Switching to a different OS, can be jarring and cause panic, and give an uncomfortable feeling

But...you have to give it time, not just a day or two, that's not fair whatsoever, even one week isn't enough. It needs to be a solid month, and also not touch your other device at all, lock it up in a drawer, so it forces you to use the new phone.

See, this is my fear with switching to something for a bit. Beyond the heavy investment in the Apple ecosystem, years of use, etc I still have a 5S that I use for work daily. The people I've encountered that are the most frustrated with the Mac OS are the same ones that kept a PC handy so that they could quickly give up and go back. I feel like switching between the two constantly through the week (I only check my work iPhone once a day or so on the weekend) would make it an even rougher transition.

Either way, I posted on Facebook earlier asking if anyone was selling an S4, S5 or Nexus 5. Even offered to trade my personal iPhone 5. Figured the worst that can happen is I hate it and still end up with an iPhone 6 (or whatever it's called) if it's released later this year.

edit: And giving up the work 5S isn't an option. We're heavily against the Android OS thanks to security concerns in our organization. At this point we only have a handful of Blackberry devices with the rest being iPhones/iPads.

I know that only I can make this choice..:)
I would keep both but I need the money, so one of the devices has to go back. If it is going to be the M8, then this has to be done by tomorrow, otherwise the return window closes..

Oooh that's a bit tricky. I see your predicament then if you only have till tomorrow.
I guess sit down with them both and play play play.

It really sounds like you're attached to ios. In the end I see you staying with the iPhone.

I have decided! It was a very close call..

I love the iPhone's screen quality (color accuracy), OS coherency, but I am tired of going in and out of apps all the time..
I chose the HTC One M8, because it offers the same great build quality as the iPhone, packed in a better design, a gorgeous 5" screen and an amazing sound system.
The OS is also nice and I like a lot of things about it..

When the iPhone 6 comes out I will reconsider, but till then the HTC One M8 has become my daily driver..

There is a simple select/unselect box which you can use and google will backup and restore your apps and *some* settings when you switch device. you simply have to sign on using the same gmail account. look for this option in the settings category. this can be done irrespective of the device brand. this will automate reinstallation of previously used apps.

This is what I expected to happen when I switched phones recently (Motorola to Samsung), but it didn't. I was careful to make sure the old device was backing up and I checked the appropriate box when setting up the new phone.

In the end, I had to go to my apps list on the Play store to re-download them. This wouldn't be so bad if I could click a single button to select & download all apps installed on *a specific* old device *at a specific point in time*. But instead, I have to peck through a long list of all apps I have installed on any previous device even if those apps had been deleted a long time ago.

lets say you get a major brand (sony, htc, motorola, samsung etc). they typically include backup/restore functionality on the device without using third party app. in addition they also provide PC software that can also handle your backup restore.

Have not had opportunity to try this yet, but as you suggest below, it's a limitation to have to use a PC for this.

the benefit of using a simple app from play store is that, it frees you from using a pc to restore.

regarding home screen shortcuts, as you know there are many "launchers" on android. if you goto the settings of that launcher, you can easily restore app shortcuts and everything else for that launcher. so you have to use the same launcher in the new device if you want to have it restored.

Thanks I didn't know that. But, to me it seems a bit of a nuisance to have to use a 3rd party launcher in order to achieve this, because I don't have a desire to use a 3rd party launcher for any other reason.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.app.manager

try Jrummy's "ultimate backup pro" (free and paid $1.50 app). excellent utility. rooting is NOT required but if it is, you get some additional features. this could handle many things you've mentioned.

Thanks. I'll take a look. But a general issue I have with the backup apps I've looked at is they back up the whole app or the installer. This seems like a waste of space to me. Ultimately, all I'd like is a snapshot (device + point in time) list which can be used to automate re-downloading of apps and re-creating home screen shortcuts.

EDIT: also, by the way, the reason Google handles its backups differently (if you get a new device it re-downloads all of your apps and re-syncs all of your contacts) is because with the ten million Android devices out there you can't simply take the exact files from device A and put them on device B. If you installed everything on your Galaxy S3 and then bought a Note 3, using an actual backup file would cause a mess of FCs and errors.

It'd be like thinking you can just put your hard drive into any laptop and it'll work. They're working with contingencies.

Yes, the complexity is considerably greater. But I still think Google/Android could be doing a considerably better job to facilitate the restore process. e.g. my comment above regarding point-in-time restore of apps from Play Store.

Nice mate. Just think if you end up not liking it then its not long at all until the iPhone 6 anyway.

Ok, I know it's crazy, but I was chatting with my brother when I had a look at some pics and started comparing the picture and screen quality. The HTC has over saturated, unnatural, bright colors, that will be for most people really great, but the iPhone has more realistic, perfectly balanced colors..
Have a look for your selves..
Then I compared two video footages my brother made during our video calls, we made one with the iPhone and one with the HTC. The difference in quality is like night and day.
I really like the HTC One M8, but the lesser quality of the display (more) and the mediocre quality during video chats did it for me. The device has already been reset and packed, ready to go back to Amazon..I really wanted to keep it, but I cannot settle with less quality. I guess, everyone has his priorities. For me, color accuracy is very important and I cannot accept over saturated colors. That was the reason I got rid of my iPad Mini Retina..
Back to the iPhone!

Everybody has different priorities :)

Yes, definitely. If I had noticed the difference in display quality I wouldn't have gone through this dilemma at all. The iPhone does all the basic and important things better and that is what matters to me most. The M8 is a very good device but it fails me in two very important areas.

And that is why we all have a choice ;) We all like different things. For you you prefer the iPhone screen, someone else will prefer the M8 screen.

But I agree with the iPad Mini screen, compared to the Air it's certainly not as high quality.

Quite frankly it's easy to get the feeling that this whole thread was made up.

Made up?? You must be so clever, you got me...

I made up the picture I posted, right? Photoshop?
Why settle for worse quality?

You were right. Android might have much more features, but 90% of the stuff can be done on iOS and Apple's OS offers a better quality overall. Much more polished.
The deal breaker for me was the color accuracy of the M8 screen. After comparing the two devices side by side, I couldn't forget the difference. No way

Yes of course, this whole thread was designed so you could make a point that the iPhone and iOS is superior to Android and the HTC phone you bought.

So, I spent 400€ in buying apps for Android, 200€ in HTC One accessories and 650€ for the device itself, just to prove my point? Hmm..very interesting

LOL $400 Euros in Android apps?!?!?!

This is my last comment in this thread...you've got enough effort out of me so far.

Good luck with your iPhone and if it works for you then great.

It is ok to like your iPhone. But why make a spectacle in denouncing android? It is hardly believable that someone who has spent so much money on a platform and yet is doing this kind of charade?

If you want to push your iPhone as a platform of choice then do it with subtleties instead of using over the top and hardly believable denunciations of the competitor. Then again many ifans herr suffered from this flaw.

Same here. But I'll wait until iOS 8 jailbreak before I get an iPhone 6. I have my iPad mini retina to keep me company when it comes to iOS stuff.

Yeah, I am really pushing iOS as a platform. I am going to advertise the hell out of it..

The last few?

I would suggest you check your nose..
