Last year, I started trying to preorder at around 4:30 am. I tried for several hours through both Apple & AT&T and eventually the best I was able to do was reserve mine due to rampant server crashing (always waiting until I was significantly through the process, so each crash & retry took that much longer). I still haven't decided which way I'm going to go this year, doing a full preorder (do they allow in-store pickup for those, or is it shipped to my house only?) or reserving and heading into the store. I kinda dug the experience last year, even though it took a lot longer than I'd anticipated.

Besides apple what other ways is there to preorder, I mean any app that would let you do it etc?

You can pre-order through the Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T websites. Or you can use the Apple Store App (apparently this worked very well for some people when ordering the iPad2).

Apple's site was BARELY working when the iPhone 4 went on preorder. I believe it was around 4 AM EST, but I forget. I was up reloading all night.

I have a feeling this launch won't be quite as crazy though.

So, when I go to AT&T's iPhone page now and click upgrade, it only shows me options for the 3GS and 4. Is the idea that the 4S will suddenly become an option at 3am EST? Or am I just on the wrong page?

Likewise for the Apple Store iPhone page it just shows "Buy Now" options for the 3GS and 4. Will the page get updated at 3am EST with a "Pre-order Now" for the 4S?

If I pre-order through Apple, will they handle everything for the AT&T upgrade side of things? Or, do I just get the phone and then have to activate it when it arrives? Will it arrive with my number pre-programmed and my account on AT&T live? What about my old phone (a 3GS)? Does that turn off when I get the 4S?

So many questions!!!

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you would know what you need in order to pre-order the 4S. I'm on a family plan with my brother, him being the main account holder, what information from him would I need to set up the pre-order myself?

You can trade your 3GS into Apple for about $100 bucks. Just check their site for the estimated value, you send it, and they give you an Apple gift card for the amount it's worth.

Been there done that. It's worth exactly $0 according to Apple's site. Hmmm...must be the crack on the case and the scratches. Hey, it's 28 months old. Giving the phone to a friend as a "Touch."
Thanks, though.

You need his phone number and the billing password he uses. If you use Apple's website you need the last 4 digits of the social security number too.

Extra server capacity is purchased by AT&T and Apple as they think the demand might need it. I do not think there will be a crush for the 4S and they should have enough to satisfy most needs.

I hope they don't underestimate demand by Sprint customers. I have been waiting very patiently, with an old phone, for Sprint to get with the program.

i remember the iPhone 4 pre order. it went live like 4 am EDT i think. i woke up at 6 to my dad going to work and pre ordered with one try. i think they were in stock until later that evening too. I'm waking up at like 2:50. also they have been making around 150000 per day for a while now. should have at least a few million.

Yep, mine is worthless too according to Apple.

*it's okay 3GS, I still love you. this doesn't change anything..*

By billing password, you mean the password he uses to log into his account on the AT&T website?
Also, I've never pre-ordered a phone before, so will I be able to keep my unlimited data that I have on my 3GS? Will there be an option to keep it or do I have to get one of the new ones they offer?

What is the best way to do this, go through apple or verizon?

Also is there a way I can pick it up instore as opposed to having it delivered.

So i'm planning on ordering from Apple.com an iPhone 4S for my brother, his wife, and myself. My brother's wife is the account owner of the family plan. Do I have to order for each one of us separately? Or can I pre-order all the phones at once?

Just an FYI... I went into my AT&T Store and the District Manager helped me today. He said that Apple promised 1.7 million iPhones on Day 1 for AT&T as apposed to less than 1million with the iPhone 4... ;-)

With the iPhone 4 pre-order, I managed to pre-order it that night at around 8 PM.

So they were definitely not sold out within a couple hours. However, the AT&T and Apple websites were crashing the entire day which is probably how I snuck in and still had a phone available.

If all goes perfectly and there's no website freezing they might sell out a lot quicker.

Is that total 1.7 mill overall or only for pre-orders?

Yeah, it should be the password he uses to login to AT&T (at least it is for Verizon). Also Verizon lets you keep unlimited data and I think I've seen people say AT&T does too.

why are people talking about last year apple servers... right now they have the huge farm and could easily use their unused server resources from there and Apple would have no problem w/ keeping the site from crashing....
