Does the new firmware update, with makeing the iMac to external screen work now with a PS3? So you dont have to use DrBott? But instead just a HDMI to mindisplay port cable?

Not possible. DisplayPort is a packet-driven protocol, and HDMI is not. If you have an HDMI input signal, you need some kind of active converter (eg, DrBott).

The only kind of compatibility that exists between the two, AFAIK, is that a DisplayPort cable can carry HDMI signals, but since the iMac itself doesn't understand HDMI, that doesn't help.

Hey

Baah. But thanks for it. Sadly Apple dont have a DrBott at the Danish applestore...

But thanks for the help.

Because DisplayPort is one step beyond HDMI, and should replace it - at least as far as computers are concerned. Not sure how long it will take TV makers to make the move from HDMI, tho.

What's so bad about HDMI? It's still a digital signal. What does Mini DisplayPort do that HDMI doesn't? Curious.

I got mine through Amazon's Marketplace, from a reseller named puremac-de. Received the package via UPS less than a week after ordering it.

Its just as much as the actual playstation 3 unit =\.

And still totally worth it depending on your situation. I personally live in Manhattan where space is a commodity AND I just moved from a furnished place (read: with a TV) to my own place that is unfurnished. I have the 27" iMac already and I have a projector... For general viewing the iMac screen is plenty big enough for me. So instead of spending the money (or, likely, more) on a TV.. I just get this and it's convenient!

Again, that's just my situation, though.

From what I've read, most PS3 games natively run at 720p, so I'm not sure you'll see a major difference with that new adapter.

You should definitely notice it with Blu-Ray though.

Yup. The only PS3 game that I've seen run 1:1 1080p is Full Auto 2. Even games like Skate 2 that say 1080p on the box, isn't really 1080p. It's just upscaled to 1080p. Same thing goes for Modern Warfare 2 (600p upscaled to 1080p).

You're very correct. However, the scaler will likely add in some antialiasing as well (though, it doesn't say so specifically), which would make even the 720p signal look significantly better.

And if it doesn't.. well, I do watch blu-rays too. So I'm ok with it =).

Guys,

Anyone with a 24 ACD, a dr bott´s video link and a xbox 360?

Can i play with my 360 on 24 ACD with this accessory?

Many thanks

Pedro

I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere in these forums that it didn't work.

At any rate, the DrBott adapter for the 24" ACD only takes DVI as input, not HDMI (unlike the adapter for 27" iMac). Maybe you can use a passive DVI to HDMI converter and chain it with an HDMI to MDP converter, but that's a big if.

After unchecking the 1080i and 1080p from the PS3's HDMI configuration, I still haven't got it to work.

When I press command-F2 on the iMac, I get a black screen, and, for a brief while, the output led on the Dr. Bott adapter lights up, then, after a while, just shuts down, and the iMac's display eventually returns to MacOS.

Could it be because I've also left the 576p resolution active on HDMI, even though the default has been set to 720p? Any other ideas? Right now, I'm considering returning the adapter while I still can ...

Hey

Have you tried to hold the power button on the PS3 down for some seconds, to it have said some BEEPS. That will reset the screen settings. Try then to put it to the DrBott :) (You maybe have to set the PS3 to a TV to configured it, before plugging it the the iMac.)

From what I have read there are 2 versions of the Dr. Bott converter, one which includes 1080p in the list of supported resolutions that it feeds to the target, and one which only supports 720p. Could it be that you have the 1080p version and the iMac shuts down the video when it sees this resolution while doing the hdmi handshake? Just a guess...

Nope, the Dr. Bott for iMac (the one that does DisplayPort) only works with 720p (actually, I think the iMac refuses 1080p input for upscaling reasons).

Also, I believe there's no HDMI handshake, since the adapter doesn't do it (unless I'm sorely mistaken), and the iMac certainly doesn't negotiate a HDMI handshake over DisplayPort.

Thanks for the input, though.

I said HDMI handshake when I really meant DisplayPort handshake, and yes the iMac must do this or it could not support both 720p and 1440p. Perhaps this is not the problem, but since so many people have had problems getting a PS3 to work it is at least a possibility.

I already tried the "double-beep" thingie, but with no luck. I guess I'll just try to connect it again to a TV, and leave only 720p as a supported mode, instead of both 720p and 576p, but that's a real PITA, since I don't have a HDTV at home (like most people who get a Dr Bott, I guess :p)

I would suggest calling Dr. Bott because I think the problem is in their handshake with the iMac. Explain your setup (including which model of Dr. Bott and cables you have) and see what they have to say. I have seen several others on this thread and elsewhere with this exact same issue.

I sent them an email on Monday evening (GMT+1), still waiting for an answer. I'll let you know my opinion on their support :D

1080p on imac

Hello!

Does anyone of you know if it is possible that our 27 inch imacs accept a 1080p input (like a blu ray from my ps3) in the future?

I know the problems about the rescale of our inches but, could apple ralease an update to make 1080p input work?

Is there any other good working alternative to use 720p leaving a side (¿?¿) the Dr Bott? (it is too expensive for me)

Thanks. And sorry for my english, i'm from spain,:D

I believe Atlona is releasing an adapter that supports 1080p this month, but it's more expensive than the current 720p adapters (around $100 more, I believe).

I believe the Dr. Bott is the cheapest one. Someone suggested using the Dr. Bott Apple Cinema Display adapter, which is 99€ instead of 129€, but I have no idea whether this works or not.

And no apology needed for your English, you aren't the only non-native speaker on these forums :p

what im looking for....

honestly, its expensive but the atlona solution seems like the way to go for anyone that wants to watch blu-ray on their imac
