Im going in on Monday to replace a crack near my headphone jack. Funny thing is I never use the jack because I have the iPod adapter for my car. We will see what happens.

well guys, i will be visiting the apple store tonight at 8:20pm pacific time, so i will let you all know what they say..

i have not dropped my phone and it has never came in contact with any water,

i have however taken it in the bathroom with me when im taking a shower to listen to... (btw anyone know if the indicator is still at the bottom of the headphone jack, mines a white/silver cirle with a black line through it ::could be a thread down there:: )

im currently restoring my phone in itunes , unjailbreaking it :p

the store that i had went to (rancho cucumanga, CA) they exchanged the phone for me, the guy was very nice and just had me sign saying i was getting a replacement. so :p yay

So I was just now cleaning my black 16 GB, when I noticed a crack by the silent switch, and the volume rocker. It looks a bit different from the ones I've seen in this thread, but I'm positive that it is a crack. This iPhone has been in a case since day one, and now this! I haven't even dropped it in the case! Do you guys think that Apple will replace my iPhone?

My White 16GB has recently developed a crack between the volume-up and the chrome bezel. It catches my finger occasionally because its slightly raised. I'll probably take it in to be replaced.

My question is this - since cracks like these are far more easily seen on the white phones than the black ones, have Apple stores/geniuses been willing to replace a white phone with a black one, or are replacements strictly color-for-color?

I've heard of a few people getting a different color replacement. Your best bet is to go and try since people seem to get mixed results depending on their store.

Overlooking

One thing everyone is overlooking is that these cracks are not only cosmetic but they are expossing the inside of your iphone to the elements. This is in fact the larger problem here. Vanity be dammed your warranty will be screwed.

Yeah because the "elements" can't get in through the headphone jack, the dock connector jack, the rocker switches, the power switch, or the ringer switch.

Here I am again...
I got my iPhone 3G replaced back in December due to cracking, now my replacement is starting to crack too. Agh! They aren't too visible yet, but I'll get back to you all in a month or two when they turn black.

If I get this one replaced, I will have had 5 different iPhones.

At least Apple will replace yours.

Yeah, it always makes me laugh when people say "I'm not getting white because I don't want my iPhone to crack"... hehehehe.

My black 3G was replaced cause of a crack near silencer. I went one day to see if they would do anything and a genius said yes. Brought it back a week later after dropping and causing screen to scratch and got new one. Yay!

Same, I'm also on my 5th White iPhone and it's beginning to crack which will put me on my 6th. I may ask for a black phone since the cracks are far less noticeable.

crazy to see all of these pics with cracked iPhone's....

I've had my (first) white 3G for a few months now, never dropped, & never been in a case. Always kept in my pants pocket, on my desk, and on the carpet near my bed (yeah, my mattress is on the floor). The funny thing is I am always rubbing up on things with my leg, and sometimes it gets in the middle...still no cracks :D

knock on wood....

I have personally gone through 4 iphone 3g (white) b/c of the cracks but to be honest... I don't mind. Apple is great about replacing my phone:apple:

I wish I could get Apple to replace mine. After I showed the genius, this thread, he said that it wasn't crack, but a gouge that dust had caused, because I keep it in a case. I clean the phone twice a day. There is no way that a "gouge" that deep could be caused by dust in less then 24 hours. It looked like a scratch Friday night, then on Saturday morning it had expanded into a large crack, which the Genius insists is a gouge.

At the Maine Apple Store they said that this couldn't be done... but all are different.

Talk about OCD

I don't take a microscope to every electronic item I own like you do apparently

Hmm. My point is that its cracking again and is only going to get worse.
And it was a Sony Cybershot T200. :p

I think it varies by store. The guy who helped me last time asked if I wanted a black one instead.

I have a black iphone that has a crack by the mute switch. You guys are lucky to have a genius bar. The last time I was able to use my iphone was the 30th of december. Since then, I've been in discussion with T-mobile about replacing it. They're trying to blame me for the damage.

If I'm lucky, the last letter I sent will convince them to replace the iphone. But I'm extremely disappointed in Apple for taking no responsibility for their design flaw and letting mobile providers do their dirty work.

In the meantime, I'm using an old nokia 3160i I borrowed. That thing has had coffee spilt on it, its been kicked, dropped, sat on- did i mention that it's 3.5 years old and still works like new? Why doesn't that one have cracks in the casing?

Don't get me wrong, I really love the iphone 3G, but if I had known what I was getting myself into I would have NEVER bought one.

How is T-Mobile responsible for your AT&T iPhone?
