I have had my iPhone for over 5 months and it hasn't cracked at all. I do have the black one though so maybe I can't see it?

sorry i didn't read through all 50 pages to try and find an answer to this, but i just noticed the crack in my black iphone that is 6 months old. will i be able to return it and get a replacement, or will they make me buy a new one?

I'm in the same situation....again.... My phone needs to be returned for other problems anyway, but I noticed this the other day. Funny thing is I think it may be coming from the iPhone dock. The crack on mine is right next to the dock connector. Does anyone think leaving the phone in the dock will cause cracks??

It's possible but not likely. From my understanding the cracks are caused by compression and I don't think the dock squeezes the phone.

I have the same problem, black iphone with cracking next to the dock connector. And I mostly use the dock too.

I think the compression "explanation" is ******** from Apple.

Remember the white macbooks?
The plastic used to crack exactly where the plastic pieces from the LCD touched the palmrest area. Yeah, the cracks were caused by compression FROM THE SCREEN but the real issue was that there wasn't real support for the plastic underneath, resulting in plastic breaking.

Is there some way to know if they changed the thickness or material of the plastic at some point? Someone must be noticing this over at apple if people are continuing to exchange their cracked iphones for new ones...

So nobody has to read 50 pages about cracks in iPhone plastic...

I noticed I had some very small cracks in mine by the silence switch. I bought my phone the day it was released. After reading this thread I made an appointment with a Mac Genius.

He looked at it today and ran some "tests" checked out the phone. He asked me a few questions about if I had dropped it, kept it in my back pocket etc. Then started to tell me it was just "cosmetic" and that he recommends I keep it... and after a pause ...he then told me he could replace it for FREE if that's what I wanted.

He went behind the Genius bar and grabbed a new iPhone from a stock for of what looked like replacement iPhone specifically for this type of situation. I signed some papers and I walked out with a brand spanking new iPhone.

I think they are told to try to get us to NOT replace them.
Obviously Apple is well aware of the problem and have a replacement procedure.

This was in Portland OR.
I did not buy apple care when I bought the phone.

Good luck everyone. P.S. I am very happy with the service Apple has provided! Its great they are replacing them.

Are the cracks still a prevalent problem?

I got my white iphone shortly after release...and when I went to plug the headphones in, I guess the new pressure in that area caused a crack in the plastic between the headphone jack and the crome bezel. Later I noticed a crack next to the silence switch.

These aren't detrimental to the way the phone works...it just kills me to know they are there.

Just wondering...Thanks.

got my phone exchanged like 2 weeks ago, with a new one,not a refurb, week 38 though, either way, got the cracks about a week ago, if you look closer there's more than ten in that area, noticed a few good ones around the camera the day after I first noticed these, the headphone jack area's been affected as well, simtray too. There's an even thinner one almost unnoticeable that starts around the middle of the apple and end with the simtray(that's the last one). Love this plastic. Has been treated like a baby, never dropped, never felt any pressure of any kind, keeping it in my front pocket in a soft pouch.

My third iPhone has started cracking.

And like, I want a new phone or whatever (even though it'll be a refurb), but the truth is ... I'm plain old sick and tired of hitting up the friggin' Apple Store for crap like this.

Should I hold onto it for a while and see if it gets worse? Should I just make another damn appointment and go downtown?

I am with ya, constantly replacing faulty phones is a pain.

But yes, I would switch it out. I am going to be unhappy if my 3rd one cracks.

Well if you hold onto it and anything else happens you'd be SOL, so if you don't like it I suggest you exchange it before you get anything else that they could reject your warranty for.

Thanks the input folks. Yeah, I guess I'll suck it up and head down there soon.

It's a shame cause I like (liked?) everything about this phone, before the cracking started. The screen is nice and level (the problem with the first phone), no rough edges and corners or chipped, malformed chrome (the problem with the second phone) and all that.

Honestly, I'm a little nervous about taking it back :( - that's kinda why I thought of waiting. Maybe they'll tweak the manufacturing process or something?

Just wonderig how much success people in the uk have had getting replacements in the last couple of months?

My problem is I live in Newcastle and closest store is Manchester 3 hours away, I don't want to drive all that way and not get a replacement. My crack is pretty big across the silencer button.

I called apple Manchester and they said I would have to take it in to be seen.

Don't know what to do :s

Here's the crack:

Dock mine every night for about 8 hours and I dont have any cracks.. so doubtful, but maybe... Bought mine opening day as well.

Props to you for keeping such a cool attitude about it. If I had to pack up and "schedule" a third trip to the Apple store I'd be pretty pissed and demand an explanation.

But I guess if they don't think twice and give you a new one then that's cool and all but I'd still have to ask someone to give me an explanation as to if Apple has a solution in the works. Of course they probably wouldn't have a clue.

This is costing people Time, Gas in the car and Money. Hell, atleast maybe on your third trip, throw in a free case or headphones for any inconveniences.

I just scheduled an appointment for monday at the Pioneer Place store since mine has a crack all the way thru the plastic at the silence switch and another begining on the other end of that switch (that would eventually leave a missing chunk of plastic) and came out of the box last summer with a crack at the headphone jack.
Also has the hairline cracks along the volume switch and some other places that you can see in the right light, but not really a concern.

Here's my contribution. I baby my iPhone, dressing it up in plastic, silicone, and leather. It's never been dropped. I just noticed it this afternoon and Rogers said they would send a new one out to me. Should I be concerned about receiving a refurbished one? Is there a difference? How can one tell? Would I be better off exchanging it at an Apple store?
Thanks for your time,
Mick

Well, I just took my cracking (already refurbished from another physical defect) iPhone down to the Apple store today and they gave me yet another 'new' refurb phone. So that's good, if not still a little annoying.

BUT

I must say ... this is the best iPhone I've had yet. No rough edge, or uneven glass, or weird screen issues or anything. So far, I must say I'm pretty happy with it. Hopefully this is my last iPhone, and I can just own it for years without having to think about weird random physical problems.

Here's my experience from taking my cracked white iphone into the Apple store at Pioneer Place in Portland, OR today...
The genius girl found all the cracks I knew of plus a couple other very minor ones I didn't notice. She then turned to the guy next to her and said to me that they would need to check to see what the policy was. I said I know of others that recently were given replacements at that store with phones that had less significant cracks than the ones I had (a crack all the way thru at the headphone jack, the silent switch and at the dock connector and multiple others that appear to be about 1/2 way thru the plastic and dozens of the ones that appear to just be in the clearcoat type finish.
She then said their current policy is not to replace for cracks, but if you know of others having been replaced they would honor that.
Additionally, the guy next to me was having his replaced for case issues also, and the genius helping him (why does that always sound sarcastic?) told him the iphone replacements are not refurbs but brand new stock packaged specifically for service replacements (I did notice my new one has a different formatted serial number though).
