Here is a good site to check for dead pixels and yellow tinting:

http://www.imac.squeaked.com/

Click on "test your Imac"

My week 47 I7 is fine (now 18 days). I even had my wife look at the screen for defects and she couldn't see any either. I read on another site that Apple may be replacing graphics cards although I don't know for sure if this has been confirmed. If this is a card issue I wonder if Apple will recall/replace cards on machines built prior to a specific week:confused:?

For the first time reported here, Apple has acknowledged that the yellow tinge as an known issue.

I recently purchased a new 3.0 dual core 27" iMac from best buy, disregarding all the "known" issues. (hard drive noise, and tinted screens) I took it out of the box and hooked it up...PERFECT condition. No issues at all.....at least for 3 weeks anyways. Last week I logged on to this website and automatically saw the dreadful yellow tint at the bottom of my screen. It was all the way across and about 2 inches high. I instantly called apple.

Apple informed me it was NOT a known problem and that I could take it to a "local" Apple approved repair station. (I live in Arkansas and we have not one Apple store in our wonderful state) They said I would be without my computer for up to 3 weeks! This was not an option for me so I declined and got off the phone a little upset!

Then Apple called me yesterday...and TOTALLY REDEEMED THEIR SELVES! A Mac engineer by the name of Tye called me and told me that the yellow tinge was a definite issue that they knew about and were researching it thoroughly.

He then informed me that they were going to send me a brand new replacement iMac free of charge...AND they are going to UPGRADE me to the i5 at no additional cost to me!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! I was wanting the i5 but couldn't see putting forth the extra cash at the time of purchase.

He took all my info and set everything up for me. I directed him to the gray bar test on this site which he said was a big help. Due to shipping delays on the i5's i will be without a computer for up to 2 weeks, but i think I can make due considering the conditions! BEST customer support help I have EVER received!

week 49 i7 ...

Received my replacement (week 49) and used it for two days. Although it's much better then the previous week 45 machine, this one still have the yellow tinge, especially the lower right corner. I'm going to call Apple asking them to replace the machine or the screen after they fix the issue since it's really pointless to swap it out now.

Here are my pictures:

I hope I made the correct decision to sent it back and asked for a new one....

DigitalColor Meter

No question that the tinge is present, but why doesn't Apple's DigitalColor Meter make the distinction?

Using any of the available settings, the bottom and top bar read the same.

Perhaps it is too subtle?

Curious.

Because this is a hardware problem, not a software problem. Were you to take an actual Color Temperature meter, and compare the top and bottom bars, there would be a difference, and a noticeable one. Using software will give you the same numbers because the bars are SUPPOSED to be the same color. The reason they are not is the fault of the display.

Just did the test, I was very happy I had no dead pixels Yeah! but I have the yellow tinge at the bottom......now what? should I call apple? I would hate to get a new machine and then find out I had some dead pixels.

I thought it might be something like that. So the panel is getting the correct information, just interpreting the data incorrectly. I guess the upside is that for those publishing, even though things appear tinged on the screen they are, in fact not tinged.

I supose that also means any remedy will be a hardware replacement and not a driver or software fix.....

At the time I also have no dead pixels, if my new one has a dead one, I will ask for a new one again...

You have the same decision I did. I thought I had to Jan. 7th to return mine but after reading apple's return policy it says "on line purchases". I bought mine in the store. So guess I can't return it for a switch as I'm one day past 14. May now call Apple tech and complain. I still worry I'll get another worse than this one. At least this one has no dead pixels.

What's interesting is that I looked at my old 24 inch iMac and noticed really bad yellow tinging in the top left corner. It was actually very severe. I had never noticed this in two years of usage, until I looked for it.

So it would seem that this type of problem has been present since at least the 24" iMac model in 2007.

Im thinking the displays maybe getting to hot over time, you have a lot of heat packed into a small space. Power supply, gpu, cpu, speakers etc all right there. Funny thing is where all the heat is at the top is fine, its the bottom part for my new machine that has what I call a offwhite look.

You have until Jan 7th too. I called my local Apple Store and confirmed this.

Wow!! Thanks. I'm so disappointed in the "yellowish" screen. Just can't bring myself to box it up and go through the routine "again" with no guarantee it will be better. With laptops I'd make them open it and take a peek but haven't done that with Imac. A bit harder to do in a mobbed store.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss...

My 21.5 base model has the yellow tinging. It's not too bad, but now that I know its there, it'll bug me forever. Getting an exchange set up with Amazon.

FWIW, mine is week 47.

OK. I'm back from the Apple Store. The 21.5 yellow guy is gone replaced with a new 27". I see no problem with the screen at all. No yellowish tint. Now unless heating up changes that after a few hours this one looks like a winner.

Good for you! You must be one of the few who's managed to get a 27" iMac with no yellow tint. What processor does it have? And (not to jinx), but keep your fingers crossed that the incessant flickering doesn't start! :)

3.06 27" Base. No tint. Flickering? Now I should read about that too. Haven't noticed anything.

Got my 27" i7 today. I was pretty nervous after read through the forums the last few weeks, but it's perfect :) week 50.

Got my week 50 27" i5 today... warm yellow area going down the middle of my screen, and more yellow on the bottom right... ugh..,
