They won't keep the price point that high. Something has to give. Apple is MUCH smarter than that. Being all about the money, I think they will keep it at the same price point.

Logic:

Right now, all the iPhones are 100 dollars more than the iPod Touch for the same memory. So in theory, the 32Gb iPhone should be 599.99 since the iPod Touch 32Gb is 499.99

I hope they either keep the 8GB for $399 or better yet have a 16 that is lower in price for $399. I will have about $400 from selling my current iphone and want to use that and not much more for a new one. whatever happens next week will be interesting.

I don't think the price is bad if Unlocked. The new HTC Touch Diamond that my friend is buying cost 700 for 4Gb unlocked (I know stupid).

If they make you sign another contract with carrier then I think the 399, 499 and 599 Makes sense. This keeps the price the same and gives you new features.

Although I thought it would be really hard for apple to fit in 32Gb as it needed two slots or something like that. This could mean that Apple had to buy something more expensive to get it to fit in the new iPhone.

Just some thoughts, but I really need 32Gb for Movies as Music and Apps will not use that much space.

Unfortunately the prices sound right to me! $699 is steep but the Functionality will be out of this world! Other phones may have 3G and GPS etc but when it is implemented correctly it is effectively allowing you to replace a multitude of devices with your iPhone. That appears to be the angle taken so far and could very well continue. Steve will spell it out and sell it in such a way that it wont sound so bad!! LOL

$699 for 6 devices
Phone
iPod
High Speed Internet Device
Portable/Automobile GPS Unit
Video Communicator
32Gb Flash Drive :)

I can get all of that (minus the 32 gb....but sd-expandable) for like $79. I'll pay $399 for an iPhone and that's about it.

you can make a phone a great phone, but, it's just a phone. there's a limit how much most people are willing to spend..

Screw that pricing scheme and Where TF! is copy paste  ??

There is no way any self respecting human being would pay $800 for a "smart------- phone" that can't copy and paste text.

I would give up video conferencing to be able to download and edit Pages and other iWork documents.

If the pricing does seem true, then I'd grab that 16GB model even though the price is still quite high. The $800 for 32GB is just a bit crazy.

Plus, I am sure the iPhone won't do all those features he/she mentions that well. Nothing beats having a stand-alone product. It's nice to have it all in one handheld toy, but when it comes down to it, I won't be replacing my car's GPS module, my MBP, my video camcorder, or even my 160GB iPod Classic with an iPhone.

I am hoping Apple gets the phone bit of it down first, then starts working on improving the other things that it can do. It's still not quite a smart phone yet.

The gap of 16 GB storage in the iPod touch shows a $100 difference.

16GB iPod touch = $399
32GB iPod touch = $499

Apple holds a $100 difference between a 16GB iPod touch and a 16GB iPhone, $100 for the phone. 32GB iPod touch $499 32GB iPhone $599.

I agree with you. I just hope the cost of 32GB flash doesn't prove it incorrect. As long as they release a 32GB now and don't wait on that till Christmas, I will be OBSCENELY HAPPY. I do not want to be denied next week and forced to get only 16GB then have to upgrade again to 32GB at the holidays! I don't care what it costs, I want 32GB NOW :D

I would like you to outline exactly how you can do that by getting what and for what prices!!!!

what about price cuts to the ipod touch?

ipod touch
16 GB - 299
32 GB - 399

iphone

8 GB - 299 (low end model, maybe even lower in price)
16 GB - 399
32 GB - 499

?

think people, think!

MacRumors has heard some unconfirmed whispers about the 3G capable iPhone due at next week's WWDC. Besides 3G support, the following features/specs were also passed along, mostly consistent with circulating rumors:

- Lighter weight
- Black + other colors
- Focus on Multimedia with Video recording
- Video Conferencing
- GPS
- 16GB $499
- 32GB $699
As with all pre-release specs, confirmation can be difficult and intentional misinformation may be common, so we provide it for interest alone. If released exactly as described, this would eliminate the $399 8GB iPhone, keep the $499 16GB and add a $699 32GB model. This, however, does not necessarily preclude the possibility of a low end iPhone suggested by Kevin Rose in an rumor earlier today.

WWDC kicks off on June 9th with a keynote address by Steve Jobs.

You know what I think, people? I think we're overlooking THE most important issue: battery life! All the glitz, glamour and high tech features in the world that the 2nd gen iPhone will surely bring next week won't do you a damned bit of good if Apple hasn't improved the battery life DRASTICALLY -- especially when you consider the battery is not user-replaceable!

That said, a $499 entry price point is excellent! Speaking for all we Apple elitists I'd say such a move would prevent the iPhone from suffering the same demise as the Moto Razr -- and that debacle involved making it so affordable that every Tom, Dick and Harry had the same freakin' phone everywhere you looked! A $499 and up price-to-play -- with no freakin' subsidies or discounts, of course -- would protect the clout of exclusivity that we cherish so very very dearly.

I'm also hoping that Apple doesn't wimp out and appease all the homosexuals and girlie-types by issuing it in a bunch of cheesy, fruity-flavored pastel colors 'n crap...UNLESS they maintain the same brushed aluminum material/finish. Even then i think it's an unnecessary and wasteful move. So if the dragqueens of the world want fruit that's what covers and cases are for!!

I'd pay $699 for an aluminum 32GB iPhone with true GPS functionality (not some gimmicky 3rd party app) and a front-facing video camera in a heartbeat!

Oh yea, i see what you mean-- 'cause the current phone TOTALLY FAILS as a phone.

(where are you coming from on this?)

I think it would nice to know whether Apple with price the phone competitively at $399, make the same mistake it did last time and drop the price from $599 to $399 in 3 months, or be smart and keep it at $599?

I actually called Apple cause I returned my phone and now I have some crappy phone and can't wait for the 3g iPhone, I keep asking them for updates. The stuff I posted is all true. Apple reps said "They only know as much as what we know." And according to what they said all the above is true according to their rumors. Apple is also curios as well as we are about the new iphone *Cough* BS. I truly think they know. But just letting yall know. They said that 2.0 for iPhone will come out in late June. The new iPhone will be out in ate June also. Or maybe after WWDC.
If ya don't believe me Call them up. 1(800)myapple | 1(800)6927753.

LOL, I'm sorry, just had to comment on this. I work for Apple (yes I know, I am probably going to get a knock on my door in 5 minutes) and we honestly don't know anything.

You would think we'd be let in on little secrets or basic things, but we aren't. I'd come here first for iPhone rumors than to go to work. I think Apple employees should be honest with customers and not lead them on. I can tell you for a fact, we honestly don't know anything, whatever is on apple.com or whatever has come from El Jobso's mouth is what we know.

I think they will price it competitive at $399, they know the demand is there at that price and I don't see them going back up in pricing.

Rumor is and maybe true.. The 2nd gen iPhone a.k.a. 3G iPhone will have a solarpower screen.. makes sense since Apple paten the cell thing, and also Jobs has bin complaining and was stated when the iPhone first came out "There was no 3G because the battery life wouldn't hold" more then likely there will be a solar powered screen. + I trust Apple a lot. They never made crappy products and as I have heard from many rumored sights the battery life actually lasts longer then the edge iPhone. So I wouldn't really get mad about that. P.s. Just hope for the best....

I vote same prices if not less. If you think about it the price to make a ps3 is way more that they actually sell it. They make more money on software. Now that we have an App store in which apple makes a profit off of every single sale (minus free) they can afford to lower the price point to make the phone more attractive. Plus when you factor in contract supplements its a no brainer.

THANK YOU!

There is no way in hell Apple could see 10,000,000 units at $699 or even $599. They are going to have to do something else. Maybe push apps as a way to recoup cash, get more $ from ATT or something else. Most people will buy when it's around the price of other smart phones. I know for me, I won't touch it, unless I can get something greater than 8gb for less than $250 - it just won't happen. I have a feeling I'm in the same boat with A LOT of other people.

I don't care what features it has and how it can replace all my other technology. I don't need to shell out $699-$499 at a time for them. (Except my laptop.)

Well see what happens at WWDC. I know 200 bucks is the sweet spot for lots of others.

Ya got a point there.. Its just weird that like people from Apple store online actually told me all this. I also talked to a Apple rep and they told me the same thing u just said. So most likely the person I spoke with is living in a fantasy of what he thinks it will have in it.. Just typing what the guy told me.

Yeah, I understand you are just typing the conversation you just had, that's cool.

I have had customers come up to me and ask me EVERYDAY, when is the 3G iPhone coming out? I'm upfront with them and tell them I don't know, we don't have any specific or further information. If we talk a little more, then I'll tell them that I read rumor sites, but still it's just rumors.

My motto, basically if you don't NEED the phone, wait. You won't regret it, you don't need it now. Most people end up waiting to see what happens and we should find out something next week according to every tech site in the world.

LOL, thats true, but its cool when they do that it actually gives a bit of an idea of like what they are looking forward to.. and yea some chick told me they have more power im like LMAO.. but w.e. ya never know.. But u seem chill and ya know better =D
But anyways I just found a rumor on a rumor sight about a new service in spain. and what I'm aware of from friends that live there is that they run on 3g not edge.. and anyways on their sight it has like iPhone related things and they are a new service.. as acording to the sight it says "Apple wants to send the iPhone inside every part of the world." Then according to that ide say that the price range is probably prity cheap... thats form my view. I actually think is $100 more then what the ipod touch is.. its always bin like that even now on the edge version of it. I truly think the iPhone 2nd gen 32 gb iPhone will be like the 500-600... I wouldn't think its more.. + they wanna sell a lot of them rather then keep them in stock.

I'm just as excited as everyone else to the announcements coming up. I already have the credit card ready to buy a new iPhone whatever the price may be. (I'm hoping it isn't $699). I bought the first iPhone on Day 1 and plan on doing the same thing with the next iPhone.

Why in the world do so many people compare the flash memory in the iPhone to the SSD in the MBA?!? It's not the same thing!

For instance, the cheapest 32gb CF on NewEgg costs $129.99. I know its not exactly what the iPhone uses, but its a closer approximation than a SSD drive.

Meanwhile, the cheapest 32gb SSD on NewEgg costs $499.00.

Flash memory are much cheaper than SSD's. There should not be a huge premium for 32gb iPhones. SSD's are generally much faster than standard flash memory, amonst other constant access and reliability specs that are required. The iPhone doesn't require really fast read/write speeds. That is what RAM is for, which I hope above ALL ELSE has been increased in the iPhone 3g. That is the main cause for apps crashing, which is what annoys me the most.

I'm hoping for a decently spec'd $400 model. 16gb and all the other goodies and I'm good to go. I hardly use my 8gb's now, but it would be nice to hold some extra movies, store a bunch of apps and also store videos. No way in hell I'll spend $700 though. I already learned my lesson last summer dropping $600. I can't imagine Steve debuting a more expensive iPhone. There will be boos in the audience and that is not allowed! He may jokingly announce the higher price first and then show the real price, like he did when he joked about OSX Ultimate. Or maybe show a fat version and then the real one. I could easily see something like that happening with all the rumor hysteria. I bet several of the negative rumors are fabrications by Apple so that people will be even more excited by what is really shown. Until next week we won't really know, and its pretty much driving me crazy waiting for the news to drop.

(Responses in bold)

- Lighter weight
Doubt it, GPS module demands space
- Black + other colors
Good for business, bad for Apple design. I really like the way the current iPhone is colored and designed. They'll keep aluminum back though, its their "new" thing.
- Focus on Multimedia with Video recording
Definitely video recording with a featured upload link to youtube. iPhone 1 lacks video recording = blows big time.
- Video Conferencing
3G = video conferencing. The "european way".
- GPS
Hopefully, not definate though. Nice addition to Google Maps and a GREAT feature. Good for business.
- 16GB $499
Probably correct pricing.
- 32GB $699
Probably correct pricing. A bit expensive I guess but 32GB chips aint cheap. Apple could lower price ($599) and sell more iphones though.

The gap of 16 GB storage in the iPod touch shows a $100 difference.

16GB iPod touch = $399
32GB iPod touch = $499

8GB iPhone = $399
16GB iPhone = $499
32GB iPhone = $599

Apple holds a $100 difference between a 16GB iPod touch and a 16GB iPhone, $100 for the phone. 32GB iPod touch $499 32GB iPhone $599.

I would be very happy with any of those prices, as here in the UK we always seem to have to pay a premuim!
8GB iPod Touch = £199 = $390
16GB iPod Touch = £269 = $527
32GB iPod Touch = £329 = $645

8GB iPhone = £269 = $527
16GB iPhone = £329 = $645

We seem to have a £60 or £70 difference when doubling the size, so the 32GB iPhone could potentially cost
32GB iPhone = £399 = $782

Sucks to be us lol!

yay. im aiming for a 32GB XD woohoo!
now all im waiting for is my stupid pin number to come in. .

10million phones need to be sold this year people....

Ain't know way the price is going up, I say again: The price will be the same if not less or I will eat my socks and post it on youtube. I think they will squeeze in a 299 model somehow.
