There is a mic for the 2nd gen ipod touch
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA850#overview

But I am going to hold-off buying a new one until they stretch the screen.

What is annoying about those new earbuds is the fact the mic and controls ONLY WORK on the new iPod touch, iPod nano, and the refreshed iPod classic. This leaves out the iPhones from the 1st and 2nd generations!!

Of course !! Look what they did with the speaker. Any moron would have put speaker and camera with the first generation. They are just milking people for money. Speaker today, camera in Novemeber.

Glad my iPod Touch was free, otherwise i'd have to wait till Christmas time when the thing comes with a camera.

As for gaming on this thing, its horrible IMO. I removed all the games I downloaded.

im glad it didnt have gps or a camera... i wanted an ipod that could also play videos. the touch is best for that..

if i want to take photos i use my camera. if i want to use gps i use my tomtom or my garmin for in the woods.. and if i need to use the phone i use my cell..

folks, its an ipod, which is a media player... so im glad it didnt come with all this rubbish some of you wanted..

the only thing nicer would have been 64gb.. otherwise its perfect in my eyes..

I want to pick up one of the In Ear Buds. Any idea if they'll work for volume control on the iPhone? The current earbuds for the iPhone only had track change and play/pause, no volume.

If this was an "iPod event" then what was the iPhone doing there? I know the iPhone can play music, but so can my Mac. If you can justify the iPhone announcements, then a Mac-related one could have been expected reasonably too.

iTunes 8?

No because the Mac updates will be released quietly in the middle of the night with little to no fanfare whatsoever and, if recent history is any guide, they're largely going to suck.

Right, just like the MacBook Air. A true lack of innovation from Apple.

Screw it. Apple should just slap a "Made for iPod" sticker on the Mac and be honest about it. No updates for the Mini in almost a year. The updates to the iMac lately have been lackluster and the displays...? And how about that Mac-free keynote at WWDC? I'm not sure what Apple's thinking, but this nonstop focus on iPods and iPhone is starting to get on my nerves.

As I've said before, if Apple can't update the Macs in a timely manner, they should introduce regular price drops so it at least doesn't feel like their computer customers are getting the short end of the deal. I don't think that's unreasonable at all.

Better yet, they should just give you free computers. *That's* a smart business model.

Seriously, personally I don't have an iPhone, and I have just a 2g Nano, but I don't fault Apple for pushing this technology. Clearly a lot of people really like it.

And while I know it's unpopular around here, I *love* my MBA.

With dark colored ipods and nanos now available it would be cool if they offered the new headphones in black as well.

well that's what the iphone deserves for :apple: not giving the touch camera or gps :D

What @ the iPod Touch Price?

Apple released the new iPod Touch today at their media event.
- $229 for 8GB, $299 for 16GB, $399 for 32GB

:apple:In US store it 299,299 and 399 USD
But Japan and Australia store had different pricing for all 3.
:apple:In Japan its almost 259,333,445 USD
:apple:In Oz its 267,340,445 USD
I don't understand y its 50$ costly ?

nice to see that the back is still steel: that secures the headphone jack from being mauled by the headphone plug.

as well: new phones look to be high-tec and with a mic for a very good price. will they be good? no idea but for 79$ and dual microarmatures, not a bad price at all. 23 ohm will cause some problems (probably) for bass roll off but much better than some others.

probably people will discover hiss finally from an ipod (a person who has never had nice phones that is) if they upgrade from the usual whites to these. hope that the hiss level has gone down though it was never really that bad.

Well considering that nintendo has sold almost 78M DSs to date they probably aren't thinking too much about the Touch. My guess it that they are looking at the touch and thinking they already did that a long time ago and are looking at the next revolutionary thing they can do.

Agreed, Nintendo has nothing to worry about. If anyone should worry it's Sony. The iPod Touch is a great competitor for the PSP.

Meh

Price are just "OK" considering the new features. But no GPS and no Bluetooth is a serious bummer. Having the Nike+ rcvr built-in sounds good but isn't the Touch just too bulky for running? When will they (Apple AND Nike) wake up and offer GPS for Nike+?!

if people cant run with the touch, they have a serious problem.

its not that its too big, its that some people prefer having something nano sized, its a choice of if its too big for you, not it being too big

i run with mine all the time.

stop the complaining

I really miss the good old days of macrumors. When users posted helpful insights and knowledge.

I don't get the nike thing. They went out of their way to not install something like bluetooth, but instead installed something they will make 100% of buyers spend money on, but maybe a few % will use? Doesn't make sense. I wonder if the nike thing IS bluetooth, but highly disabled? We will see. And the reason the older ipods can't work with the new mic headphones is because the plug is physically different. This isn't just some software update, but a physical change to the ipod that allows it to pick up the extra mic section on the headphone plug and hardware to allow it to record.

Question. What is the point for the microphone, can we use those mic headphones to record say, college lectures and save it to the device?

Good time to buy a Macbook ?

I was waiting with slim hopes that there might be a Aluminum Macbook announcement. I'm planning to buy a Macbook on Edu discount along with the new iPod Touch under "Back to School" promotion so that I can get the iPod Touch 8GB for free along with the Mac for about $999. Now it seems like the new Macbook might not be here until the holidays... Even if that's the case, perhaps the "Back to School" promotion won't be there...
Any suggestions?

That 32GB now seems feasible. I don't know about that shiny silver backing, but I guess it would be in a sick wicked silicone case either way.

May grab that 32 for traveling and as my Apple PDA since the iPhone is still too much of a rip off.

P.S. Get over that d@mn Macbook, get the current one which isn't bad (save for the price of old tech) or grab a refurbished one. Seriously, having an Aluminum one may be a lot worse since it dents easier from users who don't take care of their stuff.
