I think there is a great selection of "phones" which are great for calling (Press Dial) and ****** at doing anything else - minimal to no music playing ability (no video either), lame browser run on a tiny screen, almost no apps, terrible operating system, etc etc.

i think this argument of yours of "want a phone first" doesn't hold much water. If you want it to ONLY be a phone, then ONLY make calls on it. The thing is that an iphone is an all-in-one phone which is a phone, an ipod, an internet communicator.... i'll say it again, a phone, an ipod, an internet communicator....

It is not that. An example of a phone pulls of the phone first part is the blackberry. It still boils down to its primary function is to be a phone. The other parts is a 2ndary part of it.

The iPhone I feel gave up to much of it phone function to the other stuff first. For some people that is great. Just it is to far past the balance part for my taste

I went from a 3G to a Palm Pre and I've never been happier. Just get the phone that makes you happy and that's all there is. Who cares what other people have? You do realize with the low cost of the iPhone there's no prestige left in at all?

I bought a 2G for $600 on launch day and while I'm not shallow, at that time for a few months before the price drop, it meant something to have an iPhone. Now the iPhone is becoming the Moto Razr of our time.

What about the Pre do you prefer to the 3G? (I'm asking sincerely since I've never seen or used a Pre...just thought I'd point that out).

And I dunno what kind of money you have, but for some (like me), moving from a standard flip phone up to an iphone + monthly data fee doesn't feel like the iphone comes at a low cost...in fact, it seems like the iphone is priced higher than most other smartphones out there....and it's exactly the same cost as a Pre (with a 2 year contract)...

And while I understand the point you're making about "prestige" and the popularity of the iphone making it the "Razr of our time" but seriously...the 3GS is a pretty amazing phone, even when compared to the 3G.

Finally, by saying "who cares what other people have" and then talking about having some sort of prestige based on what type of phone you have, kinda just doesn't make sense.

Despite what many will write in this thread, almost all will have looked at someone without an iPhone and thought to themselves that they are better than the other person.

It's human nature to be smug. Some are worse than others, but everyone does it. It's the same reason why Apple probably would have sold more iPhones had they changed the casing, people want to show off their new and better phone.

It's a status symbol just like Starbucks, Ferrari or designer clothing.

Maybe think your phone is better but to think you are better just cause of your phone? No, can honestly say I never thought that once.

I do agree if apple changed cases more phones would've sold. For various reason though.

well i know for alot of apple fanboys when they hear their friends say oo i just got a new blackberry (and they seem all excited about it) the average fanboy will look sad and think i'm sorry for you. and then proceed to talk about their iphone.

just how it is.

hmmm
moto razr basically became free and you werent required to get a data plan.

iphone is $200 and data plan is required over the life of the contract worth over $700. i dont think thats quite like a moto razr of our time.

Before I got my first iphone two weeks ago, I was a nothing, a nobody, a bug. I see that so clearly, now that I'm enlightened, and I feel a wave of pity for the person I was—not disdain—and for all those who remain without, lost, bugs.

I COMPLETELY agree on this. I too spent $600 for the 2G iPhone and after its release EVERYWHERE I went people would point and look and say "OMG he has an iPhone". The attention was kind of nice although it kind of got old after every restaurant and mall trip turned into a Q&A session on the iPhone and people surrounding me. Not many people had one at all. I didnt buy it for a status symbol but just because I wanted one. With the release of the 3G subsidizing and now especially the price drop on the 3G to $99 it has become an everyman kind of phone and as available to people as the rest of the cheapie phones.

Not being hateful to anyone or any group of people but when I have been in the Apple store recently to get my MacBook fixed I saw some people in there getting their iPhone looked at at the Genius Bar and it looked like they couldnt afford new clothes, a dentist visit or health care but boy they sure did have their iPhone. Ive seen some of the trashiest people in there with their iPhone so yea, its kind of become a common everyman phone.

In response to the OP, no I never once looked at others who didnt have an iPhone any less than I did myself. As a matter of fact, I have to say I looked at them as smarter than me for not spending $600 on a phone or waiting outside for 9 hours for it
