My googling skills are failing me, or I was wrong.
I can't find an example of someone embedding fingerprint sensor in the display.
I did see several articles about something making it possible earlier this year though; if it's not around yet, it's certainly on its way.
I think it was a device last year that had it embedded under the screen at the bottom. Worked half the time apparently. Can't remember what it was.

Problem: I still run across people who don't understand how to bring up the Notification Center or command center. It's just not an immediately intuitive thing like pinch to zoom was. I foresee people having a similar issue with deep presses.
I'll give you that.
I do still have the conversation "press the main button"; "which button?"; "the one button you can see right in front of you".
I suppose with Notification Center or command Center, we weren't really told about them on the device.
With Touch ID, it's part of the new device setup.
Even Siri looks like it'll get a bit more featuring.
If Apple train people in the new device setup, like they do with Touch ID, then maybe people will know about deep presses.

How did you trigger it and use it?

Two fingers. Same as the iPad. I loved it and was sad when they removed it.

Now I'm mad. It wasn't a mistake that it was in iOS 9 beta 1 like they said it was - that was a late decision to make it an iPhone 6S exclusive feature. Sometime between beta 1 and 2 they decided to make it a selling point for the 6S.

More likely they just decided it was a better and less accident prone implementation.

I think it will come back. Wasnt this a feature at WWC with two fingers trackpad? I dont think they drop that what they announced in the keynote just for the deep press feature on the new iphone. They wouldve known back then to not put it in.

I'm pretty sure it was dropped because it can't be done one handed. All the other iphone gestures and functionality is possible one handed, but that wasn't.

Sorry, but this doesn't seem so handy... Why would I want to hold and wait to see the contents of a email? I can just as easily tap it, it opens right away and I can go back if needed. They make it sound like opening a email takes an hour combined...

Same for the camera, I can just tap it and often, your front camera will be the one that starts up because that's the one you've used the last. No need to tap, hold and wait...

This doesn't seem like a feature you'd really want nor does it improve the user experience.

I don't expect very many to agree with you or I, but I feel like 3D Touch was something they dreamed up but didn't know what to do with.

It isn't hard to find

from this video it would appear my virtual pointer is being control by two physical pointers (fingers) and so two contacts on the screen. i'm wondering if this is as usable as a single finger? Or is it still two fingers in this now announced version?

Never going to happen. There UI isn't based on cursor control.
That's not really an issue. Touch interfaces just have a larger area to interact with than cursor interfaces. Hell, there is already a cursor of sorts built into iOS. It's used by Assistive Touch to imitate gestures.

Most developers will implement 3D touch.

You will use it close to 100 times a day.

Once you get used to it, you will never want to be without it.

Yet until September 25th, let's just call it a gimmick.

Just like touch ID was a gimmick because Motorola Atrix had a finger print scanner first and it failed.

They had a feature that you could press hard on the keyboard and then move the cursor around with one finger working on older iPhones?

I guess the four-finger gestures are also limited to only the iPad to boost iPad sales.
It was activated by two fingers just like on the iPad, most people use two fingers to type on the iPhone keyboard. 4 fingers at once on anything but the Plus might be cumbersome but 2 isn't.

I was excited for this when they unveiled it for iOS 9 but guess they just saved it for the S models and the ipad. Highlighting text is a pain sometimes... must resist upgrading lol

Would it really be that much easier if instead of highlighting the text your iPhone turned into a trackpad instead? Not sure I see the use?

Turning into Samsung slowly.

The are both moving to advance then copy each others stuff as well.

Will hard screen protectors mess with 3D touch in anyway do you think?

Doubt it. I have had a glass screen cover over my Note 3 and now my 5 and the pressure sensitivity hasn't ever been impacted. I don't see why Apple would be any different.

Definitely one of the cooler things they've done recently. Don't know of any Android phones with Force Touch-er, 3D Touch.

Notes have had a pressure sensitive screen both on the phones and their tablets. It's especially helpful when using the stylus to markup documents or writing notes/drawing. I think it's just a matter of implementing the software functions where needed if they prove helpful.

My Note 5 disagrees.

Here too. Fingerprint ID on the Note 5 is as accurate as my wife's iP6. We've both played around testing them and they are on par with one another now.

Oh and my finger print sensor on my Note 5 compared to my old 6 plus is far more usefully. It allows me to log Into websites using my finger print. I downloaded an app that allows me to lock certain apps that can only be accessed with my finger print. It's amazing.

^^ this is a very cool feature set. Want to lock your photos or text message apps, easy to do. You can even protect specific notifications. I like the web site protections too. some may call this redundant but one never knows who could and does have access to your phone or stuff when you're out and about. If I login to my bank account I feel much better doing it on my phone with a fingerprint than by typing in a password.

Sad but true. I just re-watched the keynote, then read through all the specs one more time. What hit me harder than ever was just how little change there is.

Apple's hype really is remarkable. One views the presentation the first time and comes away feeling like maybe it's worth upgrading. But the second or third time through the marketing materials and specs reveals that this may be the least improved of any iPhone to date.

Only if you ignore all other S releases. I have no idea what "innovation" you expect in an established market. they've upgraded all the internals, added a new method of interaction, and changed the case materials. Hardly anything is the same. I have no idea what specs you read. Screen size and resolution?

Maybe a bit out of context, but can someone tell me how this new cursor works on iOS 9?
More importantly the select and edit/move thing?
Every time I can with some effort select a text (thankfully random) it accidentally erases the damn thing!

Cool, thanks.

I'm in the "home button is going away on iPhone 7" camp.

I think Apple are preparing us for the home button removal, or certainly massively reduced bezels and a different kind of home button.

Apple refer to it as the "Touch ID sensor" on the diagram on their 6s tech specs page now. They call it a "home/Touch ID sensor" on the 6.
Small thing, but potentially significant.

Multitasking can be activated using 3D Touch now. One less use for a home button.

I can't think of a non-home button solution for reachability right now, but I'm sure Apple will.

It's like how they gave us Touch ID on the 5s, to prepare us for Apple Pay on the 6.
They gave us swipe to go back, to prepare us for bigger screens.

Touch ID can be embedded in the screen, or in the bezel, or somewhere else.

I doubt Touch ID will be embedded in the screen next year. But I can see something like this on a slightly thinner iPhone 7

I'm no engineer, but I know that a screen like that would be significantly harder to manufacture. Especially given the high resolution.

Sometimes I have a hard time highlighting specific text as the phone will try to highlight the entire block of text. I haven't tried the iOS 9 trackpad thing but I would assume it would help with copying and pasting?

"Yeah, my Samsung has it"
"Yeah, my Samsung is just like it"

Sometimes I just don't understand these people.

I'm still not sure if I will upgrade to this phone, maybe not, since I already have a 6 Plus, and it is still fast and the battery life is still really great.

I'm excited for 3D touch. I agree with the people that say that after we use it for a small amount of time, we won't want to get on without it. Same thing happened with the multi touch trackpad on my MacBook pro I got in 2008. At first, solid 'meh'. After 1 day, never liked using a different laptop.

Also, it doesn't have to be a tap-hold-drag thing, it can be super fast and you don't have to awkwardly 'press-hold-drag-let go' to select when on the home screen. They did it slow for demo purposes. It works quite instantly.
