTunes phone but that I wasn't going to give away any of the secrets. Well, it turns out I didn't know more than 2 or 3! I talked with the beta tester again the other day and he mentioned that these test phones did have the 25 song limit on them. The limit was not based on memory card capacity, as the memory cards are removable and you can easily get a 512MB and maybe even a 1GB one.

Anyway, this is what I now know. Motorola and other cell phone companies are not secretive by nature. They announce products well in advance, and they have to register their products with the FCC in advance. The FCC of course publishes that information on their website...

The beta testers have now been informed that the final version of the software they were testing is incompatible with the hardware that will be released. This opened up a lot of discussion among the beta testers. They had been led to believe that the song limit was going to be artificially limited to something smaller than the smallest iPod available. But they were also led to believe that Apple was going to be increasing the capacity of the smallest Shuffle at the same time. They have no idea whether or not the phone will look like the phone on the FCC website. Motorola is under no obligation to actually sell that phone. It could be a decoy. They are also capable of timing the release of the information by the FCC, as they have lots of experience submitting new phone info.

Every single beta tester complained about the slow transfer speed (USB 1.1) as the test phone used the old-style proprietary Moto connector. All new Moto phones use mini-USB connectors that (with the proper hardware on the phone of course) are USB 2.0 capable.

So here is the deal:
Only a very small group within Motorola and Apple know anything about what this phone will look like and how many songs it will be capable of holding. The testers (who are the source of these rumors) don't know anything right now except that the hardware of the actual phone is not the same as the hardware in the test phones. It is possible that it will look the same as the test phones but have different hardware to keep the software from being installed on other phones. It is also possible that some hardware working it's way through the FCC right now is what will be sold. Who knows.

Basically, nobody knows what Apple is going to be introducing on Tuesday. Much like it should be :)

Heb1228,

That's not at all what the thinksecret article reported. Please read more carefully--or report more carefully--so that people don't freak anymore than they need to. From the article:

"The new phone will reportedly be available in two capacities, 256MB and 512MB, capable of storing about 70 and 140 songs, respectively. Users will not only be able to plug the phone into their computer to tap their iTunes Music Library for tunes, but will also have the ability of buying songs on the fly over Cingular's network, probably for about $2 a song, sources report."

all that stuff takes up relatively no space compared to even a 30 second mp3 ringtone. we're talkin under 300kb., the pictures part is up to u, but a phone is easily capable of having 512mb worth of memory and the limitations after that are up to the manufacturer - in this case motorola and apple.

Motorola ...

Whatever it may be that Apple will show on Wednesday, I hope it is not just the Motorola Phone. Oh wait: Talking about Motorola: Aren't they the company that continually overpromises and underdelivers? (I seem to remember something about computer chips, but that was a looong time ago, before IBM took over the "under performance" task) :D

Here in the UK the PSP is just being launched today, which makes me think......... I'd like one, but I think I'll wait until next week's announcement. I'd much prefer to download a movie via iTunes, rather than buy a UMD disc..
If I had a PSP, I would use it to watch DivX and save some money...

How foolish can you be to underestimate the Power of Steve's Reality Distortion Field. All of you are knocking the ludicrousy of a 25 song limit now, but come September 7th, you'll be wondering why it hadn't dawned on you that 25 songs was the revolution.

Steve is going to announce that, after long research into what was wrong with the current market, Apple has found that what consumers want is less music. 25 songs in your pocket is so much more compact and concise. Apple is going to revolutionise the way we listen to two-dozen tracks.
Less is the new more.

I have a few albums that have 27 or 28 songs... :(

Looks like its true about the 25 song cap.
It's true that the pre-release prototype phones (that were probably distributed under NDA) have a cap. And that people are working on hacking them already.

Says nothing about the production model.

This is just as dumb as all the people who are insisting that the shipping MacTel boxes will be identical to the developer test boxes.

pssst....hey buddy... over here... yeah, uhm, this post is from last september when the Rokr was coming out. There is no 25 song limit, although there is a 100 song limit if I remember correctly. Check out Cingular and you'll see the Rokr and the Slvr with iTunes. ;)
