Heya unamused matey,

The e-mail I received from Apple say it will be arriving around the 10th or 11th of December, however the Apple rep said it would take two weeks. Will wait and see.

Thanks for the tips. I've done a bit of research and you can get a HDMI to HDMI cable for the XBox and it comes with a separate optical out cable for 5.1 surround sound.

I've also ordered some top of the range headphones so hopefully they'd be able to plug right in. I'm hoping this Dr. Bott thing will work. Would be ironic if it does work... all this time it was right under our noses.

By the way, the iMac is definitely worth the wait. I've pretty much been glued to the thing. So much so the girlfriend has started moaning about lack of sexual gratification.

Got a tweet from @belkin replying to my question about their proposed cable that allows hdmi devices to be connected to the imac27 MDP and heres the responce:

@AbuTech Stay tuned for more updates regarding that product in the coming months. -jr

"coming months" sounds like there will be a long wait for this...!

Did you seriously expect anything more? Apple is not in the habit of letting their vendors in on their plans, so accessories are always late in coming (if at all). I wish it were not so but it has been such historically.

Well, if they let the accessoires manufactures know ahead, everyone would know within hours, and a big part of their marketing are the events where new products are introduced. I think we'll see some solutions soon.

Though i think the biggest problem is the resolution of 2560x1440 most adapters, cables etc. aren't designed for such capacity.

But why would you need such a high resolution? 1080p is more than ample for blu-ray movies and video games.

I don't understand why people keep bringing up this problem with the iMac's resolution. Whatever the blu-ray player, Xbox 360 or PS3 is outputting will be displayed - as such - on the screen. 780p, 1080p. Whatever.

I don't want 1440p. Yeah it would be great, but I'm more concerned with getting the 360 working on the damned iMac rather than clamouring for super-high definition (which it won't be able to display anyway, because from what I understand the 360 only goes up to 780p).

To be honest, I didnt have any expectations. Just posted the info as it was related to this thread...nothing more, nothing less.

It's confusing to me why nobody uses the apple provided solution: Gefen DVI to MDP adapter. As there is technically no difference in the video coming from HDMI and DVI.. Just get an HDMI to DVI adapter, plug it into this guy (both of which is sold at Apple stores already) and let it rock.

"You can connect any of the new Apple Cinema Displays with Mini DisplayPort to legacy DVI sources."

Because best picture quality is achieved at native resolution. If i have such a display, i want best picture quality, everything else would be a waste of money.

yes, but bluray players and 360's can't output the native rez of the iMac so if it is an external scaler or built-in scaler, the image will be scaled when coming from one of these sources, regardless. The question that still needs answered is, does the 27" iMac have a built in scaler for the input. My guess would be yes, but who knows, until someone has done it.

I would doubt very much that it has an internal scaler or upconverter. Just my guess, but don't expect Apple to put in anything that they don't have to.

Sorry but it won't work.
You need hdmi to mdp, not mdp to hdmi, that's different.

*shrugs*

You're probably right of course, but I have twenty quid spare, and Apple are adamant it will work so might as well give it a try. Besides they have promised to fully refund the item including postage if I don't have any luck. They are 100% sure it will work - apparently both HDMI and MDP are bi-directional.

If you have actually tried it and can verify without a shadow of doubt that it doesn't work because you've actually tried it, then I won't even bother trying it myself and I'll simply send it back.

Bloody hell!!! Nice find!

That does look like it would work. Nice resolution as well. Would it use up the whole 27 inch screen do you think or would it have a black border?

If the Dr Bott doesn't work I'll get one of these. Bloody expensive though.

There are 2 problems with this item. Both have been described in vivid detail through the thread.

1st... NO PASSIVE ADAPTER WILL EVER WORK for this application. Long story short, MDP sends video in data packets and everything else sends it as lines of pixels (very basic explanation as all the technical stuff has already been mentioned).

2nd... "The Dr. Bott Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter is designed to connect your Mini DisplayPort equipped Mac to your flat panel display or LCD-TV with HDMI-Port." right from the description. It's designed only for 1 way use MDP > HDMI (as mentioned in the previous post).

All that being said, the item combination in my previous post (post #257) will work as it's designed for just this purpose - DVI > MDP. Again, as there is NO TECHNICAL DIFFERENCE between DVI and HDMI, a simple adapter will work in addition to the Gefen box.

There will be a black border as it will display only the 1900x1080 pixels... but really? who cares... it'll be less than an inch around the edges.

Unfortunately for me, that Gefen product is not available in the United Kingdom.

Can you not oder it from the Apple store online as I've posted it? If not, why not have someone here buy it and mail it? I saw it at the Apple store on 5th Ave in NYC last night - It's very small, I can't imagine shipping would be terrible.

Heya genius,

I've read all your (and others') enlightening posts in this thread and I was aware that it probably wouldn't work (even if I partook in persistent, ecclesiastical prayers to Allah, the Blessed Mother Mary, Jehovah and the Buddha). However after speaking to the Apple Rep who insisted that it would work I thought I might as well give it a try seeing as he promised a full refund.

I rang Apple Store up earlier on today and told them that I was misled into believing that the Dr Bott product would serve my specific needs, hoping to execute a skilful SAS-style arm-twisting technique, painfully forcing Apple to provide the DVI>MDP (you have kindly linked) for free (or at reduced cost) for the inconvenience and distress I was viciously subjected to.

Unfortunately...

Afraid I cannot. I need a USA credit/debit card with the corresponding address in the USA. If you're willing to purchase the product and mail it to me I'd be very grateful.

If you are prepared I'll keep an ear open for possible currency fluctuations in my favour and send you a PM and I could transfer the cash to your bank? Obviously I must warn you I'm a dangerous street-figher/pro-boxer/MMA-champ/man-slaughterer who doesn't take kindly to betrayal.

Many thanks,

Sacha

Ever heard of Paypal? Much safer and easier than a bank transfer =P. Overall, I would have no issue buying one and mailing it out to you. Think on it and let me know.

Edit: I realize after reading my post that sarcasm doesn't come across so well in text. Anyway.. PayPal is a bit safer because I don't actually have to give you my bank account number/routing number/bank name etc. Like I said, think on it and let me know =)

I'm from the Rainy Isles my dear Genius. We toffs posses such incredibly heightened sarcastic sensory proficiency that it is an internationally accepted fact that with the benefit of a British education one can detect sarcasm from as great a distance as a thousand yards away using only one's (admittedly very large) penis.

I'll let you know any way, give me a couple of weeks. It's a bit tight over here with the whole banking crisis and all.

LOL. Yea dude, whatever. Just let me know.
Anyway, lets /unhighjack this thread =P.... Though I'm fairly certain my posts end the discussion! lol

Where does it say that gefen is compatible with imac 27"?

I think Atlona is better 'cause EXPLICITLY say the iMac is compatible...and its is USB powered...

So: How on earth nobody still got his hands on the (new) Atlona adapter??

The dvi to mdp Atlona converter did not work when I was testing it but I didn't buy the scaler that is supposed to make it work so I sold it... Look at my post earlier in this thread... Now the GEFEN sounds like it could be the solution... Its a great find and I never saw that when I was looking for a solution

Cheers

Yeah yeah great find....except there's no mention to the 27" iMac in the description on Apple Store....but great find....I don't know why, but great find.....it's just the same old Gefen adapter meant for the ACD Led 24", but great find.....GREAT FIND

ps: your experience with Atlona is about the OLD_NON_USB_POWERED_NON_DECLARED_COMPATIBLE_WITH_27"_IMAC Atlona adapter, am I right? Or with the NEW_USB-POWERED_EXPLICTLY_COMPATIBLE_with_imac_27 Atlona adapter?

So, I repeat my question: U.S.A. people, who are blessed with having in your yard companies like Atlona and co. (---> cheap shipping, fast delivery), why on earth nobody of you have got the NEW EXPLICITLY COMPATIBLE (you can recognize it because it's usb powered) Atlona Adapter? C'mon....this stuff has been out for like a month....I cannot belevie we still don't have a clue about target display mode with adapters....

The Apple 24" LED Display and the 27" iMac video in are essentially the SAME. Also, all the other things mentioned (with the exception of the new Altona thinymabober) are not specifically designed to feed INTO an Apple display while the Gefen IS DESIGNED TO ALLOW LEGACY (DVI) DEVICES to work with an Apple display.
