$399!!! For the SE :O Unbelievable ? Who's surprised?

Most speculation I've read thought it would take the $449 price point of the outgoing 5s. So this is a plus.

Don't see the 5s on sale anymore. So I guess any availability will be closeout models. Places like Cricket were already selling the 5s cheaper in the last month, so now we know why.

The iPhone SE does look like excellent value for the price.

It basically has iPhone 6s processing power, along with TouchID and Apple Pay, for $250 less. The savings are even more for 5 and 5s owners who can reuse their existing cases.

By around £27. Don't know why people make a fuss about it as its always been this way with pretty much everything, I remember the same old arguments about video games back in the 90s.

Congrats on the UK being cheaper than the continent. In Poland the "european Apple tip" is over £44 on the 16 GB model.

I won't lie, I was excited for the SE and even contemplated trading in my 6 Plus for one, but the more I looked into the details the more disappointed I became. FaceTime camera is the same, the display is the same as far as resolution and it's not bonded to the cover glass, MDM 9625 LTE chip, single stream 802.11AC instead of MIMO, and I think it'll only come with 1GB of ram. Still a SWEET phone at a wonderful price.

iPhone 6S 16GB bill of material: is estimated at over $200 - assume its $228 of a retail price of $649; bill of material as a fraction of retail price 35.1% (ex software dev, distribution cost, etc )

SE: take the same BOM to retail price ratio - $140 would be a low end bill of material for SE. However, it's probably likely to be a bit higher, because it shares some current gen components - they'll make it back by the 64GB model markup (less than $17 material cost for a $100 upgrade). The main SE vs 6S saving would be about $20-25 from the non-3D touch display; a cheaper wireless chipset; 1GB less GB of ram will be just over $10. Knowing Apple the cost of supply chain probably fell since 5S for that mechanical housing. Would be reasonable to imagine if they spent $140-180 on the hardware.

Take into account that historically 5S is cheaper to make by about 30% cheaper in material - it's definitely possible for Apple to hit a lower BOM and keep the A9 chip. Just wonder if they've got 2GB that's all.

I know, I was thinking the same thing. Only other thing I noticed was that the wireless speeds were slower, but still better than 5S. There is also potential for graphics to be better than 6S since the A9 is driving a lower resolution, although they probably reduced the clock speed to match and save battery.
Actually maybe they didn't, if you look at the 9.7 iPad Pro, it says it is only 2.4 times in CPU faster and 4.3 times faster in graphics than the A7, but the 12.9 iPad Pro is 2.5 times faster CPU, and 5 times faster graphics. The graph for the SE however is the same with the 6S

In Finland, the SE prices by Apple are

16GB 499€
64GB 599€

Apple is selling iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S as follows:

iPhone 6 (1GB RAM)
64GB 759€ (160€ more expensive than the SE)

iPhone 6S (2GB RAM)
64GB 869€ (270€ more expensive than the SE)

I don't have an iPhone atm and I've been thinking about buying my second one (iPhone 4 was my first back in 2010). To me, RAM capacity of the SE is going to be the deciding factory: if it only has 1 GB, iPhone 6 is going to be the better choice for only 160€ more. BUT if the SE does have 2GB RAM, then it's the better value for money for having similar specs as the 6S but costing 270 € less and that's a big saving IMO :)

for that money you could basically fly to NYC and enjoy a day there and buy an iPhone SE at the US Apple Store lol

399$ + roughly 9% of tax (if i am not mistaken) = 388 Euro

iPhone displays have been laminated since Retina IIRC.

Could demand have slowed down for the 6s family so much that they wanted to put the internals(most of them) in a slightly tweaked 5s body and sell them? If this device sells in lower priced markets, it will help show Apple still selling millions of phones next quarter and helps the stock price.
On a more cheerful note, I'm really impressed with the advertised battery life. It has 20-30% better battery life than the 6s on internet browsing.

The iPhone 5 and 5s weren't smd the iPad Air 1, Mini 1-3 weren't either. There's a large air gap between the cover glass and the LCD panel.
Yet somehow every result from Google tells that iPhone 5/5S has laminated displays. On iFixit, you can order only a single piece of front panel with digitizer & display, but not a separate front glass (w/ digitizer) and LCD display for 5/5S.
