Still proud of using my iPhone 3GS. Unfortunately my camera is broken. :(

4 years September for my iPhone 4. That's the month I go to the iPhone 6! :) Nothing is broken on my phone, but my screen has smudges because my only case is the free one I got that Apple gave everyone for free. I took the clear plastic one because it still showed the phone while having a case on it.

I loved my 3GS! I also loved my first car, girlfriend, etc...

If you make enough money, everything in life gets upgraded :D

Seriously though, the 2G is still usable (especially coming from no frame of reference). My 2G is on 3.13 and when I lent it to my mother in law (who doesn't own a computer) it was mind boggling. It's all about perspective. Nothing wrong with the old ones, we've just all upgraded.

And yes, all phones (even dumb ones) are luxuries. I remember *gasp* a time where NOT every 15 year old had a cell phone. Hell, I remember when 99% of people didn't (not old enough for 100%, I was born in the late 70's after all :p).

You COULD live without one. But why?

You COULD live with a 3GS. But not unless you had to...

A relatively current spec smartphone isn't a luxury to some folk, it's an essential item.
I know of people who don't own a car, don't own a computer, earn peanuts and yet purchase a top of the line smartphone every couple of years. It is their one and only gadget, and they really get their use out of it.

Most folk own a computer or tablet, and don't really use their smartphones to anything like their capability. To them a phone is just a phone, and so long as it does the basics then anything more would be a luxury.

As for the 5S being future proof, don't bank on it. So long as you don't update the o/s you'll be fine but there's a reason manufacturers release so many updates, and it isn't just to give us new features. Each update is more bloated than the last and designed obsolescence is a fact of life.
Whenever people slate Android phones for not getting o/s updates, I must be one of the few who see this as a positive!

I make a good living but I have a family to take care. So I will stick to my iPhone 3GS probably until next year when the iPhone 6 comes out. I plan to upgrade my 1st generation iPad to an iPad Air on T-Mobile hopefully soon.

Two of my friends still have their respective 3G/3GS. It does everything they need it to do (text, call, facebook, etc) so they feel there's no reason to upgrade. However, they both say they get about 3hrs of usage so the battery will make them upgrade sooner rather than later. :p

I used mine for three and a half years and was thrilled to move to the 4S for the screen alone. It was getting slow yet was a nice phone for the time I had it.

My boy uses a iPhone 4, still going strong but a little slow. Hes perfectly happy with it. No complaints at all.

4 Years With The iPhone 3GS!

I'm 15 and have had the iPhone 4 and now 5c.... Planning on going for two years or less. That's why I got it unlocked.

You should be able to get a 4/4s for free now.

Or scrape togther 50 bucks for 5c on sale at certain retail chains

That's ON-CONTRACT. And a lot of people, myself included, do NOT want a two year commitment on what is, after all, a non-necessity. Not to mention the monthly price of said contract... wow! I pay all of $35 a month for my unlimted mins/txts/data* plan.

*(data is throttled after 500MB, but still available - I'm under a wifi-umbrella for more than 90% of my day, though, so it doesn't matter)

Even though I own every iPhone since the beginning of time (other than the 5S) I still use my 3GS as my daily driver! It's on 4.1

Here's a photo of it, taken just a few minutes ago:

My old 3GS and both mine and my wife's old iPhone 4's now sit on charging docks in strategic places around the house and act as extra security cameras for me. Just a simple app turns them into 24/7 surveillance for me.

Older devices don't necessarily need to be traded in or go into a desk drawer to collect dust. I prefer to put them to good use and continue to get my moneys worth.
