Hmm mine doesn't have any cracks. Its a week 49 model but i'm starting to get worried now as a lot of people seem to have problems

What a load of crap on Apple's part.
I have cracks right next to the dock connector. How can you get "compression cracks" in there? you put the iphone standing on your table then put a load of books on top of your iphone?

sounds like a pretty bad excuse.

:(

So like I mentioned in my earlier posts: I didn't have any cracks and then I did, etc.

So I took into my local AS last night and saw a Genius. Right off the bat he looked at it and said "we'll get you a new one". I was like cool, thats what I was hoping for as the crack that I had, started to seperate the bezel from the plastic. If I left the crack much longer, the back may actually have come off.

Anyways, Genius A starts to fill out my info and ask me a few questions. A few minutes go by and grabs a replacement iPhone (smaller white box) and asks another Genuis how to do something on one of the screens. Genuis B repsonds with:

"oh, are you replacing that phone due to cracking of the plastic?"

"yes, I am" said Genuis A.

"well, we stopped replacing those under warranty 2 weeks ago. Apple launched an investigation and determined that the cracks were caused by compression and that they were no longer going to issue replacements" said Genuis B

However, since Genuis A said I was going to get a replacement initially, he honored his word and issued it -- I was out of there within 5 minutes. If this didn't happen, I would have been upset and put up more of a stink.

So this was in Portland, ME -- apparently I got the last replacement due to cracking.

I'm going to make up some crap and get them to replace mine one I get close to the year mark.

I think the same, load of bull....

just tell them that the battery dies within 2 hours or something like that. they will replace it if the battery is not working properly.

but that's risky. They can easily test the battery to see if that's true.
(tho I don't think they will..)

Maybe, but when I returned my first 3G all I told them (and this was true), was that the battery would be dead after only a half days use -- and not heavy using either. The Genius asked a few questions and then gave me a new one.

Just a thought, but I am not saying in anyway that someone should try and scam Apple. I think that the cracks will speak for themselves.

I'll say something about the earpiece and people hearing me. They replaced my first one for home button issues w/out hassle.

Broken

Its really no big deal just take it in the apple store and get a new one! if you take it in because it is not your fault they will have no problem giving you a new one. I've had mine since july 11th! but they crack about every 2 months so i have had 3 since then and im about to get another one because the one i have now has a crack!

thats not what they told me, but I think its worth a shot either way. the worst that can happen is that they will say beat it.

I just got my black 8GB handset replaced today, which I have had since launch day.

The genius took one look at the crack on the back of it, and straight way agreed to change it for me. He even went and showed it to his colleagues, as he hadn't seen one crack this way before.

There was absolutely no mention of Apple having said they were stopping exchanging cracked handsets.

well, that worked out well for you then. just another example of how Apple stores are NOT created equal.

That's just retarded!

Not you but the fact that you're going in to get your 4th iPhone due to cracks!

That's ridiculous!

they replaced my 3G last week because of a crack on the ringer switch between the switch and the chrome no questions asked. :)

i did have to replace the replacement since it had a light leak, though i had to yell at the genius who was embarrassed cuz a teenager was yelling at him :p

Im surprised yelling got you anywhere, because it usually doesn't. If you had started yelling at me, you would have been asked to leave.

Don't yell...be nice and you will get more. But then again, I dont expect a "teenager" to understand this just yet.

It sounds like lots of you have had problems with this - is it just the white one or just more noticeable? I have the black 16g and was thinking of replacing with the white but I know my head would be done in if it kept cracking or showing marks. Should I stay with the black?

Go with the one you think looks better.

If it cracks, take it back.

Just had Apple replace mine. I had 3 cracks, 1 by the headphone jack, 1 by the ringer switch and 1 on the dock connector. The Genius looked at it and told me the ringer one was really bad, it was cracked and raised about 2 mm. I was out the door with a new one in under 10 minutes. :apple:

I've noticed this problem a couple of months after the phones first came out... Didnt decide to do anything about it until now...

For the most part, it wasn't noticeable unless you really put your eyes on the thin parts of the housing (MANY hairline 'fractures' by all the holes/buttons, etc) But there were definite CRACKS near the headphone jack, camera and dock connector.

So I went in for my Genius Bar appointment on Monday night, told him my situation, and the "genius" immediately pulls out a magnifying glass, a mini flashlight and a cloth... runs his finger nails up and down the sides of the phone, proceeds with blowing an air can on the fractures, and continues fondling my phone for about 10 more minutes, actually feeling the noticible cracks near the headphone jack, camera and dock connector,... and he's going back and forth with fellow Geniuses, and then he comes back to me with "these are just minor scratches" and "it must be your protective case" and "we've never heard of this problem happening before"

Funny how they never heard about it before, yet he's fully prepared with magnifying glasses and micro flashlights and knew exactly where to look.

I told them it was a common problem and they refused any further help...

That blows dude. I noticed that the Genius checked out mine with a cloth and flashlight as well -- clearly making sure there was no water damage.

If possible, try taking it to another store. From this thread alone, we can see that all stores are not created equal.
