Yeah I posted the other day about how much better the stand in line option is compared to pre-order. If you get there early enough, you get the product you want at 8am and there's no online hissy fits, bitch fits and people throwing their toys out of their pram.
Getting a guarantee of a shiny new toy in my hands at 8am on release day is what overnight campouts is all about.
For you to walk out with a watch on launch day, there were a few more factors than for just phones.
The number of bands to choose from is one factor. Sure, you could walk out with A watch, but, is it going to be the exact one you want?
If Apple were to have a true launch in the stores, there would have to be hundreds of each model stocked in every store to even come close to pleasing even just a percentage of people. Obviously at this point, an April 24 launch didn't give Apple enough time to produce nearly as many watches as necessary to achieve this type of coverage.
Also, you would probably be waiting in line MUCH longer than usual as every customer that gets into the store to purchase their watch is going to have many choices of size, color, and bands from which to pick. On top of that, they aren't going to just look at each combination, they are going to try each one on, and then probably go back and forth between a couple of their choices before they ever make a decision.
I would say the average time spent per customer coming in for a phone would be 5 minutes or less. For a watch with fittings and decisions? At least twice as long at 10 minutes per customer. Agree?
With the phones, sure, waiting in line was no big deal, because most people had a pretty good idea of exactly what they wanted and didn't have to "try on" a product. The

Watch changes all of that and would make waiting in line a truly excruciating process.
