Apple purposely wanted to keep the same designs when they transitioned from ppc to intel in order to make the experience feel seamless to the end user. I have no proof of this, it's just what I assumed because it makes so much sense.

Um free is for a limited time only and you have to buy a $1000+ computer. Anyone who buys a $1000+ Mac should get a break on an iPod too. There is a reason why there is a whole education section on the Apple Online Store. Without students support, the iPod wouldn't be anywhere near the cultural icon that it is. Guess what, most students don't have a set income but their patronage is very important to Apple and iPods in general. And I'm 25, Mommy and Daddy haven't payed for me for a long time. So now who is trolling. (Hint: the guy who puts offensive posts up with big upper cased red letters)

Duh. I knew you weren't rich because you're a student and because you're complaining about money. That's why I said "you sound like a spoiled brat," not "you are a spoiled brat." And get over yourself, Apple owes you nothing. If you don't like their products or their pricing, then don't buy their stuff. It's as simple as that. I won't be replying again, I'm done with this conversation.

Hye guy if you are a registered student and go to anywell known school you get a discount on ipods year round as well as any other apple product.

So... will that trick of making a 8GB 1G nano work with these....

remember... open up a nano and u'll see a free slot. Cause, I could go for a 12GB Green..... 16GB black would be ok... but green... color of envy... color of desire... color of money....

12GB Green would be highly desired!

That was the whole point of the initial complaint. I actually came to the defense of forum member who was complaining about no student discounts and someone told them to "get a grip" for expecting a student discount.

If you log into an Apple edu site you will notice that there is no edu discount on any of the new models of iPods. It seem to me that Apple wouldn't want to alienate a market as important to iPods as students but I guess I was wrong. Cool isn't cool if the MTV crowd doesn't rubber stamp it.

gapless playback?

Is the gapless playback only a feature of the full size pod or does it carry over to the nano too?

I believe that the Nanos can play gapless. I looked on the tech specs page on Apple's site but i don't see it. I could be wrong but i'm pretty sure that the Nanos can play gapless.

As for my opinion on the nanos...

I dislike them. I wasn't fond of the Mini asthetics wise. Durable, for sure. But I just don't find them as nice to look at, and now that the Nanos are the same tacky colors, it's back to the ugliness. I know people were buying up the Minis, I'm just personally not a fan of the styling... If you all want to buy them up go ahead, just count me out 😛

Your not paying a premium for the color, you get 8GB. What sucks is you can't get 8GB in colors, lame move on Apple's part with no reason behind it.

I agree with you on the color restriction for the 8GB models; I was really hoping for total color choice across the board when I first saw the updated store picture (missed the keynote). Especially with the new SanDisk 8GB players, I thought Apple might offer a bit more choice on a high end model to entice more people (I suppose I can live with black, though; at least it's not vomit colored or something 🙄 )

Sadly I don't think the 1G nanos will get them. Remember when the video and nano came out, with the stopclock, security lock, etc? The previous iPods didn't get an update 🙁.
There was an iPod update on my 5G today, but it was only for games and bug fixes🙁

Did nobody not notice that the Nano ad shows the clickwheel glowing along with the screen? Looking at photos of the new Nano kind of kicks down that prospect, but it's a little of a let down when you realize the click wheel does not glow like in the ad.

It would be sweet though. 🙄

I noticed. I too was hoping that it glowed like in the ad.

Nothing indicates that it would.

I'm glad I waited. Eye-ballin' a silver one myself.

the styling is a matter of personal preference...i like the white/black lucite look but for durability the aluminum will work great. no real need for a cover/case.

however, that's certainly not the main reason to spring for the new nanos (or is it?)...8GB flash drive...gapless playback...24hr. battery...ummm, them's some pretty good specs in favor of the new nanos. gapless playback...yummy.

p.s. when will amazon start selling 'em? free shipping and no tax looks really good right now since my edu discount is no more.

Whilst the new Nano's are nice as are the new video ipods I don't see any compelling reason at the minute for me to go and spend some $$$.

I bought my ipod in January (at a substantially reduced price compared to full UK retail when I was in Japan) and it's working a charm. I didn't fall foul of the scratching/screen problems because I was careful enough to buy adhesive screen protector/case. Yeah it might not look as cool inside a rubber enclosure but it sure as hell isn't gonna break.

My problem with the new Nano's is that there just doesnt seem anything that would compell me to upgrade now a MUST HAVE feature. Most certainly I'll upgrade when either a) Ipod has an accident or b) the battery fails as considering a battery service is half the cost of a new 2GB nano it doesnt seem wortwhile.

So yeah...nice...but my wallet stays shut till something happens to my current Nano. Sorry Apple 🙁

I agree that Apple needs to come up with some new designs for their hardware. I think the new nanos are a perfect combination of the nano (slim design, flash memory) and the mini (seemless casing, scratch proof) but the other products seem to be long in the tooth. The MacBook Pro/PowerBook has looked basically the same since it was debuted with a G4 processor (what was that, 2002?). The MacBook/iBook got a somewhat update look with the latest release, but kind of took a step backwards IMO.

However, with all of that said, 99% of us do not work for Apple and do not know how to design like they do. Where do you go with the current MBP? I would love to see an anodized black version but that still does not give us much of a difference at all. I am interested in seeing new products. I was dissapointed when they released the new MacPro's in the same encolusers. An extra optical slot and moving the power chord to the top of the tower does not count as a redesign.

Oh c'mon!! Why did the designers at apple pay education for?? Really?!!

Ok... I studied design myself(although a cinematographer now 😉 ), and I know how hard it is to keep a sleek, clean, "ahead of it´s time" look and feel. But please!! 1yr Retro style?? Are they using recycled minis or something??

Really guys... This is not a complaint but Steve "Marketing Master" Jobs was not happy on this one... I know alot of people love the minis, and I also know that they will sell millions of "retro" nanos... but in a market POV it´s really bad to "go back in time" with design and say it´s brand new. And one last note about them: There´s millions of colors on the pallete... why use the same ones?? Again: are they recycled?? Cause if they are, I´ll buy a couple, just for the sake of "saving the world".

the Mac Pros for example... they could´ve done the cases with different finish or something.. but keeping the same design saved them millions of cash...

BUT WAIT!! 😛

Ok... let´s get a little optimistic here:
Steve told us all last year, that this (2006) was going the be the "year of transition". So it´s quite dumb of us to expect big redesigns, and/or mint new technologies...

That makes me think that the design team is REALLY focusing on applying those new patent technologies on a brand new line of products hard/software. And what happens is:
Marketing Director - Time for new yearlly ipods!!
Design Chief Exec. - Do we still have some Mini aluminum on stock?
Chief Hardware Engineer - Yes plenty for a couple of million.
Design Chief Exec. - Okay, so let´s just wrap up our current stock of nanos with it, and get the hell out of here.
Marketing Director - Yes, cof cof, sir.

😉 These are just my two cents... 😛

Conclusion: Big redesigns -> 2007-2008

I was so wanting an upgraded Mini when Apple introduced the Nano. I disliked the new form and materials. But the new Nano is everything I wished for. Well almost. Why did they give us only black for the 8gig? This is the premium model. I want silver damn it!!! But otherwise full marks from me. Just placed my order for a Shuffle......awesome job Apple. One of the best introduction days I can remember. The new iTV is the icing on the cake. Bravo😀

The new nano is disappointing on its look. I prefer if they don't make any change from the old model. simply a nano size mini......

so when does amazon start selling these? with no education discount now, it makes sense to buy from amazon and free shipping/no tax.

i'm very happy with the new lineup

i went for the silver 4gb mini and pre-ordered a shuffle 😀

these nano's are gonna sell like hotcakes😎

Are you insane or just trolling? You're complaining because the FREE iPod that Apple is giving to you for FREE is the previous version that was just updated today, even though you're getting it for FREE!!! For you to complain about this makes YOU the rude one. You sound like a spoiled brat whining and complaining because the porche mummy and dada bought you for christmas is black instead of red. There's just no pleasing some people. 🙄

RELAX dude!

Not everyone get one for free! It's only in US!
I can only get a discount on the old model! And no discount at all for the new.

Just wondering, does the aluminum material prevent them from manufacturing white models? I prefer white over all the available colours, and it'll prolly go better with my MacBook.

These new nanos are awesome! I'd get one if I didnt have my 60 gig 5G 😀

I like black and silver models most of all. I didnt like black 1G nanos(scratches and stuff), but this alu black is great! 🙂

As much as I love them, all of Apple's designs are getting old. The Macbook (nee iBook) has looked the same (minus a few paint jobs) for over 5 years; the current iMac design harkens back to the eMac (yes, I know, its flatter, what an innovation...wheee), which in turn was highly derivative of the original iMac. The MacBook Pro is just an AluPB, which in turn was merely a revision of the original Titanium G4. Now, the "new" iPod nano is nothing more than a iPod mini that went on a diet, and the full iPod, although much sleeker than its predecessors, is still essentially the same design as the iPod that came out in 2001. And the story goes on: the Mac Pro, a warmed over PowerMac G5; the Airport/Airport extreme, essentially unchanged since its release; the Airport Express, a power adapter with flashing lights; the iSight, unchanged since its release; the Mighty Mouse, same design as the Apple Pro Mouse, etc. Essentially, the only new designs in the last three years have been: the Mac mini, the iPod shuffle, and the Cinema Displays, none of which could be considered to be attention-getters. Even the new, unreleased "iTV" is copying the Mac mini design. Not too impressive for a company which claims high design as a main benefit. Where is the new cube? the iMac (& G4)? the tiBook? There is nothing fresh or innovative about their current lineup, nothing exciting or innovative.Instead, its all inoffensively sterile, to my eyes; walking into an Apple store has become similar to walking into IKEA, nothing unexpected, just clean lines. It's like they've become artistically constipated. Or is this just what we get for Apple's new push on "competitive prices"?

In my opinion, its time for some fresh blood, someone with a new vision. And yes, I'm looking squarely at you, Steve and Jonathan. I want to be excited again, and not just by the "guts" of the computer. I, for one, miss the Macworlds of 5 years ago...

Agreed, sadly. My first reaction to the new mini is... I mean nano is... the mini is not old enough to be retro yet! Slipping in an intermediary (the origional nano, which itself was a throwback to the origional ipod) in the line of the shrinking mini does not make it revolutionary, but in fact, makes it not even keep pace with being evolutionary! While I know that many will argue that the reason is that today's designs are perfect, and also that, particularly with laptops, color and texture and corners are the only things you can play with, that's not enough. Apple has, previously, been amazing, shocking us and making us fall in love in one move. But it's been a good long while before we've been shocked at all, and it's hard to stay in love this long.

Remember the recent redesign that has swept across BMW's lineup? The awful trunk on the 5 series, the controversy, the debate? And how tired Mercedes looked in comparison, how bland? But it wasn't a sure thing, the new beamers were risky, right? I, for one, thought that the previous generation was about as close to visually perfect as any car since a dusenberg, and hated the redesign. But.... it's grown on me, and I'm thuroughly fond of the new theme, and the old looks tired to me (in another 15 years it'll look great, no doubt).

That's what apple needs. But now they're like mercedes- beautiful, for sure, but also boring. Same with the OS! They have the capability to pull off risky designs, for sure. They would definately be a BMW rather than a GM if the decided to actually design something. But no, they can't even come up with a '07 toyota camry's worth of design.

So I'm hoping that they've been doing this strategically, to manage their risks a bit while things like the intel switch, introduction of the nano (with, remember, less memory for more money), have been providing as much risk as they can take. The important thing is, now that they're transitioned, and now that they don't have to work to sell ipods, they've got to take those risks, and do that work, or else somebody else will. If your not moving forward, your falling behind.

Where is Apple still selling iPods that qualify for the back-to-school Mac+iPod deal? I can't find anything on the Apple Online Store (Switzerland) site...

I was wondering the same thing. A white aluminium one with a white clickwheel would look good, I think. The silver's almost there, but if it was just all white that would be great. It's going to be strange to have a white iBook, white leads, white mouse, and then an all-black iPod.

A rough and ready Photoshop job of a white one:

I think it would look very smart indeed.

Glad someone else said this!

I'm confused though. I was told on the phone the old nano would cost me £155. Take off the £100 rebate and it would cost me £55. Went and bought my 24" iMac online and took the iPod offer and it cost £129. So i am hoping the rebate is still £100 and it will only end up costing me £29 😀
