Ok. I got it.
Apple tend to promote new product using this way. Fantastic.
Since I am still using at least three devices without force touch, I would surely skip this iteration of iPhone.
Maybe, when iOS 11 comes, I could know what could happen on force touch. For now, I don't have much idea.

Apple introduced the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus with several new features this week, one of the most significant being 3D Touch. The pressure-sensing technology enables iPhone users to perform additional multi-touch gestures called "Peek" and "Pop" to access Quick Action shortcut menus or preview content within apps.

Apple added a 3D Touch page to its website earlier this week with some examples of what Peek and Pop gestures can be used for, including previewing emails and websites, viewing photos you've taken while taking new ones, quickly accessing your contacts, taking a selfie, quick compose and more.

One of the more useful actions that 3D Touch makes possible is pressing the iPhone screen to turn the on-screen keyboard into a virtual trackpad (pictured on left).Existing iPads running iOS 9 will also have similar functionality, with users able to control an on-screen cursor by moving two fingers anywhere on the screen, including over the QuickType keyboard, to select, edit and move text.

3D Touch also enables iPhone 6s and 6s Plus users to press the left side of the Home screen to switch to multitasking view, press lightly for finer lines or more deeply for thicker ones in Notes, swipe left to delete an email or swipe right to mark it as unread in Mail and more.

Wow this is hilarious. I had this feature on IOS 9 beta 3 so now Apple is trying to pass it off as a 3D touch exclusive. I wish people would stop falling for Apple Bs all the time. I love IOS but holy smokes some of those 3D features can actually be done by software like 3D pop up its really not hard at all. It might be different but if you hold on a link in text message you should be able to get a 3D pop up menu you don't need force touch for that. Just like on my nexus when I hold on icons I get a pop up menu of different shortcuts just like that they demonstrated at their event. I do believe 3D touch Is real but some of that stuff is crap just to get users to buy the phone. Like really Apple if my old ass LG slide can run live wallpapers in the background which is hell of a less power device compared to any iPhone still on the market including the 4s then why can't we get those new wallpapers that are only for the new models? Little stuff like that bothers me when it comes to Apple seriously

Show some evidence?

I'm not trying to outright say I don't believe you, it's just that I don't remember this feature on my 6+ when I was testing out the beta releases. You're probably right but I need to be sure...
Nope this guy is telling the truth I am also a beta tester and this was one of the features on IOS 9 beta early stages and it worked well 3D touch ******** needed. They also didn't bring back the predictive text on lock screen which I used a lot. Apple is really falling off

I'm confused.

Are apple lying and the force detection does not work, and it's actually a time delay thing?

If you are using the force touch, and you tap and lightly keep your finger on the icon, then, if this IS REAL nothing will happen.
It will only happen if you apply more actual physical pressure onto the screen yes?

This wont change the way I use my phone at all, pointless, I can just as easily do this with normal
So I don't crack it...

Isn't the ugly case you presumably use alone enough to stop this happening? I mean these screens are really hard to mark, they only break if you drop them from height face down and really, the enjoyability of not having an ugly screen protector with its disgusting lines around the home button and its changing of the way a beautiful piece of glass and screen have engineered far out weigh the unlikely risk of that happening

No, it's not time-related. No, they're not lying.

Yes, it depends on how much force you apply.

Thanks.
I was hoping it was "REAL" and not just made up marketing speak.

I'm correct, am I not that, at the moment this technology does not exist for the iPad or iPad Pro?
Something for the future perhaps?

Must admit, I'm very tempted by an iPad Pro as it's the device I have wanted since the launch of the original iPad many year ago. it looks excellent...

I just need to work out how I can justify such a device :)

It was only there in beta 1.

"Yeah, my Samsung has it"
"Yeah, my Samsung is just like it"

Sometimes I just don't understand these people.

I'm still not sure if I will upgrade to this phone, maybe not, since I already have a 6 Plus, and it is still fast and the battery life is still really great.

After using the 6+ for a few months I'd swap it out for a 6s. It's too big for a phone.

Probably due to it not working as expected all the time. At least one person in this thread has said it would activate while they were typing. Apple tends to remove features from betas that they find don't work well or at least to their standards. Then everyone complains that it's gone. Happens just about every year.

Dude wtf are you talking about. That feature worked well because I also had it in the beta version. It was no lag at all. Apple took it out just so they can say you need 3D touch for it to work when that's not true. Just like they gave the new iPhones and iPad live wallpapers. Why couldn't old iPhones get live Wallpapers? My old LG slide android phone with less power than the iPhone 4 can still use live wallpapers well and it reacts to your touch. This could have been on older iPhones specially the 64bit iPhones. It's another way for Apple to get people to buy it's products. It had nothing to do with it not being implemented right.

3d touch is basically a right click menu

Roughly, sure.

and obviously there's some form of mouse pointer like interface(trackpad) mode.

No, there isn't. iOS has no notion of a pointer, no notion of a current position (text editing aside), no notion of focus. It doesn't know when you hover over something. A mouse would be a terribly unfit input device.

Oh... Right... The concern troll again...... Apple falling off, etc, etc, etc...

It didn't work well for everyone, especially older devices, and that's all you need to know.
They've removed things from Betas before and they'll do it in future. That's why they're called betas.

Have you used the trackpad mode? I could imagine a 3rd party bluetooth keyboard implementing a trackpad like feature where 1 finger is registered as 2 fingers on a keyboard to activate the trackpad mode so like a mouse pointer you could point to the text you'd like to highlight and manipulate. Even if it is just for text that would be a lot easier to use than reaching out and tapping on cells in excel then long pressing to select data.

It's probably a lot more complex than I imagine from the backend.

Allow me to use Bluetooth mice already.
I get that a desktop OS interface makes no sense on a mobile device with touch input, I get that you don't want touch-oriented OS GUIs on the desktop, however, the reason for the big buttons (that by the way got a lot smaller, especially with the surge of using small text links) is that they are easier to hit with a thick finger.
That doesn't explain why I can't use a device with more precision.
I hate raising my hands and operating the screen to move in text in Pages on my iPad.
The Smart Case is unstable as it is.

You're basically advocating for a MacBook.

Have you used the trackpad mode?

Yes. I miss it.

The original post was about mouse pointers in iOS.

As for highlighting, Bluetooth keyboards already let you do that — the expected stuff like moving around with ← ↑ ↓ → keys and selecting using ⇧ is all there, and has been for several versions.

I think what I'm trying to describe with the trackpad on a third party bluetooth keyboard is a built in trackpad, similar to a laptop, that activates the "trackpad" mode so that you can highlight text with a single finger.

A mouse pointer in ios would make a lot of sense aside from moving and resizing windows what couldn't work?

Right click = Peek with "pop" added to the pop up menu
Hot corners to activate multitasking etc.

Selecting. Focusing. Hovering.

Ok well specifically for working within apps I think a mouse pointer would make a lot of sense and produce a desktop like experience.

I think what you're imagining is the complete os desktop experience.

Some apps I can think of that would benefit from a mouse pointer:

1. Excel
2. Vector design programs
3. Games
