wow I'm so glad i didn't get a white one. and the dirt is so noticeable in the seam around the sim tray. my black iPhone is crack free. only a few scratches

When I got my 8GB, the home button didn't work out of the box. I took it in for an exchange and as I was walking out with the exchange, I noticed what looked like a couple of long, thin, bubbles on it. I asked them to exchange that which they begrudgingly did. I guess the molding process is having problems. My current 8GB is fine (for now).

I just thought I would add to this. I just looked at my phone (which stays in a silicone case all of the time), and I noticed that I have 3 clusters of about 2-4 cracks each. Wow, I wonder what happened, but I probably won't get it fixed until later on.

I, too, would have problems with the 3G iPhone, my 1st gen has fallen so many times that the metal is dented and separating from the body in a few spots; I'm sure the plastic would be broken by now.

Still, I'll buy 3G in a couple of months :D.

fwiw

My White one has no cracks, none I can see with the naked eye - and somehow I'm just not that concerned to take a magnifying lens of any sort to hunting for one. From the photos it looks like they would become obvious pretty quickly.

I typically carry it in a shirt pocket (no pocket protector though, but I do wear glasses).

I agree that the cracks are unacceptable - regardless of the treatment - by the way - my job gave me a new blackberry about the same time I got my iphone - and that keyboard makes me feel like fred flintstone... could they make it any more cluttered? It doesn't have any cracks yet either... scratched up like crazy - but no cracks. Every day I catch myself trying to touch the screen to navigate and respond to messages...

It could have something to do with production times maybe? Like mine is 28 week white iPhone with no cracks at all... even after my phone took a tumble last night when part of my computer table (the part holding the keyboard) fell off. I've inspected it all over and found no scratches or cracks.

I think it definitely could. I thought all along that this is probably a bad batch. I have a week 28 model # MB499LL 16GB White iPhone, and I keep looking but am not finding any cracks at all. In fact it looks as good as it did the day I bought it. I think that even though the problem looks big in this post, and for the affected people it is, the problem is limited. Apple has sold over a million of these in the first weekend. If all the phones had this problem, we'd be seeing a million complaints. Just a guess though.

Reminds me of an issue with a Gateway/eMachine laptop I had. They had an issue of developing cracks around the hinge for the LCD, happened twice. Something as simple as a screw being too tight was eventually causing the problem. Pictures all over the internet, just like the pics of these iPhones.

I think Apple might be doing something with the 16Gb whites here in the UK, Ever since this problem has been made clear to apple (about 2 weeks ago) the availability of White IPhones has gone from a little to nill. I was speaking to a rep from o2, and he was saying to me that they havent received hardly any White Iphones over the past 2 weeks. Prior to that, they were getting some in, but now there seems to be none coming into the system.

I don't no what they quantity issue is like over in the states, but maybe Apple is trying to do some last minute changes if you no what i mean.

Thanks,
N

16 GB White iPhone Cracks

Mine (white 16 GB) has had a few cracks since new out of the box, between the sleep switch and the steel bezel and a few very minute chips where the steel bezel meets the white plastic. I just chalked it up to maybe poor tolerances on first run manufacturing, but I have since noticed very small, almost imperceptible cracks between the headphone port and the steel bezel.

If it gets worse, I will set an appointment with the genius bar.

16GB black iPhone WITH cracks

I would have never checked for the cracks, but after reading this thread I checked my 16GB black phone and have noticed cracks.

1. There's a crack around the power button that's noticable when a light shines on it.
2. There are numerous tiny cracks around the circular area where the camera lens is at. Again, you have to look real close and have the light reflect off of it, but it's there. They are about a quarter of an inch long!

I think I'll wait a bit to see if they get worse. The area around the camera lens look like it will get much worse after some time.

I will try to post pics up when I get the chance.

These white iPhone cracks remind me A LOT of the cracks that quickly appeared near the hinge of my MacBook (see below). My MacBook cracks appeared within a few weeks of buying my MB (after simply carrying it around in my bag), but they never got any worse over the next 2 years. The cracks seem to be tiny hairline stress fractures. Disappointing to see so many new iPhones with this problem - I have a feeling that a lot of people will experience this problem.

Week 30, purchased July 28th.

Same Model #, not the first production week, one bought on launch day, one bought this week....no cracks on either. I think we may be onto something. Looks like if it is indeed a bad batch, that it is in the first production weeks (before week 28). Are all the people experiencing the cracks owners of phones built before week 28?

Wow, I feel bad ...I think this is the one of most horrible thing that could happened ... you wait in line for few hours, you get this thing even though you didn't really liked it and now this ... what else can possible go wrong ?

iPhone ver 1 vs iPhone 3G ver 1

A problem is discovered with the new 3G iPhone and people are so quick to jump out and say:

"I'm glad I stayed my aluminum original iPhone!"

I am. :D
"Who needs 3G anyway!"

I don't. :p
"At least this metal backing won't crack!"

That's right.

I think those people are just trying to make themselves feel better because they have the older phone. You know darn well if there was a 1:1 swap from Apple you'd do it in a heartbeat.

I wouldn't. :)

I watched for the 3G iPhone with baited breath just like everyone else, and if there were improvements in it beyond what I've already had for a year, I would have gone for it. In my opinion, they aren't there. I like the smooth silver finish on the back of my iPhone. It still looks brand new after all this time. I like how it lays flat on a table. To be honest, I think it looks "professional" compared to the black and white ones.

I also have been reading the various threads out on the Internet regarding 3G failure on many of the new iPhones worldwide to the point where folks are just turning off 3G in order to not have their calls dropped. You won't catch me paying MORE to a cell phone service for 3G coverage and NOT be able to take full 7/24 advantage of it. Now there seems to be other flaws, such as these supposed "cracks" in the plastic back (which look more like the color treatment spreading apart rather than cracks you can feel.)

I'll wait for iPhone 3G ver.2, thank you. In the meantime, I feel I have a new iPhone anyway with the 2.0 update. AND my rate plan stays the same...and is reliable and robust. For myself and others like me, why bother changing? Glad I was smart enough not to run out and sell my first gen. iPhone - I hear, because of the 3G problems that a certain sub-section of the new ones are encountering, that my first gen. iPhone has become a much sought-after commodity.

Another reason why the 2G iphone rocks!

SOOOO happy i stuck with my aluminum back first generation iphone! I knew the plastic back would crack. Thank god i didnt get it, being a neat freak especially with gadgets- the slightest crack/scratch would bother the crap out of me! Im waiting for the next iphone, hoping it will have a front camera and totally different design and what not. good luck with those cracks guys..

hahah crack kills! lol sorry i just had to! :D

Same Plastic used on Macbooks..Very Common

What does Apple expect? This is the same plastic material used on the white Macbooks. I have one and recently took it in to Apple to get a hairline crack exactly like this replaced. The Apple store said it was very common among the Macbooks. :apple:

^^^ agreed who needs 3g?

i rather wait for a completely different iphone.... and who needs the 30 a month without text messaging! thats crazyyyy

i also have a mb499ll and no cracks so far, it was a replacement for my other white iphone because the bezel was way off from the plastic and so is this replacement. im going to keep taking it back until i get a perfect one

cracks in asia models as well??

i'm wondering if this is happening in asia as well? can anyone who bought one in asia comment on this crack problem? i am on the 3HK waiting list but might wait till this problem is solved.

I've noticed a small crack between the headphone jack and the chrome bezel (the thinnest part of the plastic back) on my less than 1 week old Black... Honestly not too worried about it as long as I don't get others that I can see without a bright flashlight.

Maybe the fact that your phone is wet ? If it was winter i'd say it was due to freeze thaw action. :D
