While I totally understand people who don't like it and prefer the Nexus, I don't get those who bash it, insult those who like it in the process, and finish by saying they'll buy the next one. If the Nexus is so much better, and if people buying iPads are so stupid, then why don't you buy the Nexus ?
Now, people need to understand that their own preferences are not necessarily universal, they're not the one and only truth, and other people are not the bane of humanity just because they like something else.
I'll tell you why I bought the mini : because it addresses a market (me lol) where no other tablet is. It's all fine and dandy to mention the two same things over and over, but there are other criteria than price and PPI.
So why did I choose it ?
- It has an 8" display, where others have either 7 or 9 or 10.
- It has a 4/3 ratio, where smaller ones have 16/10 or -gasp- 17/10. And THAT, plus that supplemental inch, makes all the difference in the world.
- While it has a bigger screen, it's no bigger than 7-inchers, or almost.
- But it's way lighter.
- It has smaller bezels.
- I like metal better than plastic.
- While I like Android a lot on phones, I really didn't like it on my previous tablet.
- The competitors are made to be cheap. They are. It shows.
- There's something to say for Apple's customer service and returns policy.
Would I like it better if it had a higher resolution display ? Yes. Is it a dealbreaker once I factor all the rest in ? Absolutely not. I also know that your eyes get used to whatever you're looking at.
Now, I'm mostly comparing to the Nexus. To me, the Fire is not a tablet, it's a cheap shopwindow to Amazon, its design is horrendous, and its OS is... well, it is. But that's my personal opinion. I'm not going to pass value judgments to those who like it.
If Google were to create a high-quality tablet (hardware-wise) with a bigger screen, I might look at it. And I'd obviously pay more for it than I would for the Nexus 7. That's just not the case now.
