People seem to forget the a5 was the fastest processor apple used until about a month ago when the iPhone 5 came out. I'd like to see some nexus 7 vs iPad 2 benchmarks.

Lol

Quite amazing how many people are complaining about the price difference between $299 and $329. That "3" really throws you people off...... its a $30 difference. Complaining about $30? Really? It still has alot going for it over the competition (Namely its App Store, Inclusion of cameras that other devices do not have, and it still technically is higher resolution than the iPad 2even though it's not Retina.)

Solid product if you ask me. They can't make it cheaper than the most expensive iPod Touch, it just wouldnt make sense. The next revision will be spot on though for our spec sheet wishlists.

Ok, Apple is now officially acknowledging that it's a greedy money hungry company. I'm sorry but if you pay 329 for a 16GB mini you've either got more money than common sense or are a complete moron. That's friggin rediculous. WOW!

I like bananas cause they aint got bones!

It's not that amazing....actually its quite expected...silly or not, there is a very real psychological component to price points...$300 is a common price barrier for many people regarding these types of devices, especially if you view the MIni more as a toy than as a practical tool...

Considering the nexus 7 was competing and/or winning against an iPad 3, I'd say it beats the iPad2/mini easily.

hard to say b.c a mini not having to power a retina display and running a far less demanding IOS (versus jellybean), may score very close benchmarks. Granted what do benchmarks really mean when you are comparing different OS's.

And of course it really isn't $329. Add tax and Apple Care+ and we are looking at $450. Throw in a Smart Cover and bam ... $500.

Seriously rethinking my pre-ordering after the initial lust has lessened.

 It really is $329.

You can make that argument for any tablet on the market. I'm buying it at 329, without applecare and I'm on the fence whether I want the smart cover.

Don't buy Apple Care+, Smart Cover, and bam... back down to around $329

Based on the specs and the ios 6 update, the mini's web browsing performance should be in line with the ipad 2 and faster than the Nexus 7. Prior to ios 6, it was slower than the nexus 7.

the price makes total sense to me...

This may have been stated before, but there's another very good reason (besides the obvious superior build quality) to price the mini above the "comparable" tablets out there: as soon as the inevitable retina version of the iPad Mini comes out next year, these 1st gen versions will drop to at or below the price of the comparable small tablets. Then there will be entry level pricing for a still mostly superior iPad mini, and an option to step up to something a little better for that "still bargain price" of $329.

Eventually everyone will have access to cheap iPad Minis like they do the iPhone 4. It really is brilliant marketing.

So, Apple wants me to buy a Nexus 7 this year and an iPad Min 1 next year? ok, I can do that...:)

Interesting to see the emotional valence in the OP and other "it's too expensive!" posts.

Personally, I think $329 is reasonable given the likely quality of the device and the fact that it does everything the iPad 2 does, plus Siri, in a smaller, more portable, crazy-thin-and-light package. I think it's a great option for those who want a smaller device, and it's great, even surprising, that it's not being treated like a budget product like the iPad 2 (Wi-Fi only, 16GB only) but being offered with a cellular option and with up to 64GB storage.

The Kindle Fire is nowhere near as nice a device and is being sold at cost as a vehicle for Amazon's content sales. The Nexus 7 is not as nice a device and is also thought to be sold near cost. Apple makes good stuff and charges money for it. Get used to it. Or enjoy your Android device.

Yeah. In the interest of full disclosure, I will probably buy an iPad mini. It fits what I'm looking for and I'm already invested in the iCosystem.

But I won't bother considering it until after the Christmas season. I may even wait until they start showing up in the Refurb section.

The price isn't the issue for me. I'm just underwelmed with the specs. I would have been fine if the WiFi has included GPS and it had an A6 processor instead of the A5.

But as it stands Apple just isn't offering enough to justify the premium.

I see the Google Nexus 7 as the brenchmark for seven in tablets. In my mind Apple missed the mark with the iPad Mini

This is actually a good idea. If I end up having to wait due to short supplies, then maybe I can get a refurb and even get the next larger capacity version at not much more than $329. Hmmm...

So now you are comparing prices of used iPad to a new iPad mini. That's just silly.

As I said before, the price point is easy to justify when you compare it to an iPad 2 at $399. As far as the Nexus 7 and Fire HD, the difference is in the software. It should say something to you that Amazon and Google have to give them away at or below cost in order to even make a small dent in the market.

Silly? Hardly

The iPad Mini is inferior to the Ipad 3 (10" tablet market) and inferior to the Nexus 7 (7" tablet market). Instead of choosing to go back to the Nexus, I went with a iPad 3. I could have easily gotten a refurb. The iPad Mini is a joke.

If you honestly think the price is justifying be basing it on the iPad 2 price you might be right. Both have old specs and low dpi screens.

This is great.

$329 pisses off a lot of people who aren't willing to spend or can't afford to.

THIS IS GREAT I REPEAT...

1. Less people buying this product means Apple will have to reduce the price or up the spec quickly for the next generation

2. Less competition for those who can afford and don't want to wake up early in the morning to pre-order :)

3. If people actually buy them, that means it is priced right and Apple makes loads of $$$.

Win-win for everyone doesn't matter how you look at it :)

perfect size, price is a bit high but only about $30 higher than i thought, the thing that will stop me from buying is the resolution my Galaxy S3 has pretty much the same resolution and its 3 inches smaller

I looked up bench marks earlier the iPad2/3 beat the n7 in all but 2 benchmarks I saw and the ones it won in were very close. Add in the cameras and iPad experience and the price point is pretty dead on. 10% more pixels or whatever isn't going to be the end all be all the mini is going to sell like crazy.
