One thing I've always found interesting is many (i have no evidence to say the majority, but it sure feels that way) people who have problems with laggy jailbroken ipods can fix it by NOT using their itunes backup. This makes me question what it is about the backup process/restoring backups that can cause lag?

I did not restore from my backup.

All i did was sync it up with my files.

(app compatibility thread here)

After a few days with 3.0 i've found that most of the apps work quite well.
At first i tried the "restore from backup" option when setting up 3.0
This was not a good choice. Consequently, i had issues with:
- YouTube - would launch, then abruptly crash
- Voice Memos - would launch and then freeze iPhone, requiring restart
- Phone - UI would disappear mid-call, freeze iphone, or not let me dial
- Palringo - would launch, then crash at login
- Pandora - would not launch
- EleMints - would not launch
- iPod - would launch and crash before showing me my library, corrupted my music database
- Search - results would not appear, would tremendously slow down iPhone
- Audio - delayed, or none at all
- Speaker Hiss - speakers would crackle and hiss even when volume was all the way down
- Keyboard - laggy beyond usability

After setting my iPhone up as a new device, all of the above problems were either fixed or ameliorated.
App Compatability/Issues:
- Photos - once zoomed in you cannot move your picture around
- Tweetie - some UI lag, lots of lag when taking picture for direct post to twitter
- Facebook - some UI issues, will not load any pictures
- Remote - no issues
- Voice Memos - lag
- Pandora - no issues
- Tetris - some lag, works fine
- Rolando - longer loading time, works fine
- DDR - some UI issues, does not play music along with arrows (voice commentary is still there which is odd)
- Ambiance (2) - crashes at splash screen
- Palringo - no issues
- Bank of America - some UI issues, won't remember my device
- EleMints - faster than on 2.2.1!
- EN-RU Dictionary - crashes upon database initialization
- WordBook - crashes while searching for word, (5-10s after launching)
- Translator - no issues
- Wikipanion - no issues
- Dictionaire - very laggy
- Pocket Guitar - no issues
- Loopt - no issues
- Urban Spoon - no issues

overall I'm happy with 3.0, with all the beta-testers, hopefully the next release will be significantly better.
Please Post Your findings!

Before you freak out about iPod, phone, voice memo and other crashes, RESTORE AND SETUP AS A NEW DEVICE!

this fixed at least 90% of my problems!

If I set up as a new device, won't this delete all my contacts and personal info? If not, please explain.

Thanks

Sorry, i should have put my post in context. I know that 3.0 has lag and bugs, which is expected from a beta.

I was talking about ipods/iphones in general when someone mentioned that clean installs can help.

I restored from backup at first, not the best choice.

Runs very smooth when setting up as a new phone.

Few overall bugs would be the lag time, iPod takes a bit to load up..

This is what worries me. I doubt people are going to be happy about having to start fresh, theyd much rather just upgrade.

Hopefully apple will be working on iTunes backup/restore methods to alleviate the problem.

A couple of people have asked for this:

I assume you know how to install the 3.0 firmware
(option-click on "Restore" under the "Summary" tab of your iPhone, select your .ipsw, install)

then when your iphone reboots, Itunes will take you to this page:
itunes-8-setting-up-new-phone.png

Select setup as a new iPhone and continue with the restore process.

this DOES NOT delete your contacts, music or bookmarks.
all of that data (by default) is backed up on your computer.
You will lose: (some) app settings + DLC, cookies/saved passwords, ringer/phone settings, favorites, photos that aren't backed up, anything you've customized under the "Settings" app.

assuming your music, contacts, email account settings, playlists and applications are synced on your mac, it will be like getting a new iphone, but keeping all of your content.

ok cool. thing is, i am not on a mac. I am using a dreadful PC. (I am signed up through my uncle through his dev program.)

Also, my contacts arent on my computer, i inputted them from my iPhone. does that mean they are still backed up on my computer or no?

Thank you for giving this information! I have all the symptoms the OP posted about. Especially no audio :( and laggy texting I seem to have deleted the origional ipsw file so im re installing it, and I am going to set it up as a new phone so there arent as many problems. :D
thanks

so i did what everyone said and clicked set up as new device.

guess what, still unable to access visual voicemail.

EDITeditEDIT//

i just let my phone call voicemail and after a bit it said "incorrect password" enter voicemail password and then it worked perfectly fine.

to fix audio...

Yeah, apple seems to have goofed something up in the audio stack...
try disabling lock sounds and keyboard clicks under your settings menu.
makes the keyboard a bit less laggy.

I just installed it now. So far, I've notice that the Network option takes forever to get into.

have you rebooted since last sync?

No, I haven't. Let me try that.

Edit: I tried it, and its still taking a longggg time.

Edit: I got my iPod working now. I had to sync is twice.

Also, my iPod isn't working correctly. Let me try and resync. I set it up as a new iphone by the way.

Tedious, i know, but you might want to try just putting one or two songs on your iPhone, then see if it will play those.

have you had any major UI crashes?
my database was corrupted after the phone UI crashed (i have no idea if they're related) try going to settings-->general-->about
does it say you have any songs or videos?
if not, you're corrupted :(

Another bug I forgot to mention.
When txting if I get a txt unlock and it takes me to sms.
The keyboard won't pop up until I go back to all of my messages and then go back into the conversation. very annoying.

Every once and a while for me the ringer/all sounds stop working. I have to restart the phone to get it to come back.

Anyone else have that one?

This happens to me all day long everyday since I updated. Except with mine I let it be and it comes back by itself. But when this happens all audio as a whole stops even the playback of music of videos.

By the way, by disabling the keyboard and lock sounds, it'll make the keyboard type faster and won't lag.

And another thing, I disable the MMS option in the settings. Now, my text message app opens a lot faster.

My 3.0 is really good!

I need some help...

I just signed up for the Developer Program and it says that my purchase will be shipping within 24 hours. Don't they just give me a code, or update my account or something. I'm confused...

These are some of the issues I have been able to capture thus far.

The one notice the OSD of the volume. This pops up everytime I end a phone call.

The other the SMS Keyboard is still portrait while in landscape mode.

And the last one the "Send" is being cut off on the side. Small graphical error but nonetheless an error.

You'll get an email with an activation code to click on...
