What is all the talk about resolution? Yeah, it´s not retina - but on some hand-ons they say it still looks pretty damn sharp and clear.
I suppose you will see the differnce if you compare them side by side, but is it really that big a deal??

But then again, maybe I just wanna talk myself into ordering one :D

The only things subjective is the screen size difference and app availability.

Its a fact the nexus offers a better processor, more space, higher resolution screen than the iPad Mini. There is no arguing that the hardware is better in the Nexus.

Think you're getting "subjective" and "objective" confused.

That's why I mentioned within city centres.

I already answered this, with which I will quote below

2) Notwithstanding counter-argument 1. There are dozens of Android apps available for which you can download a reasonably updated map of pretty much the entire 48 states.

Accuracy improves with more points of reference which includes the greater number of cellular base stations such as that are present in city centres.

Regardless, it is better than the accuracy of not having any points of reference when no GPS signal is available.

BTW, non GPS location utilizes not only triangulation but also trilateration and multilateration to improve accuracy.

That's great and all but trilateration and triangulation are NOT GPS and doesn't improve GPS performance. They are complementary technologies and GPS is still VERY useful MOST of the time even without cellular capabilities.

I doubt it is faster. I have a Nexus 7 and it was a match for my iPad 3 never mind an iPad 2.

Yeah I have a Nexus 7 too and on larger apps (the few actually designed for an Android tablet is noticeably sluggish. I totally hate the keyboard, but at least now is smooth moving between screens, that is a first. Build quality.. well lets just say you get what you pay for. How about all those display complaints about the top layer of the display coming apart and the plastic backing cracking on the edges.. Mine didn't do that, but there are tons of complaints about it on Android forums.

I was hoping it would be no more than $299. BUT, I'm really not surprised. Since when has Apple been competitive with pricing . Their computers have always been a lot more than the competition but I still bought a Macbook Pro and love it. I will be buying the mini for my 6 year old. I bet some of you really want to let me have it now....lol.

Jony Ivy just bought an eighteen million dollar mansion in San Francisco.

Send an email to the fictitious Tim Cook address and ask him to post a "mansion tour " video on Apple's site so you can see what your paying for.

What the hell are you whining about?

My first iPod was £300. My first iPod Touch was £300. The iPad mini is £269.

Well you are happy, the folks that just pre-orders are happy.... What a great day Eh!!

It's fantastic, A lovely Autumn morning where I am as well.

The difference is I was going to get one but when unveiled it wasn't up to the standard I was expecting so I'm not parting with my cash for one. It has pushed me towards a competitors one though.

I do need a new iDevice though I will just need to either wait a few months until a new one comes out or get a refurbed iPad 3.

If you don't like it, don't buy it. It's literally as simple, if not simpler then that.

They've always considered themselves a premium computer company, people are willing to pay the premium for a product they know is good.

The same argument as before with the netbooks: apple NEEEDS to sell a cheap laptop to stay alive. I think that was proven wrong....
Same with the iPad mini. The price of the iPad 4 didn't change so just buy that if you like. The mini isn't intended to compete with 7" tablets. It's intended to make people realize what they're missing with those and give them a fairly cheaper option of owning an iPad. Just think how much potential the iPad mini has...

In the WWDC session about Location Services (which is the part of MacOS X and iOS that tells your device where it is, no matter whether it has GPS, WiFi or whatever) they explained that actually WiFi does in some cases significantly improve GPS.

Happens when you are in a location with high buildings, where GPS runs into trouble because the buildings cover the satellites, there is reflection of the GPS signals and so on. So that's the worst situation possible for GPS, while on the other hand you will get lots of WiFi signals. Obviously if you are in the middle of the countryside, with no obstacles to GPS, and no WiFi / cell tower anywhere near, GPS rules.

I think you are!!!

Silly? Hardly

Yes, it is silly to compare pricing of used products to new products in this way.

The iPad Mini is inferior to the Ipad 3 (10" tablet market)

And the iPad 3 is no longer for sale.

and inferior to the Nexus 7 (7" tablet market).

Only in screen density. I'd go out on a limb and say that's not the only factor most people use to pick out a tablet.

Instead of choosing to go back to the Nexus, I went with a iPad 3. I could have easily gotten a refurb. The iPad Mini is a joke.

Good for you.

If you honestly think the price is justifying be basing it on the iPad 2 price you might be right. Both have old specs and low dpi screens.

Yep.

iPad mini buyers are paying a premium price not because of the "quality" components, but because of the dismal manufacturing yield rate of the touchscreen module.

"According to a new report, the primary culprit for the mini's pricing is low yield rates for new touchscreen technology called GF DITO (or GF2) found in the slate.....DigiTimes' sources say the DITO film sensors used in the mini have run into mass production issues, making it about 40 percent to 50 percent more expensive that similar 7-inch devices that employ OGS or G/G touch-screen tech."

http://www.techradar.com/us/news/mob...-price-1107427

That would make me worry that there may be serious quality issues with the first batch of minis as Apple may lower their QC bar to get more on the shelves for the holidays. Good luck you early adopters......

I'm very curious what are the color gamuts, brightness, contrast, etc are on the iPad mini display. The early reports do say it looks great but often times the wider color gamuts require bigger batter consumption so I was thinking Apple might've skipped it. But even the small battery equipped iPod Touch has the wider color gamut now so it's natural to expect that from iPad mini.

From your posts we know you despise the iPad. But stop bitching about a MEDIA device not being able to do GPS. Email Tcook@apple.com and let him know how you feel about it. :D

Actually he despises Apple in general and the only reason he's in Macrumors is so that he can rile up users here. I say that because I see his handle in many internet forums and everywhere he does the same thing of criticizing Apple and telling everyone how terrible Apple products and users are.

Except the Nexus 7 is almost 1 inch smaller than the ipad mini. The Ipad Mini's DPI is atrocious.

After reading this post, I will toss my HP Pavilion G6 15.6" LCD with 1366x768 resolution, out the window.

I realize I can no longer stand reading text on my PC laptop screens that is half the iPad Mini's DPI, which is atrocious.

That makes my PC laptop LCD way beyond atrocious.

----------

The fact that they made the ipad mini almost in inch larger than the nexus 7 while having a lower resolution is what makes the ipad mini so crappy. Enjoy your low DPI experience.

What are you reading this website with? A computer with a lower DPI screen than the iPad mini I bet.

Not for all...

I did the 12% Cashback through my Discover card.

$357 (after tax) - $42 (Cashback) = $315. So essentially paid $290 + tax. :)

All the talk about how awful the DPI/PPI is on the iPad Mini.

Perspective:

My 24" 1080p monitor: 91.79 ppi
iPad Mini: 163 ppi

Anyone tossing out their outdated 1080p 24" LCD monitors, please let me know.

Nexus 7 may be getting a refresh next week. Nexus is pretty compelling given its GPS and Google Maps.

Google Maps would only useful if you are connected to WiFi.

I just bought a 32GB Nexus 7 for $249.
