Probably because someone who thinks it will be a buggy release because its earlier than expected.

Or maybe, they worked so hard so that it wouldn't be a late release, that they are weeks above schedule, and they are ready to release it with the 2nd iPhone.

Or maybe they expected it to be due now, but said late June so that if they didn't release it at WWDC, no one could complain that it would be late.

Think about this, guys.

It's possible that the 3G iPhone (running iPhone OS version 2.0) comes out on Monday, and since the App Store is included in 2.0, it must be ready for the June 9 launch.

However, Apple doesn't have to release the 2.0 upgrade to existing iPhone users until later in June, making the previous statement of "late June release" a reality.

So, it's possible that both versions of the stories are true.
Or, an even simpler possibility is that the 3G iPhone is announced next week, with availability in late June - concurrent with the release of 2.0 firmware.

no way this can be true....

I say no way this is true unless it is only a selected number of hand-picked apps by Steve. Typically with any platform, there is a way for third parties to beta test software. iPhone SDK beta testing is a violation of Apple's NDA. I expect an "App Store Beta Department" or something like that. There is no way that Steve would allow a herd of untested software onto his device of perfection. Won't happen.

The release of the app store implies a new version of iTunes. Wonder what new features (other than the apps store of course) we might see in this new version?

I think iTunes 7.7 will be out around the WWDC time, then iTunes 7.7.1 will be released to fix the bugs in 7.7 ;)

What does everyone think about the June 9th date? Will the new 3G iPhones be available in the Apple store on June 9th? They haven't had any stock of the old since May 9th...what's the point of not making sales on ANY iPhones until end of June?

Also, I may be watching the keynote streaming from inside a store. Has anyone been in a store during a live product release? How does that work?

I'm hoping this isn't true at all. As a developer, it's very annoying to have the release date pulled forward, and have my app not be ready in time for the store to open. The SDK is still in beta, and there have been changes to the API with each beta version, which breaks previously working code. Plus, the majority of people developing apps with the SDK still do not have the ability to even test on an iPhone, just the simulator. A lot of us are still waiting for permission, due to the limited number of people they're letting in for the beta period.

Setting aside my annoyance at possibly losing out on an initial buying frenzy for my app, I really don't want a store filled with barely tested, beta SDK based, apps. The responsible thing to do would be to announce the SDK is final, and everyone can sign up to test on the iPhone on the 9th, and then open up the submission process for putting your app on the app store, which should go live at the end of June. That would give everyone a bunch more apps to download, with hopefully a much higher quality level.

Heh.

I can't recall Apple/Steve giving us everything we thought was coming.
And with the rumors that are flying around I just can't see 3G, GPS, vid chat, App Store, AND a massive .mac overhaul announced in one Stevenote. No way. If so, that would easily make for the most epic 'note to date.

Something's got to give.
What will it be?

That said, I'm 100% supportive of said epic Stevenote.

Why would they release the 2.0 software on 3G iPhones, but not release the 2.0 software for the older iPhones until later in the month?

It will be interesting to see how much the 2.0 upgrade for existing users is. I cannot wait ... interesting times.

Why is it that people feel the need to insult Arn about rumors he posts on HIS RUMORS SITE???? CNET broke the story, not Arn...

Likewise, if he didn't post it, there would be people bitching about how MacRumors isn't posting the most up-to-date rumors.

Arn, I'd like you to meet my two friends: rock and hard place.

I am confident Apple will figure out a way to release neither 2.0 nor the App Store on Monday. No doubt they will release some trinket of an app simply through iTunes, like the games they've been selling for so long, just to show something off. Nothing more.

My prediction:

Steve will play to the developer crowd first, and everyone else second. He'll announce the SDK is final, and everyone can develop freely. He'll discuss the simple way to upload an app, and the process in which it will be accepted for the store. He'll go into the pricing and payment structure, as well as user feedback and dot releases. The launch date will be June 30th. He'll then introduce the new iPhone, with firmware 2.0, both to be released today. And finally, one more thing: the new Macbook Pro.

You know what this means right?!?!? New iPhone update on Monday= Early iPhone release!!! I guess the rumors are right about the new iPhone coming out sometime soon and not at the end of June.... Well lets hope so.. According to the 60 day prediction is actually lands on Monday the first day of WWDC 2008! Then say hello to iPhone 3G some time in June."NOT LATE JUNE, I hope!"
:apple:

Now come on. Who didn't expect this :D

Uncle Steve always has something up his sleeve.

Well it looks like AT&T headquarters was not expecting this (assuming report is correct (immediate availability on Monday)).

AT&T canceled vacations starting 6/15 not 6/9. So either this rumor is inaccurate or AT&T does not know their #$$ from a hole in the ground.

Hmm, seems plausible, but I wonder if the infrastructure is in place to support purchased, downloadable apps without the 2.0 update or if the new apps require the 2.0 OS run properly.

Wait, wait...Apple releasing something early?

Dang.

Then again, I don't go on "by the end of June." I'm going on what the screen said behind Steve Jobs =P. "Late June"

I wonder if there will be a delay between the 2.0 software launch and having it built into the iPhone/iPod Touch.

Well as shocking as it might seem, but Steve won't announce it, click his fingers and BOOM! all unsold touches/iPhones still in a store room, warehouse etc will magically have it uploaded onto them. :p

Will probably be the same turnaround as new macs coming preinstalled with leopard, which if memory serves me correct, was a few months

Oh yeah... I forgot about that memo...something aint right and I bet it's the monday release... :(

Like another developer on here, I'm highly skeptical.

Since you can go right here and look:
http://developer.apple.com/iphone/

I guess it's not breaking NDA to say... the SDK is still in Beta!

This sounds like a reporter at CNET got excited when a developer mentioned they were preparing feverishly for Monday. Well... this could be because they are concerned (like me) that Apple will pull a fast one and move the target date for developers from "end of June" to beginning of June. It could also be that the developer is high profile and may have an app demoed during the keynote. You'd better believe I'd be working without sleep if that was me.

Personally, I'm hoping the last day of June or maybe later. I'd love more time. Seems from rumors and such, I won't be so fortunate.

There is no way the new iPhones are coming out on Monday. Apple will just announce them with a release on June 27th.

I'm sure that the iPhone 2.0 firmware won't RTM until WWDC. Then they're gonna mass produce the iPhone with the new firmware and release it in 3 weeks.

Wait... there was some doubt regarding this?

I thought it was so obvious that it just didn't need to be mentioned.

I think "by the end of June" was the date they said just so they could have 3 weeks without criticism in the event they weren't able to launch the app store at the time they wanted.
That is EXACTLY my thoughts on the "end of June" thing. On the Keynote slide show it said "end of June" BUT Steve Jobs himself said "in June" while the slide was up. I want my 2.0 a few hours after WWDC, and I think I might just get it! Hoorah!

(Lmao, I'm such a fanboy :p)
