I was a bit bummed that there was no GPS in the touch since I figured that would be the easiest to implement.

Agreed. I was hoping for more 'phone' stuff, or to play the touch as a real mobile computer and not an ipod. instead they advertised it as a game console. zzzzzzzz. This is so close to just being a portable mac, and they didn't go there.

yes, for shareholders

been waiting on new macbook/pro updates for months and months and still nothing.

gotta be honest, this was the worst apple event ever imo.

you know why? because it was a fake event in terms of innovation but a pure corporate marketing idea - catering to worried shareholders b/c Steve Job's latest health rumors.

The 1st gen is 0.31 in thick, the 2nd gen is 0.33 in thick... go figure

Yeah, calling it the thinner than the last seems deceptive.

I will say that the new iPhone feels not only thinner but more comfortable to hold than the original, and it is also slightly thicker at the thickest point. I'm sure the new Touch will be same way, so it's still an improvement.

yea that may have something to do with it.

also, a lot of colleges start at the end of September. i think they are deliberately delaying the launch of the new laptops just to push old/unwanted inventory onto students.

i love apple and everything but cmon...

The mic and volume controls on the new $29 earbuds seem to only work for the new iPod Touch 2nd Gen. (per apples online store) WHAT? I want a mic and volume controls for my 1st gen iPod Touch!!

Well that figures! Not buying another touch! I hate these freaking gimmicks!

I will Not go ahead and spend another $79 to get these buds! Confirmed just now that the Control capsule for volume and mic will not work on 1st Gen touch!

Getting tired of these incremental upgrades fast!

Wow, so many people complaining about the features the Touch is missing. No 64 gb, no camera, no gps, blablabla. This is first and foremost a music player, how much extras can you expect to fit in this thin piece of hardware??

Multi-apps

Can you run multiple aps at a time. For example, can i be listening to music, have my AIM client open while playing a game? Thanks

That's correct. I imagine a 64GB will come soon, just as the original 32GB was announced later.

Are we absolutely sure that the headphones with remote and mic are bundled?

Also, do we know for sure if the mic will work with the Touch? I assume so, but confirmation would be nice.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of the Touch, but Apple needs to be held to a higher standard if they want all the limelight. Deliver to the consumer what they want. I've been reading for a while now about people wanting more memory and now that the announcements come out the media and bloggers choose to overlook it. To me this is just another sign of Apple going the way of Google - down down down.

What Apple have done with the iPod Touch is to stand up and say we are now ready to compete as a gaming platform, and what's more we are changing the whole sales/delivery model by making the entry level slightly dearer than Nintendo DS and PSP but making the games a fraction of the price - so once you've bought the thing the games cost peanuts - there'll be no hesitation forking out £5.99 to download a title and £24.99 will now seem so over priced so as to be ridiculous. As a gaming device the Touch has all it needs and more, and is set to redefine the market. Maybe many will stand by Nintendo and rightly so, but Sony is going to lose a lot (more) of its gamers.

I waited for 2 years before I finally made a decision to replace my broke iPod classic. I really wanted to get a touch but the price was just too much, when the 32GB one came out I was oh so close to getting one.

I wanted to wait until this event before finally replacing it but when I saw the rumors abuot its new "features" I said screw it and bought an iPhone. Glad I did. The Touch could be really great but now it's just a gimp iPhone and still costs more.

Volume control is nice but there's no pause control? That would be more important to me. I'm even more glad now that I got my free Touch in the summer promotion; I don't see anything here to get excited about.

iPod Touch 2g is 5 grams lighter than the 1g Touch, but is .5mm thicker.

Why do they keep saying they new iPhone and new Touch is thinner than last years? Tapered edges does not equal thinner in my book.

.5mm is nothing to get upset over though, i'm just arguing on technicalities.

Being lighter is more important to me than being thinner. People who carry items in their pockets such as myself always appreciate our everyday items getting lighter and more less noticeable in ones pocket.

So...

So, is my DS better? Probably. I'm not such a fan of Renaissance device only because they can't focus on one aspect. Can't make a good portable media center and also have it be a good gaming device. Or maybe you can.

Well to begin with, I think a lot of people rightly didn't expect much from the update. The Nano update was definitely more interesting.

What we got was a small incremental update which they have to do to keep the line fresh. Maybe they just weren't ready with the bigger updates. Who knows. All it means is that some people will sit on their money for a bit longer if this doesn't fit their needs.

I have to say though that the Genius stuff is pretty cool, not as much the one that recommends what else to buy from iTunes, but the pandora aspect of it. I would be using that a lot to create playlists but also to find new music.

That's marketing-think for you. According to those folks, if it's thinner at its thinnest point they get to make that claim. I think they did something similar with the Macbook Air, comparing it to other notebooks.
