I've said it before, but I really want to see gen 4 m.2 slots added to the iMac. Sure, a built in SSD that is tied to T2 is a given, but give users the option to add drives after purchase extend the life. They could easily fit in the back along with the RAM, with tool-less connectors. Especially if the chassis is going to look more like the XDR than the current lineup.

🤞🤞🤞

I’ll gladly fork that over if the bezels are gone.

Not that I have a dog in the fight, since I just got a 2019 iMac and plan on keeping it a good 5-10 years, but I'm not sure if no bezels would look great, but thin bezels (0.25" ?) would definitely look nice.

The big question is if this iMac will also have an Arm chipset. Is there a point in making this model Intel now that we know Arm going across the board as soon as 2021?

If the claims that it will be SSD only are true, then yes it will have an ARM CPU in it in the form of the T2. However, the main CPU will still be Intel for this launch.

Apple is clearly going ARM and they'll probably transition the laptops first. Desktops ( top spec iMac and iMac Pro ) require more CPU power and many of those users want their Windows access too, so it's possible their transition could be delayed. With technology like bitcode ( LLVM's intermediate code ), Apple can easily rebuild their frameworks for ARM and still leave the Intel frameworks in the macOS release. This should give current Intel Macs lots of life. The current tech also enables a reasonable upgrade path for software developers without the pain we saw going from PPC to Intel.

Saying it another way: just because Apple moves to ARM doesn't mean current machines are automatically obsolete/EOL in a few years. What Apple actually implements is unknown but the technology is available.

Yeah, if these rumors are true it probably means the Intel iMac will be moved to ARM last (or at least next-to-last, since Apple is comfy doing half-decades or more between Mac Pro upgrades).

I think the move from Intel to ARM deserves a physical form factor change to go along with it, to signify a wholesale change in the machine... the MBPs and laptops have somewhat stagnated except for keyboards, and are pretty much ready for this processor transition and design change. If they're going to turn the iMac into an iPad Pro on a stalk or whatever, that tells me it has at least a couple of years of life before it gets transmogrified into some new ARM desktop all-in-one.

It’s funny because I need an external keyboard and mouse for my MacBook Pro desk setup, but I‘d rather potentially buy a new iMac instead of spending $200 on a Magic Mouse/Keyboard. Still, it might be better to hold onto my MacBook Pro and wait for the transition to ARM.

New bezels and everything are great....but here's the real question: Will this thing finally support target-display-mode again? Or, once the internals are out of date, will it become another giant paper-weight?

You could probably open one up and stick a Rasberry Pi or something inside to turn it into a usable display.

Man I just got a 2019 iMac in November for a REALLY good price. My 2010 was on the verge of being 10 years old and I was tired of waiting for the redesign.

It’s going to be tempting to sell my 2019 and just buy the new.

Well, I'll just say the new one is going to really have to blow me out of the water for me to do that. And for the record, thin bezels in and of themselsves won't budge me in the least. A 32" display would budge me a bit, but it's going to have to be that and a few other big things on that order for me to sell my 2019. I don't think that's going to happen (i.e. THAT many big changes), but who knows. Will be exciting to see in any case.

Touchscreen.
Apple Pencil.
Surface Studio like hinge.
The whole iOS app on Mac points to this. I am sure they be integrating the MacOS and iOS eventually. iPads with mouse and Trackpad and Mac’s with touchscreens.

A 27” iMac touchscreen / Pen screen I’d buy it in a heart beat.

There was a patent for a pencil enabled trackpad.

With WWDC less than two weeks away, a number of MacRumors readers have noticed that shipping estimates for Apple's stock 27-inch iMac configurations are now listed as after the June 22 WWDC kickoff, leading some to believe that this is evidence of an iMac update coming at the keynote.

While there are indeed rumors of an imminent significant update for the iMac, perhaps at WWDC, the shipping estimates are not a reliable indicator of this. Apple has been quoting extended shipping estimates on both stock and build-to-order configurations of the 27-inch iMac for over a month, so current quotes are nothing new and they slip back roughly day-by-day as time passes.

It's not entirely clear why shipping estimates initially slipped, as it happened while the global health crisis was affecting supply and manufacturing chains around the world. Certain component shortages could easily have slowed Apple's ability to produce machines, but the company may also be intentionally reducing inventories ahead of new models and only building what's necessary to fulfill orders.

Notably, the 21.5-inch iMac is not seeing extended shipping estimates at the present time as its availability has generally held up better than for its larger sibling.

As noted in our Buyer's Guide, the iMac is definitely due for an update, and we've been hearing significant rumors about an imminent update. Previously reliable leaker CoinX said in March that an iMac update was coming "soon," while an April rumor claimed a new low-cost 23-inch iMac is coming in the second half of the year.

Mark Gurman said in late April that a "substantial" iMac update with a possible redesign would be coming later in the year, and just yesterday, Sonny Dickson claimed that a redesigned iMac with "iPad Pro design language" will be coming at WWDC.

Riddle me this: Why NO iMacs in stock. Yes- the 21in is shipping much faster. In Northern California the Apple website shows NO 21in (nor 27) in stock but you can get one tomorrow (21 in). They are stocking ZERO in stores. Drop by a Costco and their Apple station and you will see OUT of Stock signs for all their iMacs. Just shipping delays Because of the pandemic?

Totally worth it, especially because of going SSD. However, you can still return it back within 15 days of delivery date. I got an iMac 2019 too, 8-core 27” one and it’s a blast. I wouldn’t mind keeping it if I had no choice, but the new ones could bring a lot of goodness that might be worth it, even if price are bumped a tiny bit.

Uh, where are you getting a new 2019 iMac with those specs for $1835 when it retails for $2600 with those specs? Even with the education discount it's still $2369. Did you mean refurbished?

CDW - on their BSTOCK site. It was listed as NEW (probably a customer return or cancelled order).

30% off is pretty nice! I'm a sucker and paid full price from Apple (mine's the 8-core and Vega 48 and I upgraded to 64 GB of OWC ram) but it's still worth it :)
