@jm88

Well if apple have let you down so badly, why do you want to give them your hard earned money?

Has anyone successfully gotten Apple to issue a refund for this problem? I have a Late 09 21.5" and the screen has been replaced three times. I called Apple and got to the "highest level" of customer support which told me "there are variabilities in lcd displays" and that there was nothing he could do. I have Applecare til May 2013. Any advice?

eBay it while it's still good

A great test is just to open up an itunes or finder window with alternating white and grey gridlines, then hide the dock and make it expand to fill the full screen. Any yellow smudges become very apparent. Honestly, I find that's a better test than any of the other ones.

Also make sure to turn brightness down by like 30-50%, since that's how you'll be using it at home (since no one's home is as brightly lit as an Apple store).

You would be amazed with what an email can do. I thought what the hell? I'll email Tim Cook, not really expecting anything from that. I got a call the next day from Apple Executive Offices and they want the computer returned in exchange for a new similar 2011 model. My jaw hit the floor. I was told that this was a one time thing and that since it's a "consumer level product" there are "variabilities in lcd displays" but that they are willing to exchange it. I'm still kind of shocked but feeling like they made things right.

Pretty much the exact same story here.

So at least we know the exec team is now aware of the issue.

So my 27" display from late '09 has been yellow since day 1. I elected to do nothing to date, as it didn't appear that there really was a "fix". It amazes me that this problem continues on iMac units purchased today!

So do I need to start complaining about it, have them replace the screen a few times, then write an email to Tim Cook to actually have it corrected?

The 2405WFP Dell monitor I'm using right now has no such issues - kills me that I paid such a premium for a 27" iMac. I'd resigned myself to just ignore it - I think I need to unsubscribe to this thread!!

Same here...

NEW iMac 27" with OLD problems!
This is my second iMac (27" mid 2011) with issues in display! The first had a gray bar in the bottom of the screen, and this (a replacement) has a yellow tinge in the bottom of the screen.
I read about the problem... Apples wrote wich this matter was solved. So, why i have NOW (in year 2011) the same defect???
What do you think about?

The matter was never solved, just acknowledged.

Yeah it's bad process for sure but the new one I just got is flawless and the updated specs are a nice bonus too.

So does anyone know whats the cause of this issue? Has anyone been able to fix it?

Maybe it has something to do with the display touching a part and its interfering with something etc.. probably because of the fast assembly at the plant...

The most credible theory I've heard is that it's due to misalignment of the LED backlight diffusion layer. It needs to be super-precisely aligned and I guess the manufacturing process leaves too much margin for error, or it's prone to getting misaligned in shipping.

Rats. My new (refurb) May 2011 27" iMac has a grey/dark strip across the bottom of the screen and the right 1/3 of the screen is yellowish compared to the left side. I might not mind except I do photo editing, so this is not acceptable.

Fortunately I'm still within the two-week return period so back it goes. Based on this thread and other problems I'm having with the iMac I've decided to upgrade my PC. So much for my foray into the mac world.

This is what I hear also. the 24in imac's had this to some degree.

Does anyone know if third party displays have the yellow tinge?

If not, that makes choosing a Mac Mini even easier for me.

However, perhaps even third party displays have the yellow tinge too?

That's why I chose the Mac Mini. I haven't heard of any yellowing problems with the Dell 27" or the NEC 27" displays.

new iMac just bought

Just bought a iMac the other day. It is a 27inch version. What would you rate the image below in terms of screen quality. Sometimes I feel as though i am seeing yellow tinge, other times not, maybe I am imaging it. This photo was taken on a fairly ok camera.

What is the best angle for the photo, because it looks a little yellowish on the right hand side but when viewing it from my perspective it doesn't look as much as it does in the photo?

***update*** i did the test again with the lights off and tried different brightness and full brightness settings, i couldn't see any yellow at all :) I think i got lucky!!! yay.
