Just did this test and on my new base 21.5". Looks like the bottom half of my screen is slightly yellow.

Dunno, maybe its just me, but for my taste it isnt worth boxing it back up. I didnt even notice it until it was pointed out. If I worked on photos all day, I would see the concern. I was expecting a massive difference in color when I first started reading this thread, but thats not the case (at least for me).

I will hold off until a later date when it sounds like this is fixed and take it to Apple at that point.

As stated in my last post, I was not quite shure with my iMac's display.

But for now I've concluded, mine is OK:

1. Picture is flawless if you look at it from a distance of 2-3m (be shure to have your eyes at the Center of the viewing area!)

2. It is never as severe as in the example pics show here

3. I get the "slight tint" on each and every (non Mac) display here in the office - at least IF the display is bigger than 20" ! On my office display (HP LP2465), the lower screen border is also slightly darker in color.

So, the very very very slight "discolouration" of the lower bar is merely a viewing perspective thing after all. You can reassure by adjusting the display up&down.

Greetings,
SuAlfons

Edit: Dec. 18th: Now I'm shure it does have the yellow tinge. It's quite subtal and quite evenly from left to right so I have mistaken it for a view angle thing (see above). :-((((

I really am a nitpicker - unfortunately I did not buy at Apple directly, so it's more pain for me since there will almost certainly no §retunr" but only a "repair" path to go. And I guess it will be a long path without computer at home :-( Will go for it in the new year....

S**t, SuAlfons

The definitife test to prove this should be to turn the screen upside down (or hang yourself upside down from the ceiling with anti-gravity boots, for example), and still see the yellow tinge in the lower part of the screen. Anybody dares to do the test?

My newly-arrived i7 has no yellow tinge.
Perhaps I should now go to an optician and have my eyes tested, telling the optician that I can't see the yellow tinge on my iMac so I must be going blind.

I bought a stock i5 from an Apple Store tonight. I immediately noticed the yellow tinge after I opened up Safari and navigated to Google. I asked two separate people if they noticed anything strange with the screen, and they both pointed out immediately that the bottom half looked 'more colourful'. One of the people I asked was my mother, who is almost fifty and has terrible vision.

There aren't any other problems, such as hard drive noise or screen flickering, but I'm still going to exchange it tomorrow. Hoping to get a perfect screen tomorrow!

apple looking at a software update for yellow issue

just off the phone to apple they are looking at a software update for the yellowing issue.

though they r still coming to take my i7 away :( due to the 6 dead pixels in my isight :(

i hope it doesnt take the same time as this one took. ordered on the 11th nov delivered on the 15th dec.

must remember to take my extra ram out.. if i leave the ram i got from crucial and keep the ram supplied by apple do you think they will notice???

yes. ...but whether or not there will be any consequences for you, that's fairly doubtful. ...why you'd want to do that, I'm not sure, since it's pretty much the same stuff.

I'll have to remember to do the same thing... I'm fairly set on exchanging mine now, the yellow area of the screen HAS grown slightly in size, though not really in intensity thankfully... It's really the other problems I'm finding that are bugging me - like 10 stuck pixels in the iSight, and a blown left speaker, which makes using the stock speakers nearly impossible.

I the yellow tint viewable in boot camp?

If so then how can a software update fix this issue?

Unless it is a firmware update I suppose.

...just got the exchange confirmation ...

Hello from Berlin,
I got my 27'' IMac I5 3 weeks ago and was fully satisfied so far. But now I noticed the "yellow tint" and decided immediately to go for replacement. At first the hotline guy hadn't heard anything up to now regarding this issue. He let me perform some tests (remove all cables incl. power for a minute, then reconnect power and switch on holding the keys alt+cmd+r+p at the same time,...), but the lower half of the screen remained slightly yellow.

First proposal was to bring it to an Apple repair center to get the display exchanged..."By no means" !

Second proposal : Send it back to Apple and wait for an exchange Mac..."Certailnly not" !

Both ways would mean several weeks without computer, what is impossible for me !

Only after some minutes of resolute discussion he let me wait another 5 minutes to contact the sales-hotline, with the result that I will get a brandnew I5 within the next 2 weeks (highest priority promised). My yellow tint Mac will be picked up only after delivery of the replacement.

Provided that the new Mac will be flawless, this is a perfect solution from my point of view !:)

Have you requested to keep this faulty iMac until they deliver your replacement? In the UK this is not standard practice (generally has to be collected and booked back into warehouse before the replacement gets ordered), however they will make exceptions if requested therefore not leaving you without an iMac whilst you await the replacement to be delivered.

Do you guys even notice it with day to day work?

I ran the same test on my 20-inch cinema display, and the right side of my screen seems warmer. My iMac screen was better than the cinema in that regard, but it still didn't look exactly the same in every quadrant.

I mean, maybe displays are never perfect?

But do you really notice in day to day work?

Thanks.

Well, truth be told, I was seriously considering NOT returning it, and doing a REPAIR later on, since I was unsure as to whether or not the display issue would ever really be worked out, and didn't want to end up with one worse than I have... but I'm also noticing that the top of my machine, the aluminum, where it meets the glass, is actually WARPED! It's wavy, like wavy-gravy, man.. ;) DEFINITELY gettin' a new one.

Could you please post a picture of your screen with the test in this thread? It would give me hope in getting a perfect display with my replacement iMac. Thanks!

i would too..

I've no intention of running the "test" with this new iMac, let alone take photos of it. I ran the test on the last one before I returned it with a noisy hard drive and spotted the tiniest, most minute degree of difference in warmth between top and bottom.

If I can't see any problem with my naked eye on various flat-colored backgrounds, the problem does not exist for me and I don't need to run a test. It's like me saying I hear no noise wth the new iMac and somebody insisting there is noise to be heard if a microphone is placed against the computer.

In any case, taking a photo of a screen in uncontrolled lighting situations is worthless. The result would say more about the camera lens than the screen. And what will you view the photo on? A screen with a yellow tinge?

I don't believe the perfect iMac display exists. I have yet to see anybody post a picture of one. I'll believe it when I see it. I have only spent a few minutes on the new iMac in the stores and I did not view the test page, I was having to much fun in Aperture working on the enormous display. I could not tell that the screens had a tinge in the store from viewing photos, so I imagine it will go unnoticed by many, and some are just in denial.:p

I think those that do not have an issue should be respected and left in peace ... I never had an issue until I ran that damned test

I am sincerely sorry for you, but on the other hand I feel that you deserve to know the truth. This could potentially be a problem that further develops and causes more obvious trouble down the road. Don't you want to know that you might be at a higher risk for future problems?

Well to be honest I am not too bothered by the very mild yellow symptoms I have ... besides I have applecare so I will see where this all leads to. I was just referring to the other person's comment. Let's start enjoy our Mac guys, it is a phenomenal machine ;)

It truly is - and were mine only affected by the yellow (which it is, though subtly), I'd probably not exchange it. There are other factors at work for me, and I'm taking it in to swap it out tonight.

Hi all,

Just to add to this discussion.. my first 27" iMac screen was slightly yellow at the bottom but I only noticed it with the gray bar image screen... I switched that one out because of a loud HD, and my second 27" iMac was much worse - yellow on almost the whole right side.. switched that one out as well and now third 27" iMac is the worst.. Large yellow band going right down the center of the screen from top to bottom, and another band going down the right.. If this screen had the minimal bottom yellowing that my first one did I would be fine with it (as I only noticed the yellow bottom with the gray bar image screen), but what I have now really is unacceptable.. It is very noticeable, and is going back to Apple...

For those who only have minimal yellow on the bottom of the screen, I agree with not seeking out the issue may be the best bet.. I promised myself on my 3rd iMac that I would not even pull up the gray bar screen test, but the yellow banding down the center of my screen is VERY noticeable...

Edit: for those interested, it is a week 50, and also experiencing a loud/hum vibration the whole time the machine is on, so it has to go back to Apple regardless..
