After unchecking the 1080i and 1080p from the PS3's HDMI configuration, I still haven't got it to work.
When I press command-F2 on the iMac, I get a black screen, and, for a brief while, the output led on the Dr. Bott adapter lights up, then, after a while, just shuts down, and the iMac's display eventually returns to MacOS.
Could it be because I've also left the 576p resolution active on HDMI, even though the default has been set to 720p? Any other ideas? Right now, I'm considering returning the adapter while I still can ...
Alright, I finally got it to work. This would have been easier had there been some kind of documentation included with the Dr. Bott!
Here are the steps I followed :
- plug in the PS3 to a HDMI HDTV
- in Display Parameters, go to HDMI (this switches automatically the PS3 to HDMI output, so there's no way to do it using composite output, for instance), and choose to set it manually (the default choice being, amazingly, automatic)
- In the resolutions list, uncheck 1080i and 1080p, then select 720p and press the right arrow to validate your choice. The display should now switch from 576p to 720p
- You'll have to confirm within 30 seconds that the new resolution is ok
- You can now plug in the PS3 to the Dr. Bott adapter (which, for me, involved bringing it back home first)
- If all your cables are correctly connected, turn on the PS3, wait for about 5 seconds and press command-F2. The screen will turn black, and a couple seconds later you should see the PS3's display.
DO NOT restart the PS3 while holding the power button more than 5 seconds (ie, do not keep it pressed until you hear a second beep), as this seems to reset the HDMI output to automatic. I did that the first time after setting the output resolution, and never managed to get the display. I had to go through the whole mess again to get it to work.
I have to say, however, that the result is well worth it. Sitting at less than 1m/3ft from the screen, and it's smooth and beautiful.
