Their latest product, the MacBook Air is thin and aluminum and now Apple is doing the opposite and adding thickness with plastic?
There's only so thin you can make certain products. I know we'd all love to have a paper-thin phone, but it's just technically impossible. Until the flash chips and GPS chips get smaller, we're out of luck.

There are many different ways of working with ceramics, you know. It's entirely possible to make an extremely durable ceramic form that doesn't break. Same goes with glass and just about any other material.

is it me, or does that picture of the 3G iPhone look like Spocks Coffin in Star trek 2 the wrath of Khan?

"KHHHHAAAAAANNNNNNN!!!"

That observation seems oddly familiar. I wonder if...

That's a real bad attitude to have. People thought a lot of things were impossible... and were always proved wrong. If anything, we will reach a point where the tech allows for smaller, but it becomes burdensome to use, so a minimum size will be set.

I can see it now, IPhone2 nicknamed Coffin Phone!

That is an interesting observation!

Actually it is a function of the technology available to Apple. In a couple of years it may very well be possible to build an iPhone that is half as thick as the current one and at the same time provide more features. Things like OLED in the near term and some really interesting batter concepts could easily provide us with a thinner more powerful platform.

I ONLY care about the capabilities I will slap a Gelaskin on the back to protect the shiny plastic.

I can't see Apple being stupid enough to put a glossy black plastic back on the iPhone.

The only thing that a glossy black bottom will do is collect scratches like crazy and ending up with a lot of ugly phones being seen on the street (not everyone uses a case).

Just like how the latest revision of the iPods including nano (which previously featured a scratch-resistant back, but no longer does) and touch (which is based of the scratch-resistant iPhone) don't scratch?

Apple doesn't care about that; and if they do, it is to make it more scratch prone (and perhaps, more dent prone) so that 1) users purchase cases from them or 3rd party manufacturers with the made for iPod/iPhone logo which they get a cut of, 2) people get frustrated with the appearance of their scratched device and buy new ones more frequently, 3) people will buy new equipment instead of used scratched equipment, and 4) they can try to cancel AppleCare and standard warranty agreements.

This again is evident by the iPod. They could easily make it more scratch-resistant, but continue to put on a chrome finish that scratches even when you DO put it in a case. It practically scratches if you even look at it.

Oh yeah, that's surely better. Because I really do use my phone hundreds of times a day. Before I switched plans, I had over 3600 rollover minutes. That's over 60 hours of minutes in about 8 months. As it is, I used to get 7.5 hours of talk time. Since I only call my wife and a few close friends, I now get by sharing 9 with my wife. If I even used half of that I'd be wasting my time. I'm too busy to waste 4.5 hours of my month on the phone.

And by the way, AT&T does have unlimited voice calling for $99. And AT&T has always had free roaming and free long distance, at least in the last decade I've been with them. They're not features anymore. They're standards.

Let's think about it logically. I know this may not work for you, but for me it works perfectly. I work from 8:30 - 5:30—usually I stay until 6:00. I get home by 6:15 usually. I call my wife to see where she is on her journey across the bridge home. I pick up around the house and surf the internet for a bit. I'm never up early enough to phone anyone. Nights and weekends are free. I rarely use my phone at work—and I'm excited because my friend's iPhone actually penetrates the faraday cage that's my office. When I get home I'm too busy to call anyone, and even if I did, it'd only be 3 hours until my nights and weekends kicks in. And most of the people I call have AT&—i.e. free mobile to mobile.

I'll stick with my measly 4.5 hours, thanks. I'm also saving $140 a month doing so. Hell, even if it were only me I'm still saving $90. That's $1080-1680. I'll use that to put more principal on my mortgage to save even more in the long run. If you're seriously spending $1188 a year to talk more than me, and it's not paid by your company, I feel sorry for you.

Ever think that your situation might not apply to everyone?
Some people do need unlimited (or a lot of) minutes, as evidenced by all of the big 4 offering unlimited plans.

Given past history of Apple's legal hounds, don't you think that if the photo was a real working phone, that they would send 'cease and pull photo' orders to the web sites that have it online?

As for the plastic-looking cover, there are materials that LOOK like plastic but are not.

"Waiting, hoping, and praying for REAL GPS" :)

Not that I think this photo is of the new iPhone (I think it is real, but just a Colorware phone, but Apple doesn't always issue cease and desist orders, especially because that action confirms the content is legit (although not neccessarily a finished product).

according to that it is a cover for the current iPhone. I do not believe that. Apple would not allow them to use the Apple logo.

You do understand this is Hong Kong we're talking about right? The area of the blackest markets in the world.

There's also a certain point where it's too small to use. My old T616 was the perfect size for a small phone. My Sync is a good size for a flip. The iPhone is a good size for a smartphone. It's twice as thin as most of the others. Really, I'd almost rather it be thicker and less wide. Maybe even shorter if they're going to use that size of screen.

Apprently I do. You must have read it as you quoted it.

Yeah, but then you said this:

That statement demonstrates that you are not taking other people's situations into consideration.

you guys. that black glossy back is a case they use in Hong Kong. I saw a pic of it in a warehouse some where in a thread on here. They say its just a case....

but....lol
Wouldn't apple not allow them to use their logo...come on, everyone knows Steve.

Better Camera and HSDPA

I think 3 mega pixel camera is good enough but only if they are willing to put one with Autofocus. Autofocus makes huge difference especially for mobile phone cameras. I only hope that Apple does not think mobile phone is not for taking pictures or videos for that matter.

I also think Apple should have some sort of Bluetooth syncing ability or even wifi... At least contacts and basic informations. I think this is serious omission and if they don't use bluetooth in such way they might as well remove it and throw in some new tech to enable wireless handsfree function.

As for the design, I think Black Al will be good enough, I did not really like how there is a huge black bar on the bottom of the phone. I think it will be better to give iPhone more unified look by having all black back cover. They can have silver around the rim if they are desperate.

And for the image, I doubt that is a real image.

Actually that's true

That's right. Remember all the negative comments regarding the iPod Nano. When people saw it shrunk and was more square they commented how fat and ugly it was and a lot of people were saying Nnoooooo, can't be true. Then they saw it in the stores played around with it, touched it, etc. and fell in love with it.

Also, Apple needs to make slight redesigns to the outside package, not for GPS antennas etc., but to differentiate it from all the iPhone wannabees making their phones of similar layout and colors. :p

I was thinking the same thing. I actually said that the new nano blows when I saw it in pictures. I actually bought one! :D

However, in the photo this phone is unbelievably bad. I do hope that in real life, should it be the 3g phone, that it looks much better.

I agree with most of what you've said here, but 3 megapixels isn't enough. Get your hands on an N95, use it in poor light, and then see if you're happy with 3.

3 megapixels was lame last year, it would be a HUGE PR disaster if they only enabled it with autofocus.

The press will always want an excuse to kick smugness. No-one feels more insecure than when they feel someone has something they don't or don't understand. Their only defence [in Apple's case] is to accuse them of being smug and elitist.

And don't forget, the press have played absolutely no part in building Apple up to where they are today. Once up there [and up there on their own merits], Apple are ripe for a kicking even if Steve announces the best product in its field - but it lacks one small detail the press think it should have!

So, to maintain momentum, iPhone2 needs 5 megapixels, 3G and BT imho - for both user satisfaction and PR reasons.

I believe the pastic back, they need it for the GPS, 3G and for the 802.11n antenas, none of them like metal.

Thicker would be better to get a bigger batery.

Agreed. I for one don't really care for 3G. To me, MobileSafari is unbearably slow on WIFI with full bars. I'm used to desktop rendering speeds. For widgets and mail the current system is perfectly fine.

GPS would be neat though. You still have to download the maps but the location should be spot on when combining GPS, WIFI and cell phone towers. Here in Munich (Germany), the current system is usually more accurate than GPS for pedestrians (houses cover sattelites when on the sidewalk).

An instant messenger would be nice. There are a few out there for jailbroken phones, but none of them has a message history which is really necessary I think.

maybe they add a solar panel to its backside for an enhanced battery life! :D

i know that sounds weird, but that could be a nice feature for the future^^ also touch sensitive buttons to regulate the volume...

if it's gonna be plastic, i buy the old one...

making it bigger!? They should release:

1. iPhone 2: slim as iPod touch with 3.5" widescreen.
2. iPhone Nano: slim as iPod Nano, with 2.5" widescreen.

They should not make bigger phones! This will never be successful outside of the US. Europe and Asia demands smaller phones in general.

When it comes to technology it's works like a natural law - against form factor. Thus - the more tech stuff inside - the bigger device. But - the camera should be improved - faster & better quality. 3G is a necessity for Europe and Asia. GPS an necessity? Don't think so - it's a techie thing still.

$99? That's a ripoff if I can get virtually unlimited minutes because of rollover for only $59.99. Also, I can get 900 for $79.99 for even more in rollover.
You realise that rollover minutes are a scam right? There are two kinds of customers:

Customers who never go over their allocated minutes, and never use their rollover minutes.

Customers who go over their plans and don't get rollover minutes.

You don't have "unlimited minnutes because of rollover", you realise that there are people out there to who 900 minutes is not enough for a month right, to which $99 for unlimited is a huge bargain?

I'm speaking here as an iPhone/AT&T customer. Your post smacks of an odd "AT&T fanboyism".
