I believe Atlona is releasing an adapter that supports 1080p this month, but it's more expensive than the current 720p adapters (around $100 more, I believe).

I believe the Dr. Bott is the cheapest one. Someone suggested using the Dr. Bott Apple Cinema Display adapter, which is 99€ instead of 129€, but I have no idea whether this works or not.

And no apology needed for your English, you aren't the only non-native speaker on these forums :p
Hello.

EDIT: Wrong post.

But what is the name of the Atlona one?

Bleh, the Kanex product is just the Dr. Bott in a nice aluminum enclosure. I'm 90% sure that it caps at 720p just like the Dr. Bott, especially since it claims there is no scaling involved.

Hey guys, just browsing through your thread because i've been researching the same thing and think you have one or two facts wrong about the Kanex (vs. Dr. Bott).

The Kanex XD WILL support resolutions of up-to 1920x1200 (including 1920x1080). Check this video out if you haven't already seen it:

The website has been updated too:

Dr. Bott only supports up-to 720p, which is 1280x720

Oh and by the way, It's $129 cheaper than the atlona!!!

Coming out this month people!

p.s. Woo first post!!!

Hello

The kanex one looks more interesting then the alona one, as the ps3 only support full hd and not the resolution of the imac.

I can't see when the kanex becomes available?

Before they updated the website it had a release date of April 26th. Also, at MacWorld they also were announcing an April release so not long now!

This is the one to go for, its not mind bogglingly expensive and supports all the native resolutions you're going to need!

p.s. Woo second post!!! :p

After unchecking the 1080i and 1080p from the PS3's HDMI configuration, I still haven't got it to work.

When I press command-F2 on the iMac, I get a black screen, and, for a brief while, the output led on the Dr. Bott adapter lights up, then, after a while, just shuts down, and the iMac's display eventually returns to MacOS.

Could it be because I've also left the 576p resolution active on HDMI, even though the default has been set to 720p? Any other ideas? Right now, I'm considering returning the adapter while I still can ...

Alright, I finally got it to work. This would have been easier had there been some kind of documentation included with the Dr. Bott!

Here are the steps I followed :

- plug in the PS3 to a HDMI HDTV
- in Display Parameters, go to HDMI (this switches automatically the PS3 to HDMI output, so there's no way to do it using composite output, for instance), and choose to set it manually (the default choice being, amazingly, automatic)
- In the resolutions list, uncheck 1080i and 1080p, then select 720p and press the right arrow to validate your choice. The display should now switch from 576p to 720p
- You'll have to confirm within 30 seconds that the new resolution is ok
- You can now plug in the PS3 to the Dr. Bott adapter (which, for me, involved bringing it back home first)
- If all your cables are correctly connected, turn on the PS3, wait for about 5 seconds and press command-F2. The screen will turn black, and a couple seconds later you should see the PS3's display.

DO NOT restart the PS3 while holding the power button more than 5 seconds (ie, do not keep it pressed until you hear a second beep), as this seems to reset the HDMI output to automatic. I did that the first time after setting the output resolution, and never managed to get the display. I had to go through the whole mess again to get it to work.

I have to say, however, that the result is well worth it. Sitting at less than 1m/3ft from the screen, and it's smooth and beautiful.

Hey

Thanks boz0 now I just need to find out if I should get the kanex or drbott version.

It's a no brainer for me. Waiting a week or two for something that costs the same amount as the Dr. Bott but will support 1080p. Depends if you're in a hurry or not.

Hi chaps, I've got a little update on the Kanex XD release date. It was supposed to be released sometime this month but seemed to be taking a long time, so I e-mailed them and this was their reply -

"Unfortunately due to some production delays and further testing the Kanex XD is scheduled to begin shipping on 5/19/10"

Those who don't want to wait another month may want to buy the Dr Bott instead.

(Lyces, another spanish speaking!! from Madrid) :p

This is the new atlona adapter, AT-HD620, which rescale from 1080p to 1440p, it allows to hook up the native resolution of imac27":

http://www.atlona.com/ATLONA-HDMI-M...-DISPLAYPORT-SCALER-AND-SWITCHER-p-17947.html

I'll wait to see it running, I think it's better than dr.bott solution, but very expensive...

Thank you very much, i'll wait until this devices down their prices. I am happy to see that upsaclinhg 1080p to 1440p it's not impossible.

Well someone lie to you. The more expensive one you are talking about the atlona AT-HD620 will support 1440p (cause it includes an scaler).. the others only support 720p.. so you decide. you get what you pay for

People seem to be missing this part of the description from the manufacturer's website:

"Full screen HD playback of Blu-Ray DVD, Playstation 3, Xbox Elite, Direct TV, Dish Network or other components with HDMI output set at 720p."

This still does not enable 1080p or any other input higher than 720p when using HDMI input. Your HDMI device must still be set to 720p output for this adapter to work.

No different than the DR. Bott other than its exterior casing.

F2 to toggle screens?

Hi all,

Firstly big thanks for this thread! After reading everyones comments and seeing that DR Bott works, I took the plunge.

Received mine yesterday, all is well. Except I can't toggle between the xbox 360 and Mac OSX? It worked once while I held down APPLE+F2. I let go and the screen changed back to mac osx. I've not got it to work since.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong, I check all other combinations with the F2 key aswell as going to system prefs and making the Function keys standard etc.

Right now the only way I can get the imac to go back to mac osx is to unplug the hdmi cable from the Dr Bott box.

Hope someone can help me get this working.
Thank you in advanced

Regards

Thang

Definitely worth getting some clarification here. Thanks for pointing this out.

So the only viable purchase is the atlona for full hd. But does the atlona really throughput a 1080 signal and upscale it? Or does it take a 720 signal like the others do and upscale that? Show your work people! Let's try and put this thread to bed.

is there any lag at all which could kill an online fps match?
and the sound, how would i play sound if it's only the minidisplay?

and will it be able to take the xbox hd cables, the blue green and red ect, this is what you guys talk about right?

I just press command-F2 again to switch back to MacOS. Note that it usually takes a couple seconds to get your display back.

Did you actually get some Xbox360 input to display on your screen, or did it just go black for a brief while, then switch back to MacOS?

wow great, i just realised my xbox doesnt have an hdmi slot ftl...

so can i use the other cables instead? like the blue green red setup?

Atlona is soon to release the AT-HD620, an HDMI to Mini DisplayPort Converter capable of up-converting incoming video signals to dual-link resolutions up to 2560x1440. This revolutionary new converter solves compatibility issues that have been plaguing HDMI users looking to take advantage of the technologies offered in new Mini DisplayPort displays, such as the Apple iMac 27 and Apple 24” LED. The new AT-HD620 will scale any HDMI input to match native resolution of either display.

With the AT-HD620, a host of new image enhancing technologies are available to users looking to connect an HDMI source to an MDP display. The unit features an HDCP compliant HDMI input, as well as a Mini DisplayPort input that functions as a pass through for Mini DisplayPort sources. This unit can switch between the two inputs, allowing users to use both a connected Mini DisplayPort computer such as a MacBook Pro, MacPro, MacMini or any others as well as an HDMI source such as a PS3, AppleTV, Xbox 360, etc. The AT-HD620 will scale, or up-convert any resolution, including 1080P, to Dual-link resolutions up to 2560x1440. This converter supports 3-D motion video adaptive and 3-D de-interlacing to provide the best converted image possible while providing less than a single frame delay.

Im about to buy a converter for my Imac 27 inch does any one know which one I should buy

Theres the

http://kanexlive.com/products/kanexXd.html

http://www.drbott.net/product/9598-DGVL/

And some Atlona one..

Kanex says it support up to 1900 X 1200 Does that make it better????

Please let me I want to purchase one in the next few days

The Kanex and DRbott are exactly the same putting out a resolution of 720p not 1080p! The only thing that will do that is the Atlona one which costs $250 or something stupid. Im really pissed at apple making me pay another £90 to hook my PS3 and its not even going to be 720p, what a joke!

Atlona has 2 converters, one AT-DP200HD which can support resolutions up to 720 on iMac 27" just like kanex or DR. Bott; however with additional advantage that it is USB powered. Currently available for shipping.

Another model AT-HD620 is able to support full resolution of iMac 27" and 24" LED because it has a built in scaler. The output of the scaler could be up to 2560x1440 (which is the maximum and native resolution of the iMac 27"). That box is more money because it has a scaler.
The AT-HD620 also has a mini DisplayPort input which is pass-though, in case if user wants to connect a laptop to the iMac 27 or 24" LED and not disconnect wires each time. They can switch between HDMI and Mini DisplayPort on the HD620
