As someone who has only ever owned iPhones, is OLED really that much better than LCD?

As someone who has only ever owned radios, is having a picture on your TV really that much better?

As someone who has only ever owned a black and white TV, is color really that much better?

As someone who has only ever owned a horse and buggy, is a car really that much better?

Seriously, just go into the store and put a Galaxy S8 (or even find an ancient Galaxy S4) and put it next to an iPhone 7. You'll never call the iPhone 7 a premium phone again.

Yes, everything should be at cost. Wait why are there no more businesses?

It's technical innovation. Apple was buying old tech at clearance table prices while adding to their margins. Had they switched to OLED years ago when other premium phones did, it would have been cost for cost the same screen price. They were just going with cheap screens then. Now that they're grabbing a higher margin selling old tech, they should boost the price to move to something a bit more up to date?

Do you really think that's still the case nowadays, I think people aren't that stupid anymore and don't fall for this "kind of marketing 101".
9.99-99.99-999 is so what.... yesteryear.

Example, here you can buy 3 small cases of beer for €10 instead of €9.99 or a big case (Different brand) for €10.70 instead of € 10.99.

I'm not an expert but I totally believe it's still the case or you wouldn't see so many retailers still doing it. Human nature is human nature. I doubt most people who post here fall for crap like that but I certainly believe a majority of the general public, or at least a good chunk of them, does.

Think about it for a minute. You have people left and right still falling for all kinds of dumb scams from a person who clearly isn't a native English speaker calling you and demanding you pay hundreds of dollars with a credit card to settle an IRS debt to people who fall for scams involving being promised a big payday if you'll only wire a small down payment overseas in order to collect a big payout afterwards. People fall for this stuff everyday.

So you are telling me it might cost above the other models because it will get all those special features!

I think Keysofanxiety already made that clear. If the iPhone 8 is going to have all those new features that he listed, do you really think it's going to cost less than $1000? Absolutely not. That's not even including which storage base somebody chooses aside from all those new features.

Of course Apple is naturally going to have the iPhone priced to offset the cost of all these new features. Their company to make a profit, not charge "At cost" to produce this new model.

Hmm yes and no, I've had the Note 5 twice, and I had a PS Vita, and with OLED you do get richer colours that pop more, but I wouldn't necessarily claim they are better? I would have an OLED TV if I could afford a nice one as they are much better at handling black levels in the picture, the details are lost so much. But you don't really notice that on a 5 to 6" screen.

I'd say go to a store and play with an S8 demo and see for yourself, their is a difference, weather it's better or nor I guess can be personal preference. I don't think it's better then the iPhone 7 screen for instance.

Do people actually use 3D touch that much? I personally wish it would go away. Some things have 3D touch. Others don't but you have no idea.

All the time, want to call a contact quickly, use 3D Touch, same with enterring a new calendar entry, to move the cursor around the text box on the screen. Most people don't use it as they never bother to see what it does. It offers tons of shortcuts, tons.

For a gimmick feature. Wow.

Here's hoping they never add 3D Touch to an SE phone. I'd gladly pay less and skip that feature.
Force touch can be turned off on supported devices. And system will change behavior accordingly. You can do the same.

It's a privilege to pay for the best experience.

That's right. It is. Because when you pay a premium for certain product, it's an exchange for receiving a piece of hardware that is well-made, lasts and is supported.

I have expectations where if I pay for something for a high dollar amount, I expect it tonbe a product that will meet my standards in terms of being efficient and productive. Apples always deliver to my experiences and you truly get what you pay for in the consumer electronic market.

Couldn't agree more. I might be alone but after having some seat time in the s8, I found it not living up to some of the hype to say the least. But I like my iPhone...

The hike in price is said to be down to the fact that, in contrast to LCD screens, OLED displays require a separate protective glass bonding on both the front and rear of the panel before the 3D Touch sensors can be applied.

Some main reasons to use flexible OLEDs over LCDs, include not requiring glass layers which add to fragility, light degradation, and overall device weight and thickness.

And yet Apple is having to add back glass layers just for 3DT.

Until they figure out a different sensing method, it seems like two steps forward, one step back.

A net positive isn't bad by any means.:)

Yeah but will it refund me the money when I disable it? I'd rather not have it in there in the first place. Also, have you seen the size of the haptic engine component? It's huge. Total waste of space for a gimmick feature.

Apparently you've never used it on the keyboard.
That feature is nice, but it could be implemented just as easily with a long press with little workflow slowdown. I use 3D touch on the keyboard, and to clear all notifications. That's it, and both could be long presses. I've found it to be largely useless, and would gladly trade it to offset the OLED screen cost. It's not worth whatever cost it's adding to the device today, let alone 150% more when paired with OLED, IMO.

They lower the cost on this year's model when next year's model comes out.
You're right, that is the only time. But, who wants last years model for $100 when you can get this years model? Oh, people who don't care about this year's model. My point was, that during the year that the new model is out, you will never see APPLE lower the price of it. PERIOD. END OF STORY. You want a discount, go to BestBuy, get a gift card, you want it free, go to AT&T or Verizon, or any other provider, but you don't get it free, you have to pay for it in your bill each month and they will give you the money back, each month. So, while free, you are stuck until the phone is paid off.
