I think we will see the programs demoed this past February made available for the public on Monday.
In addition, are there any other developers that had programs ready which were not shown during the 3P SDK announcement? Remember Apple asked developers/companies to create something on short notice.

As others have said. The flood gates will open later this month for other applications.

Will someone out there please develop a PDF reader and eReader for my Touch. Please!

My 2¢ Worth...

1. iPhone 3G announced and released next week (hopefully Monday)
2. It will have Phone OS X 2.0 installed
3. Phone OS X 2.0 (and final SDK) will be released for everyone on Monday
4. Some apps showcased in March and on Monday will come preinstalled in Phone OS X 2.0 or available through iTunes 8.0 if desired
5. iTunes 8.0 will also be released Monday (required for Phone OS X 2.0)
6. Phone OS X 2.0 will have the App Store installed, but not active until late June

This will put new hardware and OS in everyone's hands and still give developers a chance to finalize their applications and get them to Apple in time for another “Big Launch” in 3 weeks when the App Store goes online. Apple gets lots of buzz about the phone and OS, plus keeps everyone in anticipation of what new goodies will be available at the end of the month. People can purchase the new iPhone and know that extra value will be added within a very short time and still get to play with the hardware goodies while waiting.

Everyone wins!

Bring on the 2.0 firmware and the App Store. I can hardly wait for the new features.

Maybe this is one of those rumors that Apple does to throw people off. If so that is very sick of them to make us think it would come off sooner than expected.

However I really can't wait for 2.0 :D... I thought I would never make it till June after the initial announcement earlier this year.

It just doesn't make sense to me, from a marketing perspective, to release the 2.0 firmware for current iPhones and then release the 3G phone later. The AppStore will be part of a new version of iTunes, so the store would be open, all iTunes users would see that it is open, but people that want an iPhone could not buy one.

Others have said this before; from a marketing point of view, any company would want to "sell" new firmware along with new hardware. The idea is to make customers feel that to truly appreciate the new features, you will want the latest and greatest hardware all in one package.

Consider this; Apple releases 2.0 firmware and opens the AppStore on Monday but the 3G iPhone will not be available until 6/27. What would the advertising look like?

iPhone AppStore NOW OPEN! Come buy applications for your iPhone!
AppStore open only for current first generation iPhone owners. First generation iPhones are out of stock and will not be re-stocked. The new 3G iPhone will not be available for a few more weeks.

That doesn't mean it couldn't be announced Mon and released a few weeks later, no? ;) :D

That's exactly what I think will happen. It will be announced on Monday but will not be released until later. I'm feeling like the 20th will be the release day, but that is just my theory. Only time will tell.

Arn, are you post/iPhone happy? A source at a software company said they’re preparing for a Monday release? Yes, we developers are preparing for a Monday release just in case the app store does launch on Monday. A number of us want to be on the store as soon as we possibly can, and Monday is the closest date that looks possible.

Sorry to be pissy about it.

Hell, some of us are ready for manual release we're so excited about this new iPhone!

Let me start by saying that I hope I am wrong. I want a 3G iPhone and I want one now. That being said, it's not coming on 6/9.

First, this guy in the quote above has an incredibly strong point and it seems to have been mostly overlooked. There's no way the 2.0 firmware and appstore will be available as of the keynote on Tuesday. The SDK has to be final and developers need to test and submit their apps. Would Steve really tell everyone, "The 2.0 firmware is available now and the AppStore is open now! Go upgrade right now! Oh, by the way, there is nothing available at the AppStore yet. Give it a few weeks because we still need to give the developers the final SDK, there needs to be some testing, yada, yada, yada, apps should be available by the end of the month."

Second, AT&T has a freeze on vacation starting 6/15. Why would they allow everyone to go on vacation the week of the iPhone launch, then tell them they can't go on vacation starting the week after the launch?

Third, AT&T is hiring temps that start on 6/16. Why would they allow their employees to go on vacation the week of the iPhone launch, then require everyone to work, along with a group of temps, the second week of the release?

Third, if the new iPhone was to be released on Monday, they would have to arrive in the stores on Saturday or Monday morning at the very, very latest. That leaves no time to unbox the phones, receive them into the store's inventory, and have them ready for sale, let alone prep the staff (who's on vacation) of the features of the phone so they can answer customer questions.

Fourth, delivering boxes of new iPhones to the AT&T stores and Apple stores on Saturday or even early Monday morning would result in leaked photos, feature lists, etc. With all the hype for the new phone, it is incredibly unlikely that Apple is willing to ship the phones to the stores and just trust that all of those employees will follow the "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL STEVE SAYS SO DURING THE KEYNOTE on 6/9" stickers on the box.

Again, I hope I'm wrong. There's an AT&T store across the street from me at work. I'll be following the live blog of the keynote and if he announces they are immediately available I'll run over there, buy the phone, then go straight back to work and post here that I was wrong.

Because they will only announce it next week and the phone will be for sale later, most likely June 16th? :) I can confirm that AT&T is staffing some temps as my fiancee works at a staffing agency here in NYC and has told me they are filling temp positions for AT&T.

I hope you're right about the 16th; I wouldn't complain. :) I think it's more likely to be the 20th though. With the vacation freeze starting on the 15th and temps starting on the 16th (if I'm right about that date) then it would make sense that training will take place that week. Not everyone will work everyday, and the stores won't be closed for training, so it makes sense that everyone will get trained at some point that week for a Friday release.

Can your wife confirm the start date for the temps? Is it the 16th?

I don't have a wife yet but I'll ask my fiancee and get back to you. :)

Hey Merlosso,

From my fiancee:
Start between 6/9 and 6/16 and continue through 8/18. We are still
actively screening candidates.

So if some start on 6/6, it's POSSIBLE they will be ready for a 6/9/08 release. Hmmm, very interesting. :)

Very interesting indeed. Thanks for the info.

Oh, and, uh, sorry about referring to your fiance your wife. I just have a really strong feeling about you guys and in my eye's you're already married. ;)

In regards to the training, a friend of mine is a manager at an Apple store and for the last IPHONE they had him come in at five in the morning on the release date for "training."

I have been trying to make up my mind on if I should buy iPhone for the past year.
After reading about the 3G that will hopefully come out soon (Monday) I have decided to finally get one. Could anyone out there give me some input on a few things if Jobs talks about it Monday:

-If you think it will be available immediately after WWDC?
-Will it be somewhat possible to get upon release?
-Best place to get one (AT&T, Apple Store, Apple Online)?!!!!
-Price?

Thanks!

yeeeee!!!!

new iPhone and iPod firmwares on Monday?

I just synched my iPhone and iPod Classic and forced a 'Check for Update'
Of course I already have the current firmware versions for both, but iTunes is saying that it will check again on 6/9/08. Doesn't it usually check again in a week? (which should have been 6/12/08). Could this mean that all iPods are also getting a fw update on monday? iTunes 8 coming out?

I think CoreLocation is the term Apple uses.

Oh, I actually made that up.

lol

I guess I've been following Apple news long enough now to know how they'll name their products :)

...

Mobile Me will not be the name. It's going to be iCore:apple:X
