But? Apple announced the iPhone in January so it could get FCC approval by June, wouldn't a 3G version have to go though the same hurdles?

Also, 3G isn't that widespread in rural areas, so, for me and millions of others, who cares...

because iPhone sales in Europe where 3G is widespread have been mediocre and in many markets in Asia, which has potential for a lot of sales, a non-3G phone just doesn't exist.

Why the heck do all the analysts keep saying they believe the next iPhone will have 3G, as if its a prediction? STEVE JOBS AND AT&T'S CEO ALREADY SAID IT THEMSELVES! And they said it would be this year! What kind of news is this?

Mediocre?

O2 said it was their fastest selling phone ever. It also dramatically has more web usage on average than any other handset. Yes 3G is more widespread in the key European markets than the States, but the idea that many people are actually using these handsets to browse extensively is an absolute myth.

krafty, i too have verizon. fortunately, i did not grab a new every 2 phone so i am out of contract, waiting for iphone next gen.

here is my issue: T-mobile offers a perk: 5 friends anywhere. ATT offers a perk: rollover minutes. (i hope the service is good).

my friend, what does verizon "give" us to keep us as customers? is their service that much better to justify no perks?

at least ATT and T-mobile help you believe that it is not all about them.

Ditto on having Verizon and them offering nothing. I've been out of contract for a few months now. My birthday is the day of the keynote. So here's hoping!

I agree ...

The only thing is to gues when and what kind of additional features ..

I´m guesing the 3G iPhone will have
FrontSide Camera (iChat Video / and a iChat app for MS Windows)
MobilePhotoBoth
MobileiChatAV
802.11n

as Apple have stated they have reinvented the phone I se no reason why they wont "reinvtent" the Mobile Video Chat aswell ...

I´m guesing desktop class Video chat on you phone and with multiply video chat user stream ... as its avaible on the Mac today ...

and when using the frontSide camera in MobilePhotoBoth the screen will flash white as it does on the mac when you take photos ...

This is the same convo, over, and over. the iphone will be announced at WWDC probably, buuuttttt it will not be released in the fall. Why? cause why would they announce it and not release it and take away from sales of the current iPhone. I'm sorry, but I've heard Fall so many times that it angers me. If it IS going to be released in the Fall, we will not know anything about it until the day it is released. Its just not a good bussiness plan. I do think it's coming sooner rather then later too. Edge isn't worth my time, if I get lost I am basicly screwed if I am not in a WiFi zone. Anyway, the fact that they are running low could also play factor on release date, and the fact that last year Steve said they were working on a 3G iPhone, and the fact that Japan only uses 3G and I am sure Apple wants to get in on the Japan market. To say he will announce in June and release in Fall is just plain stupidity, it would have worked if there wasn't already an iPhone on the market. It's coming soon guys, and all you good little boys and girls who wait will be very happily rewarded!

can't they just do it as a revision, and carry over the fcc certification?

I am guessing that the new iPhone will be unveiled in June during WWDC, shipping in September (or something like that). The timing will make sense since Apple can push for Christmas sales, kind of like the iPods. Also, Apple usually does not go to a new software version unless they are also releasing new hardware alongside. Steve already announced that version 2.0 will be released in June and I expect that it will be coupled with a new iPhone.

And I know... Apple TV version 2.0 is a different story. :)

I seriously doubt that they'd announce it in June and not release it for sale until September. Why? Because iPhone sales would absolutely plummet immediately following the announcement. Who's going to be an EDGE iPhone with 16 GB of storage when you can wait 2 or 3 months and get a 3G one with 32 GB (probably) for likely the same price and it's based on official product announcements, not speculation?

When was the last time that Apple updated a product and then waited to sell it? Every iMac, MacBook, MBP, Mac Pro, etc update has gone on sale immediately. Every iPod update has gone on sale immediately. The 16 GB iPhone went on sale immediately. Only the iPod Touch and iPhone didn't, which they could afford to do because there wasn't a version of those already out.

If by "service" you mean "better coverage," the yes. When I had Verizon and my wife had T-Mobile, I had coverage in many areas (rural, Hawaii, etc.) where she didn't. Now she has an iPhone and I have her pink (fuscia?) RAZR....I would say I am probably more eager for the iPhone update than most of you......!

And what will happen in between July and September. Will Apple completely pull away the iPhone from the World for about 2 complete months?!

This kind of stuff usually doesn't happen!

The next iPhone could be exactly like this one and add 3G and GPS and still be a big hit.

Along with larger capacities, of course, but that's hardly a major revision.

So this wasn't even a rumour, only speculation...

Yep! Here's a few interesting definitions:

Rumors:

a currently circulating story or report of uncertain or doubtful truth circulated as unverified

speculate |ˈspekyəˌlāt|

form a theory or conjecture about a subject without firm evidence :

Mediocre?

that statement might just tell more about o2 than it does about iphone sales...

Yes 3G is more widespread in the key European markets than the States, but the idea that many people are actually using these handsets to browse extensively is an absolute myth.

it actually isn't. 3g has been taking off hugely last year, this year is going to be even better.

though you're partially right, the reason iphone sales in europe has been lacking is not (only) 3g, it's also because of the insane pricing of the plans, and all the other features iphone just doesn't have that are have benn taken for granted in the european markets for years. the analysts are sadly mistaken if they think that "just add 3g" will fixed the iphone sales.

There aren't that many living in "rural areas" - they don't drive the product and release plans.

thanks crees

in spanish, your name means "you believe." thanks for the support. BUT let's hope ATT DOES have good service.

i'll be singing happy birthday to tu!

I wouldn't say EDGE is "most similar to dial up speeds." It's considerably better than that. I know people aren't crazy about it, but it's really quite usable - while dial up is just painful.

Than as a substitue for then...

Whomever quoted Gartner and chose to use THAN rather than THEN shouldn't be a journalist. Yes this comment is petty, but if this site is to be taken seriously, perhaps an editor needs to step in and make corrections when they are overdue?

Hear we go again, foregiving or worse ...ignoring the most elementery spelling messtakes, poor baseick grammer, and missuse of homonyms simply because we're ape a thetical. Noebody kares because it don't make a differance nEway, bro. Yes we could all type as if we were 14 year old girls with our first iPhone or blackberry... OMG, LOL, Woteva, do u no wot I meen? Buttfehck that!

The editor for this site should take a bit more pride in their, not 'there', nor 'they're' ...work - sooner than later please. At least, then you'll have a reason to be proud.

As I have said in the last 10 iPhone is coming rumors, I do not think Apple will announce the update prior to is actually being available. Look at all the other updates that Apple does (MacBook Pro, MacBook, Mac Mini, etc). They don't announce them months before the update or product sales would tank. I could be wrong, but this is my guess.

or announce it and say that ordering is available but will ship in X days. This way sales wont be killed.

Another supporting article...

I thought that they already had made the iphones cause they are probably releasing them in June
how can a couple of months be enough time to start building these high tech phones!:)

...that supports my prediction and reasons that I have been making on everyone of these threads...Iphone 2 will be available in October!!!

Over what? A telephone conference? Get real. It's a big release which needs a big event. June rings a bell.

While that's possible because the WWDC will feature some iPhone app development stuff, this isn't usually the event Apple uses to release consumer level products. WWDC is usually (mac) app development focused, so new power Macs, a new Mac Mini, improvements to the development environment and Xcode are all possibilities.

I agree. Edge is quite usable, though 3G would be better. With a lot of the web apps out there taylored for the iPhone Edge is even more usable.
