As with the iPhone 4 leak... people said "Look at those breaks in the steel on the side. That design is un-Apple."

Then Steve explained their existence at the keynote as being a part of the antenna system and blew us away.

I have a feeling the iPhone 6 lines contribute to some functionality that we don't know about yet. Maybe wireless charging...

I don't think its wireless charging, the Nexus has had wireless charging for a long time and it didn't alter the exterior casing visibly. I think its safe to say those are maybe placeholders or something that won't be in the retail product.

But if the rumored long range wireless charging needed external antenna......

Hey, I can keep wishing.

The iPhone 6 dummies we’ve seen have all featured thick plastic lines on the back of the case that seemingly provide the handset’s antennas with room to breathe. According to the Nikkei’s report, however, those lines are from the leaked iPhone 6 schematics and they actually designate areas on the back of the phone that contain glass panels, similar to the ones on the back of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s.

I'm skeptical that this is actually the iPhone 6's real back casing.

While I believe there will be bands for the attenaes, there is no way Apple's design team would have been allowed to get away with making them that... garrish.

they stand out ridiculously. They don't look like part of the flow of the design. This is probably one of GooPhone's mockups or KIRF copies

It is the Goophone

Because Apple's design was perfect before Ive had "free reign"? Please.

Jony Ive was a highly respected designer before he even graduated university, and was a significant driving force behind Apple's evolving design language over the past 20 years or so, even before he was an Apple employee.

Calling him an "'OK' designer" on the basis that you personally don't agree with some of the choices he and his team have made is ignoring the tremendous influence that he has had not just on Apple's product design, but on the design world as a whole.

Make no mistake about it, Ive is an exemplary designer that will go down in the history books for his influence on industrial design, especially in the realm of personal computing. But don't take my word for it, as Ive is highly regarded even among other great designers.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the antenna bands shown in these mockups and leaks, either, but I'm reserving judgment until I see the final design in person.

Oh I know exactly what you're saying, I thought the iPhone 4 for example, was a fantastic piece of industrial design, it all worked and balanced very well in my opinion.

When the 5 was first leaked I said it couldn't be real because the camera lens no longer followed the radius of the case corner as it did in the 4 and it didn't sit centrally in the upper antenna band, being shifted awkwardly low. Very "un-Apple". Most people wouldn't care or even notice but as a product designer myself I always appreciated Apple's attention to detail like that.

I'm restricted largely by budget in my designs, having to use many available parts and get pieces off the shelf or with just minimal tooling allowance - I can't imagine this is the case for Apple so I always expect very high standards from them.

Either these lines are used only in manufacturing and are not part of the design and Apple is pissed that everybody on the interwebs sees these and comes up with negative opinions, OR Jony Ive didn't simply lose the design touch with software, but also with hardware.

I bet $20 on the former, who's in ?

Agreed, I think it would be quite naive to believe that what we are seeing is the final product.
Kinda like seeing a new car that was just wheeled off the transport truck with the shipping plastic still attached to the exterior and assuming that the car will be sold that way.

Those bands

3 Possibilities-

They're part of some new feature or function and will be prominently marketed as such by Apple (wireless charging, some new transmission or sensor functionality)

They're protecting the real material or are a placeholder for the real material that will be integrated with the case

Jony Ive threw his hands up in the air and said "F it, they wanted a bigger phone."

I still don't think the Apple 'cutout' at the back is to enable it to light up.

uSwitch's picture:

iFixit have a pic of the rear innards of an iPad shell:

Pretty much identical and the iPad rear doesn't light up in any way, shape, or form.

Such anxiety and hand wringing over leaked shots. Then when the final product emerges it all goes away. Until then this may help to keep some from committing suicide:

20 Thoughts To Help Relieve Anxiety and Depression (modified to reflect the situation)

1. In order to have good things, there must be band lines.

2. It’ll never be perfect—just like the rest of the ones that need band lines.

3. They put in band lines because they need to be there at that time.

4. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing, so band lines may be needed

5. You can’t control everything and everyone, especially those who desire to install band lines.

6. Money, wealth and band lines are not the same.

7. You’re exactly where you are right now because that’s where you need to be, otherwise you might yourself be a band line.

8. You don’t want or need to know the future, perhaps it actually holds no band lines.

9. No one will remember the little flub you made in the office or at home earlier while obsessing over the band lines.

10. Life doesn’t assault you or throw curve balls at you; you get what you give. You must have given band lines at some point in your life.

11. If you don’t like something it’s because you see yourself in it. Yoou must have band lines somewhere inside.

12. Right now, at this instant, you have everything you need to be happy: Air in your lungs, blood in your veins, lips to smile with and a phone with the ability to make and receive calls even if it has band lines.

13. When things break and need mending, it gives us something to do. If it breaks because of the band lines it will give you something to do.

14. Everyone makes mistakes. Even the invincible apple could be making a mistake with the band lines.

15. Success has no standard definition. Apple will succeed whether or not they have band lines.

16. Life is very simple, band lines are very simple. Co-exist in peace.

17. You don’t need something to be happy. You need someone—and that someone is you. You can be happy with or without band lines.

18. Just like you look up to someone, someone out there looks up to you. Act accordingly. Do not get depressed over band lines.

19. There’s a lesson hidden in everything. There is a lesson hidden in the band lines, but that does not mean you have to break them open to find it.

20. Other people have had your problems before and managed to overcome them. You can too. There are other people that have overcome the "band line anxiety".

Go forth grasshopper and cope with band line depression, these tools may aid you in some small way.

guys, you all are getting worked up over the bands, its a pre-production unit. They're not going to be there for the final product.

Why does everyone keep saying this? Sure it could be the case, but remember the leaked iPhone 4? That was a completely functional pre-production unit that was found ~4 months prior to release and as far as I can tell was 100% identical in looks to the final product. This iPhone is possibly less than 2 months away from release. If the part is legitimate it's likely final. Could Apple have a process during construction that reduces the effect of the band? Perhaps. But I wouldn't assume so.

I don't believe these are genuine.

Take a look at the white bands, they do not form part of the structure of the main shell, they are simply 'stuck on'. The main metal part of the rear shell extends from end to end - so this would provide no radio-transparency - which is what the bands are designed for. Take a look at the 5S rear shell, there is a gap in the metal of the back plate at the top, providing the radio window.

Image

My hunch - the cut-out logo will be real, and will provide the radio window the device needs. The bands - a deliberate red-herring, and will not appear on the finished product.

This!

The design of this alleged iPhone 6 back makes no sense at all as the "separating lines" are indeed not separating anything and thus wouldn't help in achieving any sort of radio transparency.

Edit: To drive this point home, look at the rear shell of the HTC One: here the horizontal lines clearly do separate the different pieces of the rear shell.

It's funny how we keep getting these leaks and the design is a little different every time.

It makes me think they are all fake, including this one.
