Either way, you still pay for the data no matter what. The same data cost for an unlocked or locked phone.

So if you are not planning on changing carriers, signing a 2 year contract will effectively give you the phone for free.

I agree. It's not like you get a discount off your services if you bring your own phone. You'll be paying the same regardless. A lot people keep the same service for years so why not get a discounted phone.

Only gave up my dumb RAZR last year. I win! :D. Didn't have $100 monthly to throw away at cellular carrier until I was sure I can use a pre-paid plan.

No, it's not the case at all. You don't have to pay data on a plan with a phone you've bought outright. Even if you do pay data, it's cheaper than a subsidized plan. You're insane if you think otherwise.

Fellow 3GS user

Good on you OP!

Still using my white iPhone 3GS 32GB bought on launch day. It still looks pristine too thanks to the Incipio feather that has been on it since day 1. Case is looking a little frayed...

Sadly, almost, I was just thinking it may be time to upgrade. With a battery that consistently dies by 2pm with 25% still showing and knowing some of my favorite apps have updates that will not run on my phone it seems to make more sense.

I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping a phone for several years. Mobile phones are something most of us take everywhere, so there may be a lot of memories connected to that device. It's like a comfortable pair of old shoes, or an old car - maybe not the best, but somehow still worth keeping and using.

The thing I don't get is that why would your phone slow down just because it is old. I mean if you don't upgrade it or install new apps on it, it will be fast as new. I mean u miss out on the new stuff but it still should run fast like it used to.

Your perception of slow has changed over time. Seems now in days if not instant, then it's slow.

You could always get the battery replaced.

Are you saying there is no difference in price for a monthly subscription no matter if you opt for a subsidized phone or not? That sounds like there's no competition whatsoever in the telecom market where you live...

In (most countries in) Europe, the carriers will offer a number of different packages/formulas and then simply add x units of currency to that price if you want a phone as well. So those who buy an unlocked phone will pay more initially, but less in the long run. The second hand value of their phones is also higher.

You got that right.

That is how it is in the States which is why there isn't much incentive to buy outright. The cost works out to be the same, plus you never really keep your phone for the entire contract, always sale and use the profit for the next phone.

In the 4 years that you had your 1 phone here is my list.

Touch Pro 2
Droid OG
Droid X
HTC Rezound
Galaxy Nexus
Note 2
iPhone 5s (I gave it a try but it wasn't for me)
Note 3

As you can see I'm not really a huge fan of Apple. But I can definitely see the iPhone 5s lasting many years because the processor is very fast and no apps take advantage of it yet. Sadly my taste are back with Android. I still come here because I'm a lover of tech.

I've had a HTC Excalibur for almost 8 years!

... and I just replaced it with a iPhone 5s 2 days ago...

You must be in a constant state of orgasm right now.

I myself am gonna be using my iPhone 5 for the next two years.
It was the biggest phone upgrade since I saved money and spent $900 for a 32 GB iPhone 5.
In my opinion, iPhones can last for many years and make the money spent worth it.

I will say the iPhone 3GS is still better than any Android phone on the market today. It just is. But as a savvy consumer who loves owning the best of Apple products, I can't think of anything much worse than being forced to carry around an old 3GS as my primary mobile device. The iPhone 5s is an essential purchase for anyone who wants the best mobile experience possible on any platform.

True, I could. Or I could upgrade to the 4S for free. Instead I just returned from upgrading to the 5s. :D

So long 3GS; like another commenter said, we had some incredible times together and you will always be special to me.

I`m only 15 so money is not really that easy to access

I know the feeling. Even though I am older than 15, I'm a college student with a low income. I'm going to stop splurging on electronics unless I need it. Example: If my phone stops working or if my laptop stops working entirely including my NetBook. I just bought a non-retina iPad mini and I'm positive I'm going to use it until it stops working.

Kudos to you for not upgrading your 3GS. Not a lot of people can do that nowadays.

Haha nice video man. I still have my old 3GS in my drawer. I got the 3GS used but after a year I got the iPhone 4. Then sold it to get the iPhone 4S. And I currently have the iPhone 5.

I buy my iPhone on Craigslist since I don't want to tie myself to a 2 year contract and Deal with all the hassle.

I plan to switch back to a iPhone 3GS from a Note 2 in order to watch my iTunes movies. If you just want a basic media player, the 3GS just works a fine as the latest.

Just until a month ago I was still using 3GS and it's still going strong. I bought it outright and didn't need data plan back then since most places have wifi. I was getting all the updates until iOS7 was released so wasn't missing much (map and siri wasn't really a must). Finally earlier this month I decided to upgrade when best buy was offering a good deal. Now I'm using 3GS mostly as an ipod and for browsing and trying out apps before installing onto the new phone. iOS6 looks really outdated in comparison to iOS7. If 3GS had got ios7 then I would have continued with it.
