I thought that they already had made the iphones cause they are probably releasing them in June
how can a couple of months be enough time to start building these high tech phones!:)

Its not. Thats why there is always a backorder when Steve first debuts a device. The asians will just make enough for the initial set of orders. Manufacturing will continue to fill the backorder as Steve makes excuses as to the delay.
Same ol story.

Great news if true - the iPhone desperately needs 3G.

However, I see a problem for Apple in the UK. In choosing to partner with O2 it has lumbered itself with the one UK network that doesn't have decent 3G coverage. D'oh!

Yesterday's rumor of an order already being placed got my hopes up. I really don't want to have to wait for September, but I can't justify the cost without 3G, especially knowing it's imminent. Oh well. Stuck with my malfunctioning Crackberry for a little longer...

Yea, me too. Only with a daily crashing RAZR. :(

I wouldn't say EDGE is "most similar to dial up speeds." It's considerably better than that. I know people aren't crazy about it, but it's really quite usable - while dial up is just painful.

agreed. yeah, it can take a while for some pages, but just being able to have the full spectrum of the internets on my phone is amazing. i have no complaints about my edge coverage. in fact, i've run loading image intensive sites on my iphone vs. a 3G phone of one of my friends from verizon and the iphone only loads a couple seconds slower. not a big deal! just one anecdotal story, but i'm completely satisfied. of course i'll upgrade to 3G sometime in the future, but it should really by no means be a total deal breaker for "to by an iphone or not to by an iphone"

more realistic deal breakers should be: no file storage, no read/write/ no copy/past, no ichat, etc. hopefully apple will add those options palm os and windows mobile and blackberry have had for years . . .

I don't think Apple will wait until fall to introduce the 3G iPhone. I'm fairly certain that it will be ready before the Beijing Olympics. Most likely the iPhone Pro 3G (or whatever), iPhone 2.0 firmware and SDK apps will be available late June/early July.

I'm really looking forward to the tremendous sales boost this combo should give the iPhone. It would be nice if they could roll out carriers for China, Japan and Korea within a three week period. The iPhone might take all the Asian countries by storm. Well, that's just my dream.:p

Mediocre?

O2 said it was their fastest selling phone ever. It also dramatically has more web usage on average than any other handset. Yes 3G is more widespread in the key European markets than the States, but the idea that many people are actually using these handsets to browse extensively is an absolute myth.

I'd have to disagree with you... there's 3 Iphones at my house and they use the web more often then my 3 macs...... my dad wont leave youtube if you pay him, he only leaves to check out news, again on the I phone, my brother is on MSN all day and now that he found meebo.com its like he's glued to it..... and me well the only thing I still use the laptop is to watch some podcasts(flash ie. diggnation, I dont like to download I prefer streaming), and when I want to type something like this....... but I'd say I use the web just as much on my iphone if not more then on my computers

There's like a 0.1% chance of that happening. Way more power usage (802.11n uses multiple antennas (MIMO)) and there would be absolutely no advantage to doing this, unless they added the ability to sync with iTunes over your wireless network. If they didn't add syncing, then there's no application that could even take full advantage of 802.11g speeds.

I am guessing that the new iPhone will be unveiled in June during WWDC, shipping in September (or something like that). The timing will make sense since Apple can push for Christmas sales, kind of like the iPods.

I agree that WWDC is the last time frame for the new iPhone to be announce. It makes sense. 1 year anniversary and enough time to release new apps using SDK.
Shipping would the immediately. Apple wants to reach 10 million mark prior to year's end so they need to reach big time folks in Europe and Asia where 3G is a must.

iPhone 3G - But when?

When do you guys think that they release the new iPhone? I've heard that this will probably be in May....but why not next Tuesday?:D:eek:

wake me up when the 3rd gen iphones hit.

edge is more than fine for me, I have wifi at home so if I really need to use the internet on my phone (like before class) edge is more than capable.

I still love my iphone and will never use another phone ever again unless apple goes out of business or stops making iphones. if you are waiting for the "2nd gen" to miss some "bugs" your missing out on the best experience and when the third gen comes out I'll get that and laugh at your 2nd gen :D

ill repeat that

iPone desperately needs 3G

They better make it for their anniversary

I desperately hope they release it April 1st.

Credit card is ready, but waiting 'til June?

I won't settle for anything less than 3G, as it is widespread in Germany and works like a charm on my Nokia.

Taken from Bank of America: 3G iPhone in June Friday, March 28th -

"Our latest channel checks point to a significant production build of a 3G iPhone
beginning in the month of June after a initial small build in May," says Scott Craig.
A separate researcher, Avi Greengart of Current Analysis, argues that the timing of the 3G phone
is meant to coincide with the iPhone 2.0 firmware due at the same time, which will primarily introduce
the ability to download and install native third-party software.

Taken from Gartner: Apple ordering massive 3G iPhone numbers Wednesday, March 26th -

Ken Dulaney says that based on talk he has heard from Asian sources,
he believes Apple has placed an order for 10 million updated iPhones, equipped with 3G broadband...
Dulaney speculates that the 3G iPhone may surmount battery concerns, expressed by the likes of Apple CEO Steve Jobs,
by switching to an OLED (organic LED) display. This may not only result in less power consumption,
but reduce the thickness of the phone even further. Dulaney further comments that Apple may have strong incentive
to switch to 3G technology as soon as possible, as the iPhone did not do as well as expected in Europe.
Unlike the United States, many European countries have had widespread 3G networks for years.

But? Apple announced the iPhone in January so it could get FCC approval by June, wouldn't a 3G version have to go though the same hurdles?

Also, 3G isn't that widespread in rural areas, so, for me and millions of others, who cares...

So for you and millions of others, you can buy an iPhone right now. For me and millions of others who live in areas with 3G, it'd be silly to buy right now. How selfish can you be? Any upgrade is a good upgrade. Just because you live in a rural area doesn't mean you won't ever travel to somewhere that has 3G.

I'm sorry, but I'm tired of all of these "who cares about 3G, I don't get it in my area" posts. There are plenty of people who do, and plenty of people who held off buying the thing simply because it lacked 3G. There are over 2 million people within twenty minutes of me, and I'm sure a lot of them would love 3G iPhones just like I would.

2.5G ≠ "dial up speeds"

I have a SonyEricsson W580i 2.5G cell phone and I consistently get between 20KB and 50KB/second -- far faster than any dial up modem.

When used as a Bluetooth modem to my MacBook Pro, I've seen continuous speeds of 75KB/second while in Houston, TX.

That being said, I'm jonesing for a 3G iPhone. :)

If Apple has let a contract to manufacture an iphone3G then seems likely that some sort of Authority testing is already on the way or done. Also is highly unlikely it will take 6 months to tool up and manufacture the beast for initial sales. IMHO June sounds about right.
Does any one know how long it takes to tool up to make a phone?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

I think it would be an incredibly idiotic move to announce a new version of the iPhone in June instead of releasing one. iPhone sales would hit an all time low, for consumers would wait for the new iteration to release. Now if, for example, apple dies announce a new version in June to be released in September (probably end of), that would be 4 months of low iPhone sales.

Jobs is smart. He would want to maximize sales as much as possible. If the new iPhone is not ready for release, I am certain that he will not mention a word about it.

It seems there are credible sources here who wouldn't risk their reputations (ie that guy at Dow Jones) by pedaling false rumours.

However if they have just been awarded the contract it will probably be some months off yet. They have to set up a production line, order the components, make the multi cavity plastic injection mould and or magnesium pressure die cast tools (unless they are already made) which would be 6 weeks at the earliest. Validate the production process, test the phones, build up launch stock etc etc.

Unless they are only just now announcing the contract which was awarded months or weeks ago it could be several months away at the earliest. I work in product development too and have some idea of how long it takes. Its not just a case of announcing an order and phones tomorrow...
