Europeans like small phones?

making it bigger!? They should release:

1. iPhone 2: slim as iPod touch with 3.5" widescreen.
2. iPhone Nano: slim as iPod Nano, with 2.5" widescreen.

They should not make bigger phones! This will never be successful outside of the US. Europe and Asia demands smaller phones in general.

When it comes to technology it's works like a natural law - against form factor. Thus - the more tech stuff inside - the bigger device. But - the camera should be improved - faster & better quality. 3G is a necessity for Europe and Asia. GPS an necessity? Don't think so - it's a techie thing still.

I don't think so! Europeans (I come from Austria) love big phones. All my friends are crazy about the fat Nokias. But I don't like them. I like thin things. ;)

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

Real GPS that is awesome! I officially think it may be worth the upgrade. I'm really looking forward to it.

I want GPS but it would be in my car, why would I need one on the phone? It would just make my phone bigger and heavier. Drains battery faster too.

i haven't read the whole thread,

but regarding the black back -

If the 3G iPhone doesn't have much of what Engadget described, i'm going to lose respect for them.

You realise that rollover minutes are a scam right? There are two kinds of customers:

Customers who never go over their allocated minutes, and never use their rollover minutes.

Customers who go over their plans and don't get rollover minutes.

You don't have "unlimited minnutes because of rollover", you realise that there are people out there to who 900 minutes is not enough for a month right, to which $99 for unlimited is a huge bargain?

I'm speaking here as an iPhone/AT&T customer. Your post smacks of an odd "AT&T fanboyism".

Well I'm glad you decided to put everyone into 2 categories - I actually fit into a 3rd category. Most months I don't use all my mins but about once every 3-4 months I go over my monthly allotment but because I didn't use them all the last 3 months it's no big deal. I've had both Sprint and Verizon and while it was nice that Verizon lets you change plans the day before your billing cycle I was very annoyed with fact that I only needed the increased mins for 1 month. I have yet to go over my monthly + roll over but I have certainly used my rollover and I've got the cheapest plan available so it's really the best deal I could get. Well, aside from Sprint's unlimited everything for $100 - that's a pretty sweet deal IMO.

Don't walk much huh? I've heard countless stories from my sisters (work in DC) about how they'll be walking around and people won't be sure exactly where they are, they pull out their GPS crack-berries and voila - there you are. But yes, the main reason I would want it would be driving - I'd also like some company to make a iPhone holder that would attach to a vent in the car and could portrait or landscape.

And, as some others have mentioned, it really needs an on-off switch because when I'm sitting at work I don't need that thing sucking battery life.

I would love GPS...but I know apple wouldn't make a thicker iPhone even if they do include GPS.

Exactly. GPS, if included, will most definitely include an on-off, much as WiFi does now. No reason for it not to.

Just HAVING it would be tremendously handy, especially with the greatness that is the iPhone's rendition of Google Maps.

I think the form factor of the 3G iPhone will be the same. The iPhone has a very high brand recognition, changing the case would be a bad marketing decision. They can change the design of iPods, as long as it's a display with a round thingie below it, people will identify it as "iPod". Technically illeterate people know the iPhone as a touch screen thingie with a shiny frame and aluminum back. Apple made sure people recognize an iPhone when they see one in the wild.

GPS would work only where it makes sense; that is when the maps application is open and other applications where your location is helpful (twitter, e-Mail signature "sent from my iPhone in Amsterdam", EXIF data for the camera pictures). It would probalby use less power than WIFI triangulation, so I wouldn't worry about that. As for antennas, the 3G iPhone could have the black part on the back take up some more space. This is a minor design change but you can still tell at once if it's 3G or not by just looking at the case.

You can tell not much. I live in not so large a city where in I still don't depend on public transport to go to work or move around. Parking space is a bliss. A GPS on /off switch would definitely help.

I do have a portable GPS that is small enough that I could put it on my pocket when walking around but the Google map is often sufficient enough to tell me my whereabouts. Needing a GPS just to walk around is an overkill I think. Hiking maybe...

Yeah, but then you said this:

If you're seriously spending $1188 a year to talk more than me, and it's not paid by your company, I feel sorry for you.

That statement demonstrates that you are not taking other people's situations into consideration.

Actually, that doesn't prove your point. I'd feel sorry for any individual phone customer that feels the need to be on the phone that much and thus has to pay that much a year. Unless they're a business customer, and then the business should be paying for it.

It has nothing to do with a situation. Buying that plan means that 22.5 hours of talk time isn't enough for you. That means that without mobile to mobile, unlimited nights and weekends, and rollover minutes, almost an entire day worth of talk time isn't enough. In my situation, and most others working full time, that would mean that I would come home 1/3 of the month and just talk until nights and weekends kicks in. I find that sad. I understand other people's situations, but I don't see how people would use that amount of time on the phone. If it's not business related, you're just talking to friends and family. I'd rather hang out with my friends than call them on the phone. I know that's not possible for some people, or that some people are out of state or country. Depending on timezones you might as well call during the evening anyway. Hell, it'd make the most sense if you truly needed those minutes to just pay $8.99/mo to get early nights at 7pm.

Sorry, I try to consider other people when I post, but I can't fathom anyone, that isn't a business customer, needing those kind of minutes. My original statement was really trying to elicit a response from the OP about what his/her situation was. I understood that they weren't me, and I wanted to know what possible reason they would ever need that amount of minutes is. Until I hear something reasonable, I'll find it sad to waste that kind of time and money on a phone. You're welcome to change my mind.

Again, not everyone works a 9 to 5 job like you, or for a company (that would cover the phone bill, as you insist) at all? Ever heard of an entrepreneur?

Also, a lot of people are going all wireless--- so at the $100/mo for unlimited they can feel more comfortable dropping the landline. Who are you to judge or determine someone's needs? If they want/need to pay $100 bucks/mo for phone service, that is their business and not yours. Some people might consider the extra money well spent as peace of mind, so they NEVER have to worry about overages. Before these unlimited plans started popping up some people were paying $200/mo for a few thousand minutes per month.

As I said, a business. An entrepreneur without a LLC or S-Corp. these days is ridiculous. They are both the business and the individual. Their company should pay for the phone. They'd get better tax benefits by doing so.

I wouldn't work for a company that expected me to be on call and then wouldn't pay for my phone. I understand that it happens. I just wouldn't do it. I also know that not everyone works 9-5—I actually don't exactly either. But many people do, and so who would you have to call?

Again, I'm not judging someone's needs. Phone use is not a basic need. I don't know if you remember this or not, but there was a time like 20 years ago where pretty much no one had a cell phone.

I never said that it's my business what people pay for their phone—I don't go around asking people. I am still allowed to feel sorry for someone who would waste that kind of time and money on the phone—realize I'm also thinking about the time spent when it's a free call. Yeah, it's nice for the business customers that were spending so much before—that's the only group that I ever heard complaining about it.

And the land line thing is a good reason that someone would need unlimited minutes. I can see that. However, don't condescend to me like I didn't know that existed. I'm one of those people, thank you. I haven't had a land line for a few years.

The one thing that is really bothering me about all this speculation is the fact that it will have a "slightly larger" design. No thank you. Although I currently don't have an iPhone I plan on getting the 3G pretty much whatever it looks like, but please don't make it any thicker.

I am an iPod touch user, and I do love the thing, and I think most touch users will agree with me here. After using my touch for a while now, when I hold the iPhone the thing feels HUGE. I know, the touch doesn't have half the crap inside of the iPhone, but I just can't see Apple making a product bigger, although it does sound with all the new stuff in there it might be.

But if it came down to picking a longer battery life or a thicker phone, honestly I would take the thinner phone. People complain about battery life so much, but I can't even rember the last time my piece of crap LG ran out of battery life. With a charger at my house and in my car I rarely find myself saying, damn, if only the battery life was better. The only time I run out of battery is when it was my fault for forgetting to charge it. I can't stand the feeling of having a brick in my pocket. Anyway, my two cents.

It's all relative my friend. I find my iPhone to be quite light and have never heard anyone refer to it as a brick. I think you need to look at other smart phones before you get your expectations up for an itty-bitty phone. The iPhone is lighter and thinner than pretty much everything else out there and even if it added a fraction of an ounce and, most likely, .05" it would still be a very compact and relatively light phone but again you have to compare it to another smart phone - not a touch.

Hmmm, probably bogus...

I'm sorry when have you EVER heard Apple say "yea, this device has new features and stuff but it will be slightly bigger". Never.

..though even if it is bigger I'd still buy it.

Am I the only person who does not give a **** about 3G??
Who goes around using their iPhone for the internet all the time even when there is no WiFi available?!?!.. That's ****ing ridiculous..

Maybe it's because I am in Canada and we simply don't have an unlimited data plan, but I can't imagine even using mobile internet besides WiFi in anything other than an emergency because it simply costs TOO much (****ing 5 cents per kilobyte!? Yeah ****ing right).

I won't be waiting. I plan on purchasing my iPhone within a few days and I can't wait a number of months @_@..

Also the shiny black is something apple just DOES NOT DO and the only place this has even existed so far in the Apple line is the iMac screen bezel and that's a totally different thing. It is hideous and the shine looks slimey like an ant. I much prefer the current iPhone casing and if it gets even thicker than it is now there's no chance I'd ever touch that black, thick iCrap...

So many people choose iTouch over iPhone because it is much thinner...

I don't think making iPhone thicker would help Apple.

GPS might be useful since I live in a city without a subway system so I never know where the hell I am going.. But for me I don't know if it is really worth waiting for. Plus I only need 8GB so if they discontinue the 8Gb model I donno.. @_@

Despite it's presence on the bluetooth menu, I have yet to meet anyone who has successfully sent a file between two macs with bluetooth. :(

I've done it plenty of times between two macs and have several friends who have done that as well. Have also used bluetooth to get pictures from phones to the mac. I didn't realize people had a problem using bluetooth on the macs.
