Whats the point in the 8 gig

Whats the point in the 8 gig when you can get so much more capacity for only £20 more?!
Seems fairly bizarre really, you'd have to really like little black things to bother surely!

anyone getting one care to explain your rationale?

This is very simple to answer.

I want a solid state player that is small and lightweight and don't need the larger capacity of the regular iPod, nor do I want to lug around such a huge iPod -- relatively speaking.

I can fit a large chunk of my 20 GB library onto an 8 GB iPod, certainly more than I'd listen to for a week or so.
I'd like to have 24 hours of battery life.
I'd like to go running with it (hence flash memory).
I'd like to get a Nike + thang at some point to motivate my lazy ass.
I'd like to be able to fit it in my sexy lady jeans without looking like I've got a small child stuffed in them. 😛

I know where you're coming from, but I just sold my 20 GB 4G iPod to pay for this, because I never used the full capacity and it was bigger and heavier than I'd prefer. I'll never watch videos on my new one. It'll be very rare if I look at photos on it. I'll never play games on it.

So, although I do like to get the best value out of things, I feel like I am with this, because I'm getting more stuff I want (size, no hard drive, better battery etc) for a cheaper price. Which is a good thing. 🙂

Google for "thread 500" and click the top match--always hilarious 🙂

If the new nanos played games and videos (I know--really small) I'd HAVE to buy one. So I'm glad they don't 🙂

The case combines the best of the Mini and Nano--all good.

So why are there no nano games? Just because the screen is so small?

You can't be serious. Have you ever exercised? I personally exercise 5 times a week and I love listening to music when I do. The nano is so small that I can easily put it in any pocket and not even notice it. A 5G Ipod is a different story. That thing would constantly hit your leg and be annoying to work out with.

There is something to be said for the physical size of devices (especially PORTABLE devices), not just how much music or content it can hold. I also already have one big device- a Blackberry that I carry everyday. I don't need two things that size.

I just bought one of the silver ones and I really like it. It feels just like a mini to touch and the packaging reminds me of the sort of boxes you got Times watches in. It's syncing up all my music as I type 🙂

This is what the iPod nano always should have been: a radically slimmer iPod mini.

Love the colors. Love the new (old) shape. Love the new (old) aluminum scratch-free design.

I want one. 😉

Couldn't have said it better myself! The ipod mini design is quite simply the best ipod design (IMHO). 😀

I will be buying a 4GB silver one very very soon...😛

Picturreeeeeeeeeeeeess!😀

I would really like to see what the difference in size between the new nanos and old nanos is. if it really is 52% smaller, which doesn't look it from the picture, I will definitely consider picking one up. has anyone seen any side by side pictures of the new and old nano?

Sorry but my desk is a right state today and I'm not going to embarrass myself by showing it to the web. However, you'll be glad to hear that it came with two "nano" Apple stickers 🙂

The package is 52% smaller.

The new Nano just a fraction thinner.

The new ones are ever so slightly thinner and have rounded edges like a mini. I put mine up against my partners 1st gen (in it's rather scratched case) so you could see.

I changed my mind on the packaging pic too. When the iPod's in there it's like a little glass coffin 🙂

wow, what is the point of even advertising a smaller box, the nano box was miniscule as it is. It just makes you wonder what they have cut out of the old box to make this box smaller, maybe they make you buy the dock and ipod-> usb cable, and the ipod plug all seperately.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Also when I bought it at the store the sales clerk asked me if I downloaded the Itunes software. I said yea, and he said when? I told him I downloaded Itunes 7.0 last night. He then said you're all set. It then occured to me that the packaging is way too small to fit a CD. They must be giving the Itunes software CDs to people who don't seem to be too tech savvy.

Well the looks and the battery life just led me to put in my order for a 2GB silver model 🙂

I can't wait for this thing to arrive and meet it's substantially larger sibling, (powerbook).

My only worry is that it won't work well in my nike+ armband, does anyone know if it does?

Anyhows, here's to the waiting game...

Nice pictures!

I love it. Personally, I prefer the previous nano box, but if this is helping the environment then I'm happy!

does anyone know exactly how much thinner the new nanos are? im sure it is just a few centimeters, if not millimeters but i am still curious.

I just saw one at the apple store today... The nano's are still too small lol. Here's a toast to the mini, apple's best non-full size iPod ever.

Got my Black nano by UPS this morning, it is really really nice. Here are two pics (I don't think there have been any user black nano pictures so far):

If you would like any more just ask,

Frankie

I have been wondering what the Black Aluminum would look like. Looks great!

This new generation nano represents an ocean of improvement over its predecessor, but I do agree that the mini stands alone as the best in the field. I will be getting one of these new nanos (likely green or blue) simply because the marketplace dictates such things. Personally, I never had a burning need for a small color screen ... the mini's monochrome screen was fine in every respect.

Personally I'm getting tired of Apple and their color choices. You have to pay more for black? What if you want 8 GB but you don't want black? What then? I'm not liking the approach Apple is taking on the color choices of their products.

I guess that if they hand't released black model at all, everybody would be happy. Same thing with MacBooks. Had Apple only released the two white models, no-one would have complained. But when the announced a pricier third moder, the BlackBook, the whining started.

Don't want to pay extra? Then don't.

And some of us are eternally grateful for that... 🙂

Get the accessory for extra functions... 🙄

How would the built-in tuner make the iPod worse? Don't want to use it? Then don't. And what if you want a tuner AND some other missing feature? Can you stack accessories to the iPod? Would it look nice?

That said, I AM planning to get that 80GB iPod 🙂. Although that Black Nano looks gorgerous as well....
